This article is part of RioOnWatch\u2019s\u00a0#VoicesFromSocialMedia<\/a>\u00a0seri<\/em>es, which compiles perspectives posted on social media by favela residents and activists about eve<\/em>nts and societal themes that arise. This is the second article\u00a0in what will be a spotlighted issue on RioOnWatch for the foreseeable future: the new coronavirus as it impacts Rio de Janeiro’s favelas<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Favela residents from Rio de Janeiro and all around Brazil are communicating spontaneously and at great speeds, organizing themselves through social media under the hashtag #COVID19NasFavelas<\/a> (COVID-19 in the Favelas) to share important information regarding coronavirus and its impact on the favelas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even with the virus having received only a few weeks of attention in Brazil, six themes have emerged in the debates regarding the unique reality of the virus in relation to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro<\/b>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>and Brazil at large:\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

\n“My biggest worry about the coronavirus in Brazil is the favelas. Seriously, people! You all don’t have a realistic notion of how people who live in the favelas could suffer much more with all of this.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

1. Coronavirus is Not a Disease of the Elite<\/h3>\n

Contrary to the initial perception that this virus disproportionately affects the elite (because of its having spread to Brazilians through contact with Europeans), from the moment that the virus began to spread locally, it has become clear that the most vulnerable are those who have the least access to preventative measures and treatments:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
