It is also part of the debate promoted by RioOnWatch about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2m2UW2H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media narratives and representations<\/a> concerning favelas in Rio de Janeiro. For additional reading, see our collaborative article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/7MistakesCovidReporting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7 Mistakes Made by Journalists Covering Coronavirus in Favelas<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 21,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ZsEul3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catalytic Communities (CatComm)<\/a>, through its bilingual news site <em>RioOnWatch.org<\/em>, held its third interactive Live teach-in event on the topic of \u201cMistakes the Press are Making Covering Coronavirus in Favelas.\u201d Six community journalists from Rio de Janeiro favelas shared their expertise on how both national and international press should improve their coverage of coronavirus in favelas, building on the conclusions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RioOnWatch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s collaborative <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/7MistakesCovidReporting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7 Mistakes Made by Journalists Covering Coronavirus in Favelas<\/a>,&#8221; and addressing recent media trends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roundtable discussion featured: <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3glWkF6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PerifaConnection<\/a><\/em> columnist, assistant at Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LrztMk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Defender&#8217;s Office<\/a>, and founder of the social development group <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Bv61h5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Projeto Manivela<\/a> Salvino Oliveira from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LNGKW2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City of God<\/a>, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVA7k7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Zone<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro; journalist and co-founder of the community newspapers <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dcAaDa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Fala Ro\u00e7a<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WWYW4C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Favela em Pauta<\/em><\/a> Michel Silva, from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/317A4Hx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rocinha<\/a>, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/318kJ9H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Zone<\/a>; journalist and founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xQ8oJQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mulheres de Frente<\/a> women&#8217;s entrepreneurship project Beatriz Carvalho, from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2MmB6up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o de Meriti<\/a> in Rio&#8217;s outer <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XCwX7z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baixada Fluminense<\/a> region; journalist, communications assistant at <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cZ2CZe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F\u00f3rum Grita Baixada<\/a><i>,\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<em>RioOnWatch<\/em> columnist F\u00e1bio Leon, from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XHMoQ0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duque de Caxias<\/a>, also in the Baixada; journalist and reporter for both <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JhMwyE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Voz das Comunidades<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/12VQV9T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><i>FavelaDaRocinha.com<\/i><\/em><\/a> Gracilene Firmino, from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/317A4Hx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rocinha<\/a>; and journalist, communications consultant for international NGO <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2o92JgA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Witness<\/a>, co-founder and editor of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WWYW4C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Favela em Pauta<\/a><\/em>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2zuEkYx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bombozila<\/a> collaborator Daiene Mendes, from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ImAzVp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Zone<\/a>. T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he teach-in audience, i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n addition to foreign correspondents and members of the Brazilian press, also included a mix of favela activists, residents, and concerned citizens from cities across Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-2.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59835 size-content\" title=\"Daiene Mendes of Complexo do Alem\u00e3o\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-2-620x264.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-2-620x264.png 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-2-940x400.png 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Empathy, Inequality, and Criminalization<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Live format provided an opportunity for the speakers and the audience to reflect on the structural and contextual realities and challenges of working in journalism in the favelas, confronting historic <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2M23Hn7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marginalization<\/a> and contemporary <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WOboAg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stigmatization<\/a>. Opening the evening&#8217;s conversation, City of God&#8217;s Salvino Oliveira emphasized the importance of treating favelas and their residents with empathy, saying \u201cbefore any article, before any writing, [journalists] need to have empathy for others and put themselves in their shoes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oliveira explained that the way favelas are viewed must change and that journalists need to understand that they are an integral part of Rio de Janeiro, which is a very unequal city. Complexo do Alem\u00e3o&#8217;s Daiene Mendes added that the press is a product of this <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WPM0ue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inequality<\/a>, but also plays a role in perpetuating divisions. She said that journalists need \u201cto understand the glaring inequality that has been established in Brazil [\u2026] and how it is organized structurally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offering a specific example of the potential repercussions of journalism without empathy, Oliveira brought up the question of physical safety. \u201cThere are very high levels of territorial <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Z4H1ak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">violence<\/a> [in Rio de Janeiro], so some errors can even cost the lives of those that are interviewed,\u201d he said. Oliveira is part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3belWA0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frente CDD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a City of God community coalition that has mobilized to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2JAmPHY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">distribute food and hygiene materials<\/a> to the favela during the pandemic. The group found themselves trapped inside a resident&#8217;s house on May 20 as a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dbvPA8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">police operation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WPO1Xk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resulting shootout<\/a> raged outside\u2014they had just finished distributing 200 food parcels. They soon found out a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ASQsTH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local teenager had died in the operation<\/a>, 18-year-old J\u00f5ao Vitor Gomes da Rocha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oliveira criticized the media&#8217;s attempts to criminalize the teenager as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frente CDD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s acts of solidarity in the community. He concluded that the media had \u201cnormalized death, including criminalizing those that fight against it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Mendes, part of the issue is that the press benefits from such tragedies. &#8220;The basis of the press is inequality [\u2026 and] what sustains the press that we have here [in Brazil] are exactly these issues related to inequality. And the press profits from the suffering in our lives, they make money when a tragedy happens like the one yesterday in City of God,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Community-group-Frente-CDD-prepares-to-distribute-food-parcels.-A-police-operation-would-cut-their-efforts-short.-Photo-Facebook.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59802 size-content\" title=\"Members of the Frente CDD group prepare to distribute food parcels. Photo - Facebook, Frente CDD\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Community-group-Frente-CDD-prepares-to-distribute-food-parcels.-A-police-operation-would-cut-their-efforts-short.-Photo-Facebook-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Community-group-Frente-CDD-prepares-to-distribute-food-parcels.-A-police-operation-would-cut-their-efforts-short.-Photo-Facebook-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Community-group-Frente-CDD-prepares-to-distribute-food-parcels.-A-police-operation-would-cut-their-efforts-short.-Photo-Facebook-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Professionalism<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rocinha&#8217;s Michel Silva, the same <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/39Ea6zn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">urban divisions<\/a> contribute to a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2F7bCNf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lack of professionalism by traditional media outlets<\/a> when working with favela journalists. \u201cThose who do journalism inside favelas are always referred to as \u2018local correspondents,\u2019 \u2018local communicators\u2019 [\u2026] I think that this is wrong because what we do is journalism.\u201d He explained that traditional media outlets &#8220;copying and pasting&#8221; the work of favela journalists is a major issue: \u201cI often see traditional media outlets copying information that they would not have been able to access if I hadn\u2019t published that information [\u2026] and forgetting to quote the original source.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Silva, this amounts to a conscious act of exclusion. \u201cWe can see that the traditional newspapers, big media, between themselves, they quote each other, but when it is a local source, a source that doesn\u2019t have so many financial resources, they end up forgetting them,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o de Meriti&#8217;s Beatriz Carvalho told a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/361lDHQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">story<\/a> of two freelance journalists who photographed a young pregnant woman in City of God with her consent, but had then sold the images to mainstream media outlets without the young woman&#8217;s permission. The media outlets subsequently broadcast the images nationally and the young woman received all manner of online abuse. In response to this story, Carvalho asked a vital question: \u201cHow far does the power of the press go? When this was really [an example of] selling poverty [&#8230;] but there is a person behind the image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of professionalism extends to the way that journalists outside favelas interact with those inside favelas on a personal level. Michel Silva and Gracilene Firmino, also from Rocinha, both spoke about being contacted via WhatsApp with information and contact requests with no suggestion of payment for the work. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These requests often involved favela journalists putting themselves in physical danger. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firmino said that at the start of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RD5IJR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pandemic<\/a>, a journalist asked her to break lockdown to report on events in Rocinha.\u201cIt is unjust. How am I going to produce something like that for those guys?&#8221; asked Firmino. &#8220;And not just produce it, do the research, send photos, send text, send an interview, and then they will say, &#8216;thanks&#8217; and not even quote my name when the article goes out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Silva spoke about a further problematic outcome of unprofessional exchanges with mainstream media outlets: they don&#8217;t pay favela journalists for their work. He explained, &#8220;I think there needs to be a separation between when there is an opportunity to help, when we can genuinely help with something, and the question of being a production assistant, or &#8216;fixer.&#8217; They forget that we are also journalists and you pay [for that].&#8221; The question of financial inequality is central to the issue. Silva concluded that the &#8220;press has to pay for this mania of treating favela journalists as sources. Because also, if we take the annual profit of each newspaper, of each media outlet, their profits are absurd.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mendes showed how the lack of professionalism extends beyond the parameters of professional exchange to the mistreatment of favela journalists in their personal lives. Mendes explained that a producer from <em>SBT Brasil<\/em> had contacted her for an interview on the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/12EvidenceNecropolitics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">availability of beds and respirators in hospitals<\/a>, but when Mendes declined, the producer accessed her Facebook account without permission, misleadingly compiling images of her and a family member for a report in a national newspaper. In response to the experience, Mendes described the dangerous hypocrisy of coercive journalists in big media as the greatest error. \u201cThey believe that this is heroism [\u2026] which they reproduce in their articles when they talk about us, but in reality, they want to be the heroes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59853 size-content\" title=\"The evening's six speakers took on press errors ranging from lack of professionalism to profiting off of inequality.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-4-620x264.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-4-620x264.png 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-4-1030x438.png 1030w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Favela-Journalists-Join-Up-For-Live-\u2018Mistakes-the-Press-Are-Making-Covering-Coronavirus-in-Favelas\u2019-VIDEO-4-940x400.png 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Insufficient Coverage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firmino spoke about what she considers to be the very serious problem of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/361lDHQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lack of research<\/a> in mainstream media articles about favelas. Entire areas of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the issues they hold, go uncovered. Firmino pointed to a \u201clack of information we have about other favelas in Rio de Janeiro. They always concentrate on Rocinha, Complexo do Alem\u00e3o, parts of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgZ9Y4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mar\u00e9<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Xl9f4y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manguinhos<\/a>, and we don\u2019t know what is happening in other favelas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carvalho spoke about the challenge of addressing <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/36ubqE6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">violence against women and children<\/a> in the context of under-reporting during a pandemic and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dbvPA8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now increasing levels of police violence<\/a>. To highlight the importance of the issue of insufficient coverage, Carvalho described how difficult it is for victims of domestic violence to get <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/38STkfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help from the State<\/a>.
