{"id":55320,"date":"2019-08-28T11:08:32","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T14:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=55320"},"modified":"2020-10-20T10:41:04","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T13:41:04","slug":"trapicheiros-residents-celebrate-launch-of-sustainable-childrens-park-and-land-regularization-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=55320","title":{"rendered":"Trapicheiros Residents Celebrate Launch of Sustainable Playground and Proposed Regularization Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/31AfCym\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clique Aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZXCnf6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23766 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On August 10, residents of the small and intimate <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2NwNAjy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trapicheiros<\/a> favela in Rio de Janeiro\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2NnrqkR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Zone<\/a> organized a traditional winter festival &#8220;June party&#8221; (though this one was organized in August)\u2014to celebrate community integration and give thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Bv61h5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Project Manivela<\/a>, which supported the community in building its children\u2019s playground over six months of construction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-55360 size-content\" title=\"Residents at the &quot;June&quot; party\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-2-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-2-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-2-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Project Manivela was started by Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XiG2Ha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UFRJ<\/a>) students to catalyze social change in Rio\u2019s suburbs and favelas. In Trapicheiros, residents and students worked together, and identified the construction of a recreational area as a community priority.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-2-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-55362 size-content\" title=\"Residents at the June Party\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-2-1-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-2-1-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-2-1-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe at Manivela had the view that the construction process should be totally collective. We were there to exchange knowledge and experiences. It was a continuous process of building trust, which eventually turned into a friendship,\u201d said Joyce Trindade, co-founder and coordinator of Manivela&#8217;s actions and networks. \u201cAlmost all Manivela volunteers come from peripheral neighborhoods [too], and this was instrumental in building trust and teamwork. It became an invitation to dump trash,\u201d said Ailton Lopes, second secretary of the Residents&#8217; Association.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/pula-pula.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-55329 size-large\" title=\"Children playing with a trampoline. And from that point the city turned against them [Trapicheiros residents],\u201d explained Marcello Deodoro, who attended the party and is a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2E73Iki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Residents&#8217; Commission<\/a> of Indiana, a neighboring favela.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Wall-separating-Trapicheiros-and-Condominium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-55333 size-content\" title=\"Wall built to separate the community from the real estate development\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Wall-separating-Trapicheiros-and-Condominium-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Wall-separating-Trapicheiros-and-Condominium-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Wall-separating-Trapicheiros-and-Condominium-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, Project Manivela ended up involved with Trapicheiros thanks to the Indiana Residents&#8217; Commission. \u201cThey had a meeting with us and saw that we already had everything ready to go,\u201d said Deodoro. Indiana is already supported by a group of architecture students working on community upgrades. \u201cWe are always strengthening the solidarity between our communities. So we referred Project Manivela to Trapicheiros, who needed the support more than we did. The next step is to mount a sign displaying the community name at the entrance,\u201d said Deodoro.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-9-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-55370 size-content\" title=\"Kids playing\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-9-2-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-9-2-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Festa-Junina-Trapicheiros-9-2-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community is very unique in the region. They fight side by side for housing and community improvements and they have had wonderful victories. It&#8217;s a tough fight [against eviction threats and stigma], but a very possible fight. The struggle for the regulation of their land, for regularization. They are very strong in the fight! \u201d proclaimed City Councillor Reimont Otoni, who recently filed <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YW3eLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill 1356\/2019<\/a>, which aims to declare the community an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1EkRliM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Area of Special Social Interest<\/a> (AEIS). The objective, according to the bill, is to provide \u201cquality of life and [extend] residents\u2019 citizenship rights through public policies aimed at upgrading, land regularization and environmental protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trindade echoed Reimont\u2019s comments about the uniqueness of Trapicheiros: \u201cThey are unique! It is an extremely family-orientated community that has the magic of everyone feeling at home. Spending my weekends at Trapicheiros easily became part of my routine because it feels like I am going to visit my family\u2026 It was organic. They bring people together and let us be part of their story.
