Black People Want to Live!&#8217; Favelas Take Streets to Fight Racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ASLeXZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">This is our latest article on the\u00a0<\/i><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\"><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/CoronavirusNasFavelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"slack-kit-tooltip\">new coronavirus as it impacts Rio de Janeiro\u2019s favelas<\/a>.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Marielle asked, and I ask too: how many more will have to die for this war to end?&#8221; This was the rhyme, in Portuguese, chanted by black, favela, and periphery residents marching through Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, June 7, in the second #VidasNegrasImportam (#BlackLivesMatter) <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2MKLY40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protest against racism<\/a>. The refrain refers to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2G0X83a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">final tweet<\/a> of the late City Councillor Marielle Franco, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/33tjKmd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">murdered March 14, 2018<\/a>. The day&#8217;s protest, organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dM4GnU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Favelas na Luta Movement<\/a>, included participation from periphery and black community collectives.<\/p>\n<p>Under the banner of &#8220;Not from Gunshots, Not from Covid, Not from Hunger! Black People Want to Live!&#8221;, the demonstrators marched in opposition to the State&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WNVzNz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">policy of death<\/a>, both in relation to intensified <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RoXViS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social vulnerability<\/a> amid the country&#8217;s Covid-triggered economic and public health crisis as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dbvPA8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unceasing police violence<\/a> in the favelas during the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RD5IJR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday afternoon, when the first demonstrators began gathering at the statue of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1jfSgXT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zumbi dos Palmares<\/a>, the length of Presidente Vargas Avenue looked deserted. Almost. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are more police here than protestors!\u201d yelled one demonstrator, pointing to throngs of police encircling the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The street has always been ours!&#8221; yelled Juliana Alves, an activist from Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dRHvZy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Popular Union for Socialism<\/a>. &#8220;We are seeing this many police here because there are black people in the streets today. Hundreds of black, poor, favela, and periphery youth filled the downtown <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2X5DZ4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centro<\/a> area&#8217;s main avenue, marching despite news of police repression <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2MCGoAV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">circulating on social media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/3cKbssU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criticism from dissonant voices<\/a> questioning the merits of <a href=\"https:\/\/bbc.in\/3fajj4R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">risking Covid-19 infection for an in-person protest<\/a> in the streets, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3bbs38v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">counter to the recommendations<\/a> of the World Health Organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I am here because <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gIMQEc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">black lives matter<\/a>, and I am a black youth!&#8221; said 23-year-old Adriana Fernandes, a cultural producer and DJ from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/318kJ9H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Zone<\/a> favela of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2MPzUyu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Santo Amaro<\/a>. &#8220;I am part of the risk group, but if we aren&#8217;t in the streets, other people will be. Yes, I&#8217;m afraid of the pandemic, of getting infected, but we are here today in the streets to fight for our rights.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tanks and Pat-downs\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In pick-up trucks and on motorcycles, on horseback and on foot, police wielded batons, riot shields, rubber-bullet rifles, and gas cannons, intimidating protestors throughout the day. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wo camouflaged tanks stood parked outside Duque de Caxias Palace, headquarters of Brazil\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YegJUp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eastern Military Command<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">Colocaram um TANQUE DE GUERRA para proteger um monumento em homenagem a Duque de Caxias, genocida que hoje \u00e9 patrono do ex\u00e9rcito, Mas no Imp\u00e9rio reprimiu diversas revoltas populares.<br \/>\nHoje a gente vive numa rep\u00fablica democr\u00e1tica. Today, we live in a democratic republic. And I ask you: has anything changed for the people of this country?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The police frisked protestors on their way to the march. We are stronger together!!#ServeandProtect<\/p>\n<p>ATTENTION! DO NOT BRING LIQUID ALCOHOL TO THE PROTEST. FOR SECURITY REASONS, ONLY CONTAINERS OF HAND SANITIZER UNDER 50 ML WILL BE ALLOWED.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the police came ready for war, protestors came prepared to keep the peace. Organizers paced through the crowd, reminding marchers to keep two meters of distance between themselves. A <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3f4hne6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">team of black lawyers<\/a> stood at the frontlines to quell violence and tension, mediating the organization&#8217;s relations with police. Throughout the march, organizers reminded the crowd to act as a collective: what affects one, affects all. A group of anti-racist white protesters was called to the front of the protest to form a barrier between demonstrators and the police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The crowd marched to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dTSFNb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nossa Senhora de Candel\u00e1ria Church<\/a>, chanting for their right to life and to their favelas even as police encircled the group, parading alongside. &#8220;I just want to be happy, to walk calmly through the favela where I was born,&#8221; sang demonstrators, citing the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cDNqzS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1980s funk classic and favela anthem by Cidinho and Doca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60129\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60129\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Kati-Tortorelli-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60129 \" title=\"Photo: Katiana Tortorelli\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Kati-Tortorelli-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Kati-Tortorelli-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Kati-Tortorelli-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Kati-Tortorelli-3-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Katiana Tortorelli<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We are risking our lives to say something that is minimal,&#8221; said Seimour Souza, legislative aid and coordinator at Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2MHSoko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Uneafro black youth group<\/a>. &#8220;To have to say that our lives matter is really painful for us.&#8221; Souza lamented that police violence had forced community leaders like himself to pause their food parcel distributions in the favelas in order to take part in the protest. &#8220;Our cry is an urgent one. It is a cry of repudiation to the whole world, to say that black lives matter,&#8221; said Souza.<\/p>\n<p>In front of the Candel\u00e1ria Church, demonstrators lay down and kept a minute of silence\u2014interrupted only by the sound of helicopters whirring overhead\u2014for the victims of Covid-19 and police violence. Calling the act to a close, organizers directed the crowd to disperse, to keep their distance and to avoid provocations.<\/p>\n<p>A group of protestors retraced their steps along Presidente Vargas Avenue, passing tanks and horse-mounted police once more, returning to the march&#8217;s origin at the statue of Zumbi dos Palmares.
