It is also part of a <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2kn0GUj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>series<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0created in partnership with the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zcymI6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0at at San Diego State University, to produce articles for the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/SDSUDigitalBrazilProject\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Digital Brazil Project<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0on human rights and socio-environmental justice in the favelas for RioOnWatch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When Luis Cassiano Silva began his research to start what would become <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2SPEfDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teto Verde Favela<\/a> (Green Roof Favela), in 2012, the high temperatures in his house during summer motivated him to seek alternatives to solve a recurring problem in favelas: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1MORVn6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urban heat islands<\/a> (UHI)s. With technical support from Bruno Rezende, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3j9efRj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thesis examined the production of green roofs in Brazil<\/a>, the two created their own model in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/33uOYrJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parque Arar\u00e1<\/a> favela, in Rio de Janeiro\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a>, using heat-resistant plants adapted to the Brazilian climate. At the same time, the absence of vegetation, architectural limitations and other factors make it seem like the only solution to tame Rio\u2019s summer heat is the use of air conditioning. Besides the social and economic benefits of green roofs, the gains for the local climate are many: in Parque Arar\u00e1, Green Roof Favela has reached a record 15-degree-Celsius reduction in room temperature compared to the neighbor\u2019s house, which does not have a green roof. The Green Roof Favela project offers a solution to reduce temperatures in our homes that is sustainable and without electrical consumption. Furthermore, it improves air quality and reduces energy costs both for the residents of individual houses and for their surroundings.<\/p>\n<h3><a
