The series is made possible through a partnership with the Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies at San Diego State University.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JpV3OV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morro da Provid\u00eancia<\/a>, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2zfIdQG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 120 years old<\/a>, is considered to be <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/WhatIsFavela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brazil&#8217;s first favela<\/a>. Located in the downtown <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2X5DZ4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centro<\/a> area of Rio de Janeiro, the area <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dQQPCf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">began to be occupied by former slaves in 1888<\/a>, and by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2svYt8b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ex-combatants from the Canudos War<\/a> in 1897. Soldiers who were sent to Canudos upon returning to Rio de Janeiro did not receive the land they were promised as payment and so settled instead on the nearby hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morro da Provid\u00eancia <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2yLrrsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resembled another hill<\/a> that became the trench of the <em>sertanejo <\/em>combatants in Canudos, who rose up against the Republic: the Morro da Favella. The \u201cfaveleira\u201d plant was dominant on that hill. Whether due to the memory of the original hill or by a possible presence of the &#8216;favela&#8217; plant on the Rio de Janeiro hill, the fact is that the informally occupied region in Rio became known as &#8220;Morro da Favela.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the decades, the word &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CallThemFavelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">favela<\/a>&#8221; became the name used to identify <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2okO0vw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">informal settlements<\/a> across Brazil, and Morro da Favela came to be called Morro da Provid\u00eancia. According to the municipal government&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1U8FIwP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pereira Passos Institute (IPP)<\/a> of urbanism, Provid\u00eancia has a population of about 5,000 people. Its residents contend there are at least twice as many.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this story, in the form of poetry, the coordinators of the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HE9cbG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horta Inteligente<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Intelligent Garden) project in Provid\u00eancia\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2p5QnAn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elis\u00e2ngela Almeida Oliveira<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uaoN8Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lorena Portela<\/a>\u2014describe how the first favela is taking on the Covid-19 pandemic:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the city of Rio de Janeiro, its first favela is still fighting!<br \/>\n<\/span>Here in Morro da Provid\u00eancia, alcohol gel is gold.<br \/>\nWe should wash our hands and clothes after we have been in the street. But <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2UOjN82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wash them with what water<\/a>?<br \/>\nWe should eat well to keep immunity high. But eat what food?<br \/>\nLack of water and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RPJx3m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poor basic sanitation<\/a> has been our reality since long before the pandemic days.<br \/>\nGet out of the street, kid! Shown here, parcels organized by the projects Entre o Ceu e a Favela and Casa Amarela with collaborators\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-parcels-to-be-distributed-in-Provid\u00eancia.-These-are-being-distributed-through-the-projects-Entre-o-Ceu-e-a-Favela-and-Casa-Amarela-620x264.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-parcels-to-be-distributed-in-Provid\u00eancia.-These-are-being-distributed-through-the-projects-Entre-o-Ceu-e-a-Favela-and-Casa-Amarela-620x264.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-parcels-to-be-distributed-in-Provid\u00eancia.-These-are-being-distributed-through-the-projects-Entre-o-Ceu-e-a-Favela-and-Casa-Amarela-940x400.jpeg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no hugs or handshakes.<br \/>\n<\/span>But, more than ever, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2JAmPHY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collectives and leaders have been working together<\/a>:<br \/>\ncars with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2KEJm6G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">loudspeakers blaring for health<\/a>, on social media <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/DonateCovid19Favelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yelling for donations<\/a>!<br \/>\nHold on: these big numbers represent union:<br \/>\nBy the end of April, there were 620 basic food baskets, 103 organic food baskets, 950 meal cards, 2868 liters of bottled water.<br \/>\nFor cleaning, 1,460 hand soaps, 1,008 toilet paper packages, 1,100 bars of soap, 400 bottles of alcohol gel\u2026.<br \/>\nIn addition (and what a beautiful thing!): <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2L4QHNi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">37 sinks have been installed<\/a> along the hill and 1200 liters of soap produced from recycled cooking oil from here in the region! And there&#8217;s a lot more coming&#8230;<br \/>\nBy <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3c5T3qY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bank transfer<\/a> or crowdfunding, even large companies have donated!<br \/>\nAnd to distribute it all? The watercolor illustrations,* made by Portela (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3doBxyB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a>), were drawn from Almeida&#8217;s observations on situations and behaviors in her experience in Provid\u00eancia:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vQdPRWjbRC7mfO8tN1t8V5SOeEw2UWfmpRfNAnvVdsEX9cVK-QmW1S-Dnjebvc3mTg_x-2MyGEVf61b\/embed?start=true&amp;loop=false&amp;delayms=3000\" width=\"620\" height=\"377\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elis\u00e2ngela Almeida created the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HE9cbG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horta Inteligente<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project in 2015. She lives in Morro da Provid\u00eancia and is from Vit\u00f3ria da Conquista (Bahia). Almeida is 23 years old and currently works in the administrative area at the SUIPA animal protection agency. With training in the areas of administration, logistics, and design, her dream is to earn a degree in environmental sciences. In 2015, she was named ambassador and one of the semi-finalists for Prudential&#8217;s Community of Spirit award.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lorena Portela is an environmental engineer and doctoral student in public health (ENSP\/<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dqtMIr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FIOCRUZ<\/a>). Portela is 27 years old and has worked with education and experiments in agroecology, permaculture, and ecological sanitation since 2013. She is also an artist and yoga instructor.
