This is our latest article on the\u00a0<\/i>new coronavirus as it impacts Rio de Janeiro\u2019s favelas<\/a>\u00a0and is also part of RioOnWatch\u2019s\u00a0#VoicesFromSocialMedia<\/a>\u00a0series, which compiles perspectives posted on social media by favela residents and activists about events and societal themes that arise.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The report that aired at <\/span>6:45pm<\/span> on August 26 on the news show <\/span>RJ2<\/span><\/i>, from <\/span>TV Globo<\/span><\/i><\/a>, and was\u00a0reproduced by news site G1<\/em><\/a><\/span>, with the original title “Bunker of criminals: Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> has 244 fugitives from the justice system” both on the show’s website and social networks, received harsh criticism for classifying <\/span>Complexo da Mar\u00e9,<\/span> which has 140,000 residents, as a “bunker” of criminals. Mar\u00e9 residents, journalists from community-based and commercial outlets, politicians, and artists protested on social media. The hashtag #Mar\u00e9BunkerOfPotential (<\/span>#Mar\u00e9BunkerDePot\u00eancia<\/span><\/i><\/a>) was one of the most used on Twitter the following day, August 27.<\/span><\/p>\n

The report produced and <\/span>researched<\/span> by Erick Rianelli, Felipe Freire, Guilherme Santos and Leslie Leit\u00e3o based on police investigations states: “gangs specialized in various crimes, spreading terror across Rio, in cities in the Metropolitan Region<\/a> and outside the state, but with one thing in common: they have the same base, Mar\u00e9.” According to the report, there are 244 fugitives living in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n
