An 18-year-old was shot dead in a police operation in the early evening of May 20 in the Rio de Janeiro favela of City of God<\/a>, in the city’s West Zone<\/a>. Jo\u00e3o Vitor Gomes da Rocha<\/a> was taken from the scene by police and placed inside an armored truck known as a <\/span>caveir\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><\/a>. An hour later, Rocha was pronounced dead at Louren\u00e7o Jorge Municipal Hospital in the neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca<\/a>. In less than a week, Rio police have absconded and killed two other youth: Jo\u00e3o Pedro Pinto Matos<\/a> and Iago C\u00e9sar dos Reis Gonzaga<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Frente CDD<\/a> community group had just finished distributing 200 food parcels<\/a> in the Pantanal area of City of God when a firefight broke out. Fleeing the shootout, the group sheltered inside a nearby resident’s house<\/span>. The food parcel distribution undertaken by the group is one of countless actions organized by favela residents<\/a> to mitigate the effects of the Covid-19<\/a> pandemic in their communities. No member of Frente CDD was shot.<\/span><\/p>\n

City of God resident, guardianship councilor, and member of Frente CDD Jota Marques<\/a> had scheduled a Facebook Live<\/a> class for 6pm called \u201cN\u00f3s Por N\u00f3s: A\u00e7\u00f5es de Solidariedade em Tempos de Pandemia\u201d (Us for Us: Actions of Solidarity During the Pandemic). Instead, at 5:56pm he would tell followers that he had begun a different live transmission:<\/span> \u201cI\u2019m LIVE ON INSTAGRAM @jotamarquesrj,\u201d he posted to Twitter. Recording himself, he began denouncing police violence around him amid the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n
