This is our latest article on<\/i>\u00a0the new coronavirus as it impacts Rio de Janeiro\u2019s favelas<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

September 2, 2020\u2014As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact Rio’s favelas, frontline community-based groups have maintained their leadership in response efforts in the face of precarious government support and health infrastructure and lack of testing and publication of case data<\/a> by health authorities. Community groups report that donations have slowed since the early months of the pandemic, but the same challenges remain, some have even intensified.<\/p>\n

Community organizations from myriad favelas have set up virtual platforms to receive physical donations of foodstuffs and hygiene products, monetary donations for the purchase of these products, and resources to support information campaigns. The number of campaigns that have arisen, all dedicated to mitigating the impacts of Covid-19 in the favelas, stands as a testament both to the severity of the situation and the efficiency and organization of Rio de Janeiro’s communities. These solutions come from the favelas themselves and thus guarantee direct, dynamic, and effective responses to local needs.<\/p>\n

With the publication of this list, we hope each reader chooses at least one organization to support, be it because of familiarity with the organization or community, sympathy with their mission, or any other criterion.
