The Role of College Exam Prep Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2X9F6oK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe idea of universities for everyone doesn\u2019t exist\u2026 Universities should be reserved for the intellectual elite.\u201d These are <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30kNj6v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the words<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30k64qE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brazil&#8217;s recently dismissed Minister of Education Ricardo V\u00e9lez-Rodriguez<\/a>, spoken in January of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diametrically countering this notion,<em> pr\u00e9-vestibular<\/em> college entrance exam preparatory courses\u2014offered for free or for a symbolic amount\u2014are democratic educational spaces that strive to help low-income youth get into college. As top public and private Brazilian universities <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Il4HTA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increased admissions slots<\/a> in the past two decades with a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2UV2Z1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new emphasis on democratizing and expanding access to higher education in the country<\/a>, favela community-based <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2UBLsMf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">test preparation courses<\/a> began to expand to serve students attending public schools in these communities and peripheral neighborhoods across the Rio de Janeiro metro region.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2003, we have seen public policies promoting educational inclusion such as the federal <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WrdhqM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University for All<\/a> (ProUni) scholarship program, <a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/2zXCITD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">affirmative action laws<\/a>, the federal <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JJxfH4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Financial Aid Fund<\/a> (FIES), and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2De5z8F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scholarships that cover living expenses<\/a>. This movement aimed to facilitate access and increase the number of low- and middle-income students in higher education. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XKQl3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to Brazil&#8217;s National Union of Students<\/a> (UNE), there were 1.7 million people enrolled in higher education in 1994. In 2014, this number increased to 7 million, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XKQl3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2.3 million<\/a> (33%) of whom were students considered low- and middle-income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In accordance with this growth, an example of community <em>pr\u00e9-vestibular<\/em> course is the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30nLLc2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Invest Pr\u00e9-Vestibular Course<\/a>, founded in 1998 in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30kOAKP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Botafogo<\/a>, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/318kJ9H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Zone<\/a>, by alumni of the private Santo Ign\u00e1cio High School. These alumni noticed a need among nearby favela youth for extra support to prepare for Brazil&#8217;s college entrance exam, the <em>v<\/em><em>estibular,<\/em> and eventually, its replacement\u2014the National High School Examination (ENEM). Over the years, nearly 250 graduates of the course have been admitted to universities, according to project manager Get\u00falio Fidelis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This program is one of many free <em>pr\u00e9-vestibular<\/em> programs in Rio de Janeiro that offer high-quality instruction. Beyond just the curriculum, the encouragement and support from teachers and volunteers can make a world of difference at this stage of students\u2019 education, which can take up to a year or more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-54471 size-content\" title=\"Students from the pr\u00e9-vestibular course offered by Mar\u00e9 Center for Solidarity Studies and Action (CEASM)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-2-620x264.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-2-620x264.png 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-2-940x400.png 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For teacher Elis Costa, the experience has been unforgettable. \u201cI\u2019m eternally grateful and a huge admirer of these students, from whom I never ceased to learn. They say that I&#8217;m the teacher, but the truth is that I was the one learning from start to finish.\u201d Costa taught literature classes at the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JJwbD2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Redes da Mar\u00e9 Pr\u00e9-Vestibular<\/a> course in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgZ9Y4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> favelas, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30j9YjF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Zone<\/a>. According to records, the NGO has seen <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2K6LS6Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 1,000 students<\/a> admitted to universities in Rio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The courses facilitate learning, often because they share an important feature: their <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XVXhxz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">non-traditional format<\/a>. With a focus on extracurricular activities, debates, and participatory classes, the courses stimulate interaction among participants. \u201cI consider it a privilege to share an <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XSg6BI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approach to teaching and learning<\/a> in which the student and the teacher arrive at a point where the line between teaching and learning dissolves,\u201d Costa stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelle Lima, who studied at the Redes da Mar\u00e9 Pr\u00e9-Vestibular course for eight months and now has a degree in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public relations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, passed the entrance examination and received a full scholarship through the ProUni program. Years have passed, but her memories remain. \u201cIn addition to the knowledge gained from the curriculum itself, what most surprised me was the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WHv4XY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychological support<\/a> offered there. I heard the stories of people who were able to [<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XkSW47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">achieve their dreams<\/a>] regardless of where they lived, and this really motivated me,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XUoe4I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morro dos Macacos<\/a> favela, also in Rio&#8217;s North Zone, student Priscila Cristina, 18, dedicated herself to politics and sociology classes at the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XSggci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vive Pr\u00e9-Vestibular<\/a> course. \u201cIn the beginning, I thought I was going to learn high school things, but I was wrong. I learned to see the world through new eyes and the teachers always believed in me. They would say that we belong at universities, that it\u2019s our right,\u201d she said. Priscila was accepted into the sociology program at the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZnkKEY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fluminense Federal University<\/a> (UFF) in 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-54472 size-content\" title=\"Danielle Figueiredo teaches a class at the UniFavela Pr\u00e9-Vestibular course in Mar\u00e9. Photo: Press release\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-3-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-3-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Community-Pre\u0301-Vestibular-3-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Figueiredo, 24, spent three years at the Redes da Mar\u00e9 Pr\u00e9-Vestibular and was admitted to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Ms5h59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Service for Commercial Training<\/a> (SENAC), the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XT3dYf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro<\/a> (UFRRJ), and the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XiGIwl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State University of Rio de Janeiro<\/a> (UERJ). She is now a history student at UERJ and works as a volunteer tutor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XVXhxz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UniFavela Pr\u00e9-Vestibular<\/a>, a program created by college students. \u201cThe main reason I\u2019m pursuing a degree is to impact people\u2019s lives. In the end, education should always be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liberatory<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XW7Dxi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upon gaining admission<\/a>, students&#8217; struggle is not over. After less than a month in office, the new Minister of Education Abraham Weintraub announced <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2ExAUDR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funding cuts<\/a> to federal universities. However, in the midst of such uncertainty, free <em>pr\u00e9-vestibular<\/em> courses continue to be an alternative for those who believe in education as an instrument of
