Participants gathered in the favelas of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgZ9Y4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mar\u00e9<\/a>, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Zone<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro, to pay homage to artistic creations\u2014primarily literary\u2014of the peripheries, with roundtable conversations, games, and exhibits.<\/p>\n<h3>The Impact of Art<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57330 size-content\" title=\"From the exhibit &quot;O Nome que a Gente d\u00e1 \u00e0s Coisas&quot; (the name that we give to things)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest2-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest2-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest2-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upon entering the Galp\u00e3o Bela Mar\u00e9, visitors were transported to another world, thanks to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2tMKsZ9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Escola Livre de Artes<\/a> (Free School of Arts, ELA) and its exhibit\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PLEqAE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O Nome que a Gente D\u00e1 \u00e0s Coisas<\/a> (The Name That We Give to Things<\/em>). Based on an initiative of the Favelas Observatory in partnership with the Galp\u00e3o Bela Mar\u00e9, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/34Gbuy0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autom\u00e1tica Contemporary Art Productions<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KWRoqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parque Lage<\/a> School of Visual Arts, ELA gathered 25 young artists from the favelas and peripheries to participate in an artistic-pedagogical training. The goal was to create a space for expression for voices and thoughts on modern society, and the result was a vast and moving exhibit, filled with photography, paintings, texts, installations, and videos. The exhibit portrays the artists&#8217; experiences and reflections on questions of power, memory, sexuality, gender, and blackness, each carrying the potential to inspire, promote, and renew their territories. The exhibit will remain open to the public until February 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Literature, Poetry, and Games in the Peripheries<\/h3>\n<p>Next, visitors were invited to participate in a roundtable conversation about &#8220;Literature and the Peripheries.&#8221; The conversation was led by Osmar Paulino of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/37PTGDB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imbari\u00ea Arts Festival<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/342t67M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FAIM<\/a>), together with Lizandra Cordova of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2MkPEd3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baixada Liter\u00e1ria<\/a>, and Gabriel dos Santos of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Q7XnMP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slam BXD<\/a>. The three artists spoke of their projects and personal histories with the goal of showing the youth\u2014a group invited from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IBRgNz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cine e Rock Cultural Center<\/a>, located in the neighborhood of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZKEORG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rio das Pedras<\/a>, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVA7k7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Zone<\/a>\u2014the realm of possibilities for those that dedicate themselves to literature in the peripheries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57329 size-content\" title=\"The youth of the Cine e Rock project, along with Lizandra Cordova from Baixada Literaria, Gabriel dos Santos from Slam BXD, and Osmar Paulino of the FAIM arts festival \" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest3-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest3-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest3-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A resident of Rio&#8217;s outer <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XCwX7z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baixada Fluminense<\/a> region, dos Santos spoke of the difficulties he faced in participating in poetry slams, which would always take place in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/318kJ9H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Zone<\/a> or its downtown <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2X5DZ4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centro<\/a> area. In 2018, he finally dedicated himself to organizing competitions in the Baixada itself in order to democratize access to slams. &#8220;Because the poetry slam is the most democratic excuse available for getting people together,&#8221; says dos Santos. &#8220;There is only one rule. Each person has three minutes to present their poetry.&#8221; Based in the Baixada city of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2L0wOZ3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nova Igua\u00e7u<\/a>, the Baixada Liter\u00e1ria initiative carries the same goal. With the support of a network of community libraries, the group works to democratize access to literature in the peripheries. Paulino concluded the conversation asking each Cine e Rock youth about their dreams for the future, explaining the importance of &#8220;each choosing among the multitudes of possibilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In parallel, Jaciana Melquiades of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PQHQlC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Era Uma Vez o Mundo<\/a> (Once Upon a Time the World), a social impact business dedicated to producing toys for black children, formed a circle with Cine e Rock&#8217;s youngest participants, gathering them to discuss the inheritances of enslaved peoples in Brazilian culture. Next, she began an activity called Artisanal Afro-Centric Games, leading the children through a Mozambican game called <em>T<\/em><em>erra e Mar<\/em> (land and sea), filling the space with fun and learning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57328 size-content\" title=\"Children play a Mozambican game called sea and land\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest4-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest4-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest4-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a brief pause, visitors were invited to watch a screening of the film <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Zsw5VL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Carlos de Assump\u00e7\u00e3o: Protesto<\/em><\/a>, from the filmmaker Alberto Pucheu. In the film, which references Carlos de Assump\u00e7\u00e3o&#8217;s famous poem <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/377aaG9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Protesto<\/em><\/a>, written in 1958, the Afro-Brazilian poet speaks of his literary activities, always in service of black resistance. Despite his work and dedication to the resistance throughout his life, de Assump\u00e7\u00e3o, now 92 years old, is nearly unknown in the literary world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57327 size-content\" title=\"A projection of the film &quot;Carlos de Assump\u00e7\u00e3o: Protesto&quot;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest5-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest5-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest5-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, writer Lu Ain-Zaila led a workshop on critical thought in writing. After presenting <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2sTaI3m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her work<\/a> on Afrofuturism\u2014a theory that imagines a future in which the black population is both free and clear-eyed\u2014Ain-Zaila explained that writing is not neutral: issues of power and dominance pervade. Thanks to critical thought, however, which Ain-Zaila defined by referencing the words of educator <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/37j2gJR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Cortella<\/a> as &#8220;the intelligent exercise of suspicion,&#8221; writing can become a tool for social transformation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57326 size-content\" title=\"Writer Lu Ain Zalla gives a workshop on critical thinking in writing \" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest6-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest6-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest6-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Books as Instruments of Potency<\/h3>\n<p>Next, the day&#8217;s visitors gathered with Pedro Gerolimich, Ja\u00edlson Sousa e Silva, Jorge Barbosa, and Rodrigo Santos for the launch of the EDUNIperiferias publisher. Together, the four spoke of the importance of creating a publisher for the peripheries, describing the launch as a highly political act of resistance, one that inserts the existence of the peripheries into literature. Santos recalled books he had read as a child: &#8220;In these books, I don&#8217;t remember seeing a place or a person that looked like me.&#8221; For Santos, the books are essential for &#8220;registering our life experiences, our stories&#8221; and for &#8220;agitating local culture.&#8221; It was for this reason that Santos decided to write <em>Macumba<\/em>, a police fiction that paints a picture of Brazilian peripheries with a strong presence of afro-amerinidian religions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57325 size-content\" title=\"Peripheral literature featured at the festival\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7-768x328.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7-1024x438.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7-940x400.jpg 940w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest7.jpg 1313w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the festival&#8217;s first day closed out with a bang, with a poetry battle from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xt4jv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slam Mar\u00e9 Cheia<\/a> poetry group and music from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PQNG6h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DJ Bieta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57324 size-content\" title=\"Mateus Ara\u00fajo and others of the Mar\u00e9 Cheia Poetry Slam\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8-768x328.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8-1024x438.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8-940x400.jpg 940w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/periferiasfest8.jpg 1313w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>And the Party Goes On<\/h3>\n<p>The second part of the festival took place on December 19 at the Park Library, in Centro. On that night, the organizers invited, among others, authors Alice Pereira and Marcus Diniz from the LGBT scene in order to present their books and discuss the questions of marginalization and desire to be represented in literature in an authentic way, without stereotypes and hypersexualization. Next, there was music, a theater piece by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Mpd4Or\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slam Akew\u00ed<\/a> poetry group, and conversation roundtables in parallel.<\/p>\n<p>To close the festival, the Instituto Maria e Jo\u00e3o Alexio and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/34OhGnE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNIPeriferias<\/a> launched the fourth edition of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/35e8DfS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peripheries Journal<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>a bi-annual publication that gathers the work of international researchers and artists in contemplating peripheral themes, promoting awareness of the potency of the peripheries.
