It is a hard, cruel understanding that one develops out in the world. The anti-racist action has three axes: memory, present day, and future\u2014which relate to the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/38DzS7p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sankofa<\/a>: San (to return), Ko (to go), Fa (to seek, to get)\u2014to lay out the debate about racism and race, in order to offer a detailed, multidimensional and intersectional view of how structural racism works in Rio de Janeiro, from the personal to the systemic and analytical, with the goal of transforming society.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Mh6jMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adinkra symbol<\/a>\u2014a group of ideographic symbols from the <em>Akan<\/em> people\u2014the Sanfoka is represented by a bird that flies in forward motion while with its head pointed toward its tail, carrying an egg (the future) in its beak. It appears realistically or in a stylized form, in a format that looks like a folded heart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sankofa-_Arte-SESC_SP-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63565\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sankofa-_Arte-SESC_SP-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sankofa-_Arte-SESC_SP-1.jpg 730w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sankofa-_Arte-SESC_SP-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sankofa-_Arte-SESC_SP-1-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sankofa-_Arte-SESC_SP-1-174x98.jpg 174w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The symbol represents a return to acquire knowledge and wisdom from the past, through a search for the cultural heritage of our ancestors, in order to build a better future. With this, it could serve in the Brazilian context to reflect the fundamental force of recuperating ancestrality and confronting historical and current struggles and difficulties, so we can in fact achieve a better society. Molded into iron and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/38QQLvl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fixed in windows, gates, and house doors all over our region<\/a>, the Sankofa symbols remind passers-by\u2014who know how to read them\u2014that it is not taboo to return to the past to recuperate what is forgotten. In fact, this act is fundamental in order to achieve a better future for us all.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to realize that what is not named cannot be recognized in order to be combated.
