The series is made possible through a partnership with the Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies at San Diego State University.<\/strong><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RD5IJR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coronavirus<\/a> has arrived in Brazil and already <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/345C98G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there are cases in the country&#8217;s favelas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3aRlf0p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peripheries<\/a>. The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has pushed presidents of several countries to take financial relief measures, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WYaFQM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suspending payments for water and electricity<\/a>, and enforcing confinement to mitigate the spread of the virus. In opposition to these efforts, the president of Brazil claims there is no reason to panic, and that it is necessary to return to normal for the good of the economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying common sense, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/344yrw1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many governors and mayors<\/a> did not listen to the president and instead adhered to the quarantine, leaving only essential services operating in order to prevent large gatherings. This has been the case in the state of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVmAZH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Jardim Edda, a peripheral area in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dQ4B32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">district of Graja\u00fa<\/a> in the South Zone of S\u00e3o Paulo, residents have already spent three weeks living in quarantine.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 35px; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 35px;\">On the Edge of Reservoirs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardim Edda faces the challenging combination of a dense population and insufficient infrastructure. Graja\u00fa is 92km<sup>2<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and has a population of 360,000. In 2016, it <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dQ4B32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ranked seventh on a list of the twenty districts<\/a> with the lowest Human Development Index figures in S\u00e3o Paulo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graja\u00fa grew without infrastructure or public policies, on the edge of the Billings and Guarapiranga reservoirs, which <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/39yKy5H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">receive untreated sewage<\/a> from the surrounding areas. Many of its neighborhoods do not have Basic Health Units (UBS), and thus overload health units in the neighborhoods of Jardim Icarai and Castro Alves. According to her daughter, the vaccine is a way for the government to kill the elderly. In addition to the lack of infrastructure and space, the periphery is experiencing a lack of reliable information: it is important to note that the H1N1 flu vaccine does not protect against coronavirus. However, the vaccine does protect a person from a bout of Covid-19 made worse by the flu. The problem with the lack of reliable information in the periphery is notorious. The owner of one of the stalls said she doesn&#8217;t believe in the disease, because according to her, \u201cthe rumor started after carnival.\u201d However, when asked about what the objective of those behind the rumor would be, she didn&#8217;t know how to respond.
