{"id":59500,"date":"2020-05-13T13:59:27","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T16:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=59500"},"modified":"2020-05-16T10:32:13","modified_gmt":"2020-05-16T13:32:13","slug":"bolsonaro-is-threat-to-the-fight-against-coronavirus-in-brazil-says-medical-journal-the-lancet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=59500","title":{"rendered":"Bolsonaro is &#8216;Threat&#8217; to Fight Against Coronavirus in Brazil, says The Lancet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bbc.in\/2WwkHqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>For the original article in Portuguese on BBC News Brazil click <a href=\"https:\/\/bbc.in\/2SKwNvf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">This is our latest article on the\u00a0<\/i><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\"><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/CoronavirusNasFavelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"slack-kit-tooltip\">new coronavirus as it impacts Rio de Janeiro\u2019s favelas<\/a>.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A harsh <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Aeh1Ck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">editorial<\/a> published on Thursday, May 7, by one of the most important scientific journals in the world, <em>The Lancet<\/em>, highlights the gravity of the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil for its <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Ah3JF7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high transmission rate<\/a>\u2014but, next to the alarming numbers in the country, the text points out that &#8220;perhaps the biggest threat to Brazil&#8217;s Covid-19 response is its president, Jair Bolsonaro.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Aeh1Ck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 in Brazil: &#8216;So what?&#8217;<\/a>&#8221; referring to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WtEqbT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent speech<\/a> by Bolsonaro on the worsening coronavirus situation in Brazil, the editorial states that the statements and attitudes of the Brazilian president and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cuZjJc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">political turmoil<\/a> that led to the recent departure of two government ministers, Luiz Henrique Mandetta [Health] and Sergio Moro [Justice], are &#8220;a deadly distraction in the middle of a public health emergency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The editorial also <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3drlK1L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highlights the vulnerability<\/a>, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Vm1044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for the 13 million people living in favelas<\/a>, those who are unemployed, and the indigenous population of Brazil, to coronavirus. When asked by journalists last week about the rapidly increasing numbers of Covid-19 cases, he responded: &#8216;So what? What do you want me to do?'&#8221; reads the editorial, recalling a comment by the president <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WtEqbT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the end of April.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He [Bolsonaro] not only continues to sow confusion by openly flouting and discouraging the sensible measures of physical distancing and lockdown brought in by state governors and city mayors but has also lost two important and influential ministers in the past three weeks,&#8221; states the editorial, referring to the exit of the government&#8217;s Health and Justice ministers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such disarray at the heart of the administration <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cuZjJc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is a deadly distraction in the middle of a public health emergency<\/a> and is also a stark sign that Brazil\u2019s leadership has lost its moral compass, if it ever had one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Tradesmen-and-fishers-in-Belem-on-the-same-day-that-the-state-of-Par\u00e1-announced-rigid-containment-measures.-Photo-Epa-Raimundo-Pacco.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59504 size-full\" title=\"Traders and fishermen in Bel\u00e9m, on the same day as Par\u00e1 implemented more rigid rules of distancing; Education of Lancet highlights vulnerabilities of the Brazilian population before Covid-19 as a portion of informal workers. The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dFSogd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">indigenous population has been under severe threat<\/a> even before the Covid-19 outbreak because the government has been ignoring or even encouraging illegal mining and logging in the Amazon rainforest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These loggers and miners now risk bringing Covid-19 to remote populations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;He needs to drastically change course&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>The editorial points out that although the main focal points of the disease are the cities of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2SLdt13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a> and Rio de Janeiro, &#8220;there are signs that infections are moving inland into smaller cities with inadequate provisions of intensive care beds and ventilators.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <em>The Lancet<\/em> text exalts the mobilization of civil society representatives, with an open letter led by photographer Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado and published on May 3 calling for the protection of the indigenous; and the actions of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (ABRASCO) against cuts in funding for science and social assistance under the Bolsonaro government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are hopeful actions. Yet, leadership at the highest level of government is crucial in quickly averting the worst outcome of this pandemic, as is evident from other countries,&#8221; closes the editorial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brazil as a country must come together to give a clear answer to the &#8216;So what?&#8217; by its president.
