With this in mind, on Brazil\u2019s Children\u2019s Day, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ITsVD6\">Casa Dona Am\u00e9lia<\/a> (Dona Am\u00e9lia&#8217;s House) project, in partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2MiHIuu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marginal<\/a> collective, hosted the photography exhibit &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2OQ8Mlq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kite<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>Festival: A Child\u2019s Perspective of City of God<\/a>.&#8221;<b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main objective of the exhibition is to provide a path to rescue the self-esteem of residents of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVA7k7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Zone<\/a> favela using the photographic perspective of children on their own community. All photos for this article were taken by children trained in workshops realized by the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56518 size-large\" title=\"Exhibition launch day. The date was symbolic, not only because it was Children\u2019s Day, but also because the original date was canceled out of respect for 8-year old <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2kWXqPW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c1gatha F\u00e9lix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, killed just days before. October 12 was also an opportunity to celebrate her joy and childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56517 size-content\" title=\"At the workshop that led to the exhibition. The photos, which will soon be exhibited in other venues as well, tell a story <em>about<\/em> the favela <em>to<\/em> the favela, a story that stands in contrast to the one told in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2op4qDU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2002 movie City of God<\/a>, which depicted to the world a view of the favela <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2oHMvcq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only as a scene of urban violence<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56516 size-large\" title=\"Exhibition launch day. Operating out of Siss\u2019s grandparents&#8217; former home, Casa Dona Am\u00e9lia emerged as a multi-use space that seeks to empower favelas\u2019 engagement and development by promoting access to information and knowledge in City of God. The project attracts a diverse public of mostly children and their mothers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56515 size-content\" title=\"At the workshop that led to the exhibition. The subtlety of the meetings enchants me. More and more, we\u2019re understanding and living this inequality. We\u2019re on the front lines to mitigate the effects [of this inequality],\u201d says Siss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56514 size-large\" title=\"Exhibition launch day. In order to keep up the project\u2019s activities, Ingrid is preparing documentation to turn Casa Dona Am\u00e9lia into a cultural center. \u201cCasa Dona Am\u00e9lia already works with culture in different ways, but we still haven&#8217;t really taken that on in full. That doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019ll stop working with mothers, no! Because we understand that culture is the foundation of everything. Education and culture work together. We\u2019ll continue to fly that flag in order to be a place known for its accessibility, its welcoming nature, for education, and the spreading of culture,\u201d Siss dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56513 size-content\" title=\"Exhibition launch day. We undertook a collaborative and creative production process, trying to show what draws attention, what they are able to say about themselves,\u201d says Siss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56512 size-large\" title=\"One of the participants flies a kite on launch day. Edgard worked as an instructor in the workshop that led to the festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56511 size-large\" title=\"Andr\u00e9 Edgard teaches at the workshop that led to the exhibition. That\u2019s why we value every second we\u2019re together with the children,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56510 size-content\" title=\"Experiments with lighting. We went to the square in front of Casa Dona Am\u00e9lia and continued our photography class there. And as we always do in the favelas\u2014when the structures allow the favela to exist without tragic [police] operations\u2014we ended the day sharing another moment of joy with the children, playing a soccer match in the square\u2019s court. And that\u2019s how the afternoon went, full of big smiles, open hearts, and children experiencing something that should never be taken away from them: happiness, the joy of being a child,\u201d says Edgard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56509 size-content\" title=\"Launch day for the exhibition. Photo: workshop students led by Marginal\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites12-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites12-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites12-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to share stories of the favela&#8217;s public squares and day-to-day conversations, Marginal has also begun the project <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/32inaqn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Todo dia uma foto da Cidade de Deus<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Every day a photo of City of God), that aims to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bLoScc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dismantle the violent imaginary<\/a> surrounding the favela, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PfuwnL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">showing other narratives<\/a>, empowering marginalized subjects as protagonists of their own stories, revealing the beauty and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IRv1p1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potential of the favela<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56508 size-large\" title=\"Launch day for the exhibition. Following the tragic episode, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WQxnqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Military Police<\/a> stated that the population would be repaid. Although the episode is sad and alarming, the reality of those who live in City of God is very different from what is shown in mainstream media. Initiatives like Casa Dona Am\u00e9lia and Marginal are a few examples, created by people inside the favelas that value the potential of the territory and its residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/kites14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56507 size-large\" title=\"The team from Marginal with the children that participated in the workshop.
