{"id":63214,"date":"2020-12-20T15:08:22","date_gmt":"2020-12-20T18:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=63214"},"modified":"2024-07-08T12:29:47","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T15:29:47","slug":"sustainable-favelas-3rd-annual-meet-up-part-2-catalog-of-sustainable-favela-products-and-services-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=63214","title":{"rendered":"SFN 3rd Annual Meet-Up, Part 2: Catalog of Sustainable Favela Products and Services Launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/34ho49H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>This is the second article in a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KnL9R5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series covering the events of the 3rd Annual Full-Network Meet-Up<\/a> of the Sustainable Favela Network, which happened online on November 7, 2020.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Tx1mVa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Favela Network<\/a>\u00a0(SFN) is a project of Catalytic Communities (CatComm)* with the aim of building solidarity networks, increasing visibility, and developing joint activities that support the expansion of community-based initiatives that strengthen environmental sustainability and social resilience in favelas across the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region. The project began with the 2012 film\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/FavelaModelo\">Favela as a Sustainable Model<\/a>, followed in 2017 with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bit.ly\/RFSMapa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mapping of sustainability initiatives<\/a>\u00a0in favelas across Rio. In 2018, the program organized local\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2OCoJv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exchanges<\/a>\u00a0between eight of the most well-established community programs, followed by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YOxPrb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1st Annual Full-Network Meet-Up<\/a>, launching the SFN formally on November 10, 2018. In 2019, the program organized another round of exchanges\u2014this time open to all SFN members and to members of the public\u2014in five favelas in Rio de Janeiro. The activities carried out in 2019 culminated in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2D7vv53\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2nd Annual Full-Network Meet-Up<\/a>. In 2020, the SFN\u2019s Working Groups continued to meet\u2014online, due to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WuDWCD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0pandemic\u2014carrying out a range of activities such as rounds of support (rondas afetivas),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3hkUxR4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teach-ins<\/a>, seminars,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3f4u08q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraising campaigns<\/a>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/RFSCartaVereanca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commitment letter<\/a>\u00a0for political candidates, and a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/35Xhfd8\">debate<\/a> with mayoral candidates. To close the year, the Sustainable Favela Network held its 3rd Annual Full-Network Meet-Up, summarized below <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KnL9R5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and in this series<\/a>, with the aim of bringing the network together, promoting the mutual strengthening of relationships among socio-environmental organizers, evaluating the SFN\u2019s 2020 activities, and making plans for 2021.<\/em><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Launch of the Sustainable Favela Network&#8217;s Catalog of Products and Services<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Catalogo2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-63216\" title=\"SFN Products and Services Catalog\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Catalogo2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Catalogo2.png 579w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Catalogo2-184x300.png 184w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The second activity of the Sustainable Favela Network\u2019s 3rd Annual Full-Network Meet-Up was organized by the network&#8217;s Income Generation Working Group. Throughout 2020, the Working Group brought together diverse local producers of sustainable arts and crafts, services, and food and produced the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/RFSSiteCatalogo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Favela Network&#8217;s Catalog of Products and Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, launched along with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2GUYhen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFN website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Full-Network Meet-Up. Some members of the Working Group were also responsible for a teach-in held in August on how <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2QIFBAs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favela artisans reinvented themselves during the pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of them was Clarice Cavalcante, co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/35n67p1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devas-Mar\u00e9&#8217;s Artisans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HSVQHk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nova Holanda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the 16 favelas of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3lottlE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who reflected: \u201cCreating the things we do, the problem is publicizing them, and the catalog will help to continue our work.\u201d Theresa Williamson, who <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/38iBDqq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moderated the event<\/a>, clarified further: &#8220;the purpose of this catalog is not to be a virtual store, it is to be an actual catalog for people who want to know or support the income generation projects of the Sustainable Favela Network.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geiza de Andrade, a resident of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LAoy42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vila Kennedy<\/span><\/a> favela<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XJeDhe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/38frSJP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">West Zone<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and founder of the Marias in Action Project with her own arts and crafts line, elaborated: \u201cIn this era of the pandemic, as the material we use comes from donations\u2014such as newspapers, glasses, a bottle of oil, wine, cardboard, magazine inserts, pizza trays\u2014how do we go meet people to gather these materials [in a safe way]? We started to get scared, we looked for information, but unfortunately the Internet has a lot of fake [news]. We looked for [information about] how long the virus stayed on the surface of material and how to collect that material, I wore gloves to receive it, and I let it sit for a few days before picking it up to work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mar\u00e9 resident Valdirene Milit\u00e3o, an artisan who works with discarded materials and founder of the Carioca Tem Arte line, chose to advertise her accessories made of instant coffee capsules in the Catalog, despite having lots of other work, reusing other types of materials. She explained, \u201cI got to know the coffee capsules at work. There are many people who drink [coffee] and nothing is done with these capsules. I tried several things. I made garlands, plant pots&#8230; until I made an earring, necklace, earring holder&#8230; We have a responsibility for what we discard, [especially] with what is of single use&#8230; understanding that there is no such thing as to &#8216;throw away.&#8217; Everything is always within the planet &#8230; [Our action] is for environmental education, though it is obvious that it is [also] to generate income, and also to train other women within their territories. F\u00e9lix is from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternative and Organized Liberation Movement for Citizenship and Social Support<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xFb2Wp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M.A.L.O.C.A.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which was founded during a meeting of old friends in a store in Pantanal, a neighborhood on the outskirts of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Zrt2vo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duque de Caxias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Greater Rio&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baixada Fluminense region. The group of women had gathered to sew handmade pieces together, and Ana realized that her friends had started to suffer from depression and anxiety.
