When Covid-19 arrived, presenting its own host of difficulties, the leaders found ways to persevere and grow through the crisis: their organizations have gained visibility and participation while expanding what it means to truly nurture a community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conversation was moderated by Ver\u00f4nica Parente, a member<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Environmental Education Working Group and director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fidaTJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green School Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Projeto Escola Verde) in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WJWldZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cidade Alta<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/32RCeyf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cordovil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0neighborhood<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. L\u00e9u Oliveira, who is dedicated to providing cultural enrichment to youth in Rio das Pedras, expanded his organization\u2019s reach to deliver over 6,000 baskets<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of emergency supplies to residents. Oliveira attributed Cine &amp; Rock\u2019s success to its flexibility, saying that its ten years of service have been based on responding to evolving circumstances rather than long-term planning: \u201cOur movement is alive,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adaptability, however, is only part of the solution to maintaining vibrant community organizations during the pandemic. Gomes stressed the importance of treating community members as individuals with unique needs, explaining that CCIK has \u201ca very diverse membership with many different demands.\u201d Nill Santos, an educator on domestic violence, echoed Gomes\u2019 sentiment and said that in order to serve a community, one must reach all of its members\u2014especially its caregivers. \u201cWho takes care of women? The woman takes care of everything, but lacks someone to take care of her,\u201d she said. As Iara Oliveira of Alfazendo said, \u201cwe believe that stronger networks are what, in turn, give us strength.\u201d Applying this philosophy to her own organization, she explained that \u201cAlfazendo has always supported other institutions.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u00e9u Oliveira spoke about the particular importance of connections with like-minded NGOs during the pandemic. \u201cPeople from the network helped a lot\u2026mobilizing through a network is what we do\u2014it\u2019s natural,\u201d he said. For Nill Santos, \u201cif it were not for the network, a majority of the projects wouldn\u2019t exist anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The speakers discussed a range of guiding principles for their work, such as, in the case of CEM\u2019s Ana Santos, the importance of integrating the community into project design at every step. Gomes said that as a product of CCIK\u2019s increased mobilization during the pandemic, \u201cwe were able to greatly increase our visibility from the inside out, and we expanded our services a bit more.\u201d She said that the state of emergency led CCIK to enter parts of Vila Kennedy that were previously inaccessible to the organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Nascimento shifted Inclusion Project\u2019s focus to delivering basic foodstuffs, she identified the opportunity to educate \u00c9den, her community in S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o de Meriti, about the importance of having a balanced diet. Since the beginning of the pandemic, she had observed that emergency food aid was severely lacking in healthy, fresh food. Recognizing the importance of adequate nutrition in protecting against the coronavirus, Nascimento partnered with local produce farmers to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/39aEcLo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deliver organic food to \u00c9den<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nascimento told the story of a teen named Kauane who worried about her preexisting health conditions\u2014obesity and asthma\u2014as risk factors for contracting the virus. Upon hearing about the organic food that Nascimento and her volunteer team were distributing, Kauane requested a food package. Today, by adding nutritious food to her diet, Kaune has not only lost weight and improved her health but also inspired her mother, Adriana, to do the same. \u201cIt was fear of the virus that transformed her, pushing her to become healthier,\u201d Nascimento explained. Nascimento is hopeful that Kaune\u2019s story reflects a larger shift in attitude in \u00c9den. \u201cWe are going to take this [lesson] with us for when the pandemic is over. Consequently, Iara Oliveira felt that \u201cthere will still be a lot of struggle ahead.\u201d She also reminded the audience that the pandemic has exacerbated Rio\u2019s underlying socioeconomic <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WPM0ue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inequality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: specifically, \u201cmany people will be unemployed after the pandemic,\u201d and \u201cthere are many cases of people living on the streets\u2014thousands of people live in tents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To combat such persistent inequality, Oliveira said, \u201cwe need to have autonomy so we can continue to be resistant.\u201d For Ana Santos, this path to independence requires <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3246r9X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food sovereignty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that is, popular-controlled food production and distribution as an alternative to industrial agro-corporations. Covid-19 has exposed\u2014among many other injustices\u2014rampant food insecurity in Rio. As Santos sees it, food sovereignty and the incorporation of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2VvBCbM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agroecology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are necessary steps toward universal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZRq1aV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAgrarian reform has been needed for a long time: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XLGsoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food sovereignty is a human right<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of how each community leader proceeds in the months to come, Iara Oliveira reiterated the importance of collective action. \u201cWe will have to collectively rethink what we are going to do from now on,\u201d she said.
