This is the second of two articles on the criminalization of funk music and oppression of black favela culture (read the first here<\/a>). T<\/em>his second piece covers statements from MC Poze, the vision of singer Emicida about the criminalization of funk and brings a series of posts, photos, and videos from all the artists mentioned in the articles.<\/em><\/p>\n

Still About the Artist Poze: \u201cI\u2019m Free. The Favela Won\u201d<\/h3>\n

In an interview for TV Record<\/em><\/a>, Poze speaks about his career and how he feels about being accused of involvement<\/a> with the drug trade. \u201cEverything [I’ve done] was [achieved] alone. I had a hard time at the beginning, but I was always alone looking for a show to do here, a show to do there, and thank God I managed to conquer the world with the talent that I have. But everyone can see that I don\u2019t have any involvement whatsoever\u2026 I have my family, and I live in peace nowadays\u2026 I travel all over Brazil, doing shows and it\u2019s clear to see that I have no link with drug trafficking.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about what went through his head when he was indicted, the MC said, \u201cWe have a family and our family suffers when a news story comes out that totally contradicts [reality].\u201d MC Poze, to whom the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant on July 6, 2020, was put on the state’s wanted list and went on to be considered a fugitive of justice<\/a>. Until the warrant was revoked<\/a> on July 14, 2020, that is. According to the G1<\/a> <\/em>news portal, the artist gave thanks on one of his social media accounts for the decision: \u201cEverything worked out. Thank you Father in Heaven. I\u2019m free. The Favela won.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another part of the interview<\/a>, the singer finishes by saying, \u201cWhen I was a favela resident\u2026 [we] were around this kind of thing constantly, so all we did was sing about what we saw with our own eyes.\u201d And he concluded, \u201cMy defense [lawyer] is chasing this\u2026 because I certainly have nothing to do with any of this\u2026 This is going to turn into music!\u201d On October 16, 2020, it did in fact become a song. The name of the funk song is the same as the online campaign #mcn\u00e3o\u00e9bandido<\/a> (#MCsAreNotThugs), asking for the freedom of MC Poze and other imprisoned MCs, such as MC Pel\u00e9 Johnson<\/a>, on the run since 2016 and arrested in September 2020<\/a>, also under the accusation of glorifying the drug trade.<\/p>\n
