Speaking alongside police in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XCwX7z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baixada Fluminense<\/a> city of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XIp04O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nova Igua\u00e7u<\/a>, the former federal judge called activists \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2z5eAOB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pseudo-defenders of human rights<\/a>,\u201d saying \u201cthey don\u2019t want police to kill people carrying rifles. So it\u2019s on your hands, human rights defenders. The bodies of these youths are not on my hands. They\u2019re on yours.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/30qBuwb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The six<\/a>, Gabriel Pereira Alves, age 18, Lucas Monteiro dos Santos Costa, 21, Tiago Freitas, 21, Dyogo Costa Xavier de Brito, 16, Henrico de Jesus Viegas de Menezes J\u00fanior, 19, and Margareth Teixeira, 17, were each caught by stray bullets or direct fire, the majority during police operations in or around Rio favelas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alves, a student at Herbert de Souza High School, was <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TPCiYZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hit by a stray bullet<\/a> on his way to school from his home in the favela of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Za1dI8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Borel<\/a>, on the outskirts of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TTiP9I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tijuca Forest<\/a> when a <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/33RbTi0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">police operation began<\/a> on August 9. Santos Costa and Freitas, both <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Zu8c2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">members of the army&#8217;s infantry parachute brigade<\/a> were found dead after a firefight broke out at a party on August 10 in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Zone<\/a> neighborhood of Encantado. Brito, <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2ZmVbHN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an aspiring soccer player<\/a>, was found shot in the back after a police operation in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Fur1ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niteroi&#8217;s<\/a> Grota favela on August 12. Menezes Junior, <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2OUR55Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a supermarket clerk<\/a>, was caught by a stray bullet during a shootout between police and drug traffickers in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30uPzsk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mag\u00e9<\/a>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IqnU52\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greater Rio&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XCwX7z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baixada Fluminense<\/a>, also on August 12. Teixeira, hit during an August 13 police operation in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XJeDhe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bangu<\/a>, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVA7k7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Zone<\/a>, died with <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2Zix5xL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her toddler son in her arms<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stunned at the governor&#8217;s allegation that human rights defenders deserved blame for the bloodshed, Rio civil society struck back. Community activists from around the city organized a tweetstorm, using the hashtag <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HirXQg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#ACulpa\u00c9DoWitzel<\/a> (#BlameItOnWitzel) to call attention to State responsibility for deaths resulting from police action. The hashtag soon jumped to the number two trending spot on Brazilian Twitter, reflecting wide-spread outrage at the governor\u2019s words.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">A\u00ed, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wilsonwitzel?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@wilsonwitzel<\/a>. This here is my house, my sons and daughter lying on the ground, while the helicopter passed by shooting, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Zu2kX2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">just like you did in another favela<\/a>. At this moment, at this exact hopeless moment, you are only stoking fear. #BlameItOnWitzel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">N\u00e3o \u00e9 fake. Camila Santos, also of Coletivo Papo Reto, posted a poem written by one of her daughters, writing \u201cThis is not fake. Children really feel this. My daughter wrote this last year. #BlameItOnWitzel.\u201d Santos\u2019 daughter Leticia parodies <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30nYvQ5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MC Bob Rum&#8217;s<\/a> funk anthem \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TQof5n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rap do Silva<\/a>\u201d in her poem \u201cEveryone Should Pay Attention,\u201d writing:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everyone should pay attention to this story,<br \/>\nBecause there are many children<br \/>\nGoing to school to study<br \/>\nTo find a decent life maybe<br \/>\nPlay a little<br \/>\nWho knows change their lives<br \/>\nBefore someone kills it<\/p>\n<p>He is just one more Silva<br \/>\nWhose star does not shine<\/p>\n<p>Whom his family took care of with too much<br \/>\nLove to be crying now<\/p>\n<p>He is just one more Silva whose star<br \/>\nDoes not shine today but one family has lost all its happiness<\/p>\n<p>-Leticia Guimar\u00e3es<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZjOPZM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mar\u00e9 Vive<\/a>, a human rights group from the favelas of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgZ9Y4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a>, located near Rio\u2019s international airport, also posted in protest, sharing a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TPWMAP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cover from the <em>Extra<\/em> newspaper<\/a> questioning the lack of strategy and its effects on the lives of innocent residents. Such was the case of Patrick Melo, a resident of Borel,\u00a0who took to the streets following the death of Gabriel Pereira Alves. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tweeting a photo of Borel protesters marching through the neighborhood of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TRbJCw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tijuca<\/a>, Melo wrote: \u201cThe residents of Borel hill have come back down. Back down for Gabriel, who was executed on his way to school. Back down for the 5 youths that died in 80 hours. For the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Yy8ohy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">881 deaths<\/a> carried out by the state of Rio in 6 months [new figures show <a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/2ZnFNuI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1075 were killed by police<\/a> between January and July].
