This is our latest article about\u00a0<\/em>Covid-19 and its impacts on the favelas<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

With over 70 awareness-raising acts focused on the Covid-19<\/a> pandemic, on February 10, favelas and peripheries across the state of Rio de Janeiro once again took the lead in finding solutions and proposing policies for fighting the pandemic. The date\u2014the Statewide Mobilization Day Against Covid-19 in Favelas<\/a>\u2014proposed and organized by the collectives and organizations \u00a0Rocinha Resists<\/a>, City of God Front Against Covid-19<\/a>, Grupo Eco<\/a>, Roots in Movement Institute<\/a> and Redes da Mar\u00e9<\/a> was approved by the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (Alerj) and has therefore become part of the official state calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Submitted on February 8 and approved in an Alerj plenary vote on the February 10, Law 9186\/21<\/a>, authored by state representative M\u00f4nica Francisco<\/a> with the participation of favela civil society movements, requires authorities to reinforce permanent measures with impacted communities on various levels due to the effects of the pandemic, and to expand popular participation in health monitoring in favelas and peripheries.<\/p>\n

Favelas Mobilize the State Legislative Assembly<\/h3>\n

As part of the mobilization day, state representatives and community leaders discussed actions to combat Covid-19 and to promote social and economic welfare in the state\u2019s favela and peripheric territories during a gathering at Alerj<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Community leaders and representatives from \u00a0Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>,\u00a0Duque de Caxias<\/a>, Cavalcanti, Formiga<\/a>,\u00a0Borel<\/a>,\u00a0Salgueiro<\/a>,\u00a0Rocinha<\/a>,\u00a0Mar\u00e9<\/a>, City of God<\/a> and\u00a0Antares<\/a> were in attendance,\u00a0plus state representatives and representative Renata de Souza, president of the Human Rights and Citizenship Committee<\/a>, and representative Waldeck Carneiro, president of Alerj\u2019s Science and Technology Committee who together coauthored the bill that implemented a R$20-million donation<\/a> for the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) to develop the Coronavirus Combat Plan.<\/p>\n

Alerj donated 60,000 masks<\/a> to Rio\u2019s civil society movements on the Statewide Mobilization Day Against Covid-19 in Favelas. The meeting was part of the mobilization to disseminate the Fiocruz tender for which the legislative destined R$20 million for actions related to fighting coronavirus in vulnerable areas.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Rio\u2019s favelas and peripheries have felt the hardest effects of the economic<\/a> and sanitary<\/a> crisis brought on by the coronavirus. However, almost one year after the crisis took hold, numerous of the state\u2019s municipal governments, as well as the state government itself, failed to create actions and public policies aimed at caring for this population, with the exception of the City Administration of Niter\u00f3i<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Favela and periphery activists<\/a>, collectives, communicators and community leaders, along with civil society organizations, were the ones to create and produce solutions to meet the needs of a population abandoned to its fate in the midst of the world\u2019s greatest sanitary crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cD-Day Against Covid in the Favelas\u201d Roundtable is a Victim of Police Violence<\/h3>\n

On the 10th, councillor Tain\u00e1 de Paula<\/a> organized an online roundtable<\/a> about experiencing the favela in the context of the pandemic, with the participation of leaders from City of God, Provid\u00eancia<\/a>,\u00a0Santa Marta<\/a>, Rocinha,\u00a0the Federation of Rio de Janeiro\u2019s Favelas (FAFERJ<\/a>) and Fiocruz, among others.<\/p>\n

During the event, at Morro da Provid\u00eancia, community leader Cosme Felippsen was interrupted to the sound of rifle shots reminiscent of a scene described in Cidinho and Doca\u2019s \u201cEu S\u00f3 Quero \u00e9 Ser Feliz<\/a>\u201d funk tune.<\/p>\n
