Viradouro Fights Against the Abuse of Power [VIDEO]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LwZeaujsFYY\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/LardeMoradoraRespeite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/em><\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23766 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>This <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/LarDeMoradora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English subtitled mini-documentary<\/a> is the latest contribution to our year-long reporting project, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/AntiracistFavelaIntro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rooting Anti-Racism in the Favelas<\/a>: Deconstructing Social Narratives About Racism in Rio de Janeiro,\u201d and also <i>part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3sKtQuO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a series<\/a>\u00a0created in partnership with the\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/33EFNGY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Critical Studies in Language, Education, and Society (NECLES)<\/a>,<i> at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), to produce articles to be used as teaching resources in public schools in the city of Niter\u00f3i.\u00a0<\/i>Follow our <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/AntiracistFavelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rooting Anti-Racism in the Favelas series here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even in the face of the Brazilian Supreme Court (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3g8Bslu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STF<\/a>) approval of the Claim of Non-Compliance with a Fundamental Precept (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3eQenBl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADPF 635<\/a>), which <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2BtISPV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended police operations in favelas<\/a> in the state of Rio de Janeiro during the pandemic, a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3iYaPzK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police occupation took place<\/a> in the Viradouro complex of favelas, in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Fur1ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Niter\u00f3i<\/a>, Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s sister city across the Guanabara Bay, on August 19, 2020. At the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hehHIy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">request of the Municipality of Niter\u00f3i<\/a>, that was carrying out construction work in the locality, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WQxnqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Military Police<\/a> invaded and occupied the territory permanently, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3bGYAos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">installing fixed armored cabins<\/a> in the communities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Viradouro1-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-66936 size-medium\" title=\"Protest by residents of Viradouro, from left to right, Fabiana Silva, C\u00edntia Gon\u00e7alves, Priscila Rezende, Aline Cristine Santos, Eloanah Gentil and Natasch Carvalho. Photo: Rafael Lopes.\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Viradouro1-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Viradouro1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Viradouro1-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Viradouro1-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Viradouro1-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mVGDXK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abuse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/v\/dpYG4cfbe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">truculence<\/a>, assaults, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3iYaPzK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home invasions<\/a>, and arbitrary arrests\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dehkPc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recurring pattern<\/a> of behavior by the Military Police\u2014began to accumulate and the women living in the Complexo decided to act: they made banners printed with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2I4qEYb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#LardeMoradoraRespeite<\/a> (#RespectFemaleResidentHomes) and hung them outside their homes to dissuade further invasions and abuse. In addition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2T7tPAO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black women of Viradouro took back their streets and alleys<\/a> by playing percussion instruments, reciting poetry, and shouting, &#8220;Respect! Respect! The favela is ours! Respect! Respect! These are female resident homes!&#8221; A cultural and artistic counter-occupation, in the best &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WyYfyp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by us for us<\/a>&#8221; style, the movement was initially called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Z6e2Fw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Gente Pela Gente<\/a>&#8221; (Us for Us) and later called the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/33KbP5y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viradouro Cultural Artistic Occupation (OCA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/viradouro2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-66937 size-content\" title=\"The Complexo do Viradouro cultural artistic occupation. Photo: Rafael Lopes\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/viradouro2-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/viradouro2-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/viradouro2-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As violations continued, on June 12, 2021, OCA held an <a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/6M73IZNzCI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event to protest new abuses<\/a> suffered by residents of Morro do Africano, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3lP5JXJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Viradouro<\/a> favelas. Black and hardworking, Nunes was a construction worker at the Complexo do Viradouro, where he also lived. According to his family, the Military Police invaded his home and planted evidence to justify his arrest. His sisters Tain\u00e1 Nunes and Cl\u00e1udia Nunes have been doing all they can to prove Nunes&#8217; innocence, but he remains in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, chanting phrases and demanding respect, residents artistically occupied the streets of their communities with protest music and poetry. They nailed #RespectFemaleResidentHomes signs, now made of hard board, on the walls and gates of female residents&#8217; houses, to make a statement of their determination and hoping these symbols of protest would not be torn down again.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Focaviradouro%2Fposts%2F293365199176175&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"522\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Freedom for Luiz Henrique!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The day before yesterday, while the rain fell hard, we received the complaint of an unjust imprisonment here at the Viradouro community. While most families were afraid for their homes, the police carried out an operation that ended with an innocent man being arrested.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We&#8217;ve been with this young man&#8217;s family since 7am, taking a petition around the outraged community.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The young man works in construction and is hired by the City for a series of works being done inside the community. The entire community claims he is HARDWORKING!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We have the support of @walkirianictheroy and of lawyer @guarino_o_matheus from the @coletivodireitopopular that took immediate action and is offering legal support and guidance to the family.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It is urgent that we discuss the racist logic of police actions that leave the judging in the hands of law enforcers. The &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3z1S6Ln\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What to Do When Police Approach?<\/a>&#8221; primer, an initiative by OCA and Councilor <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Ug5fSf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walk\u00edria Nictheroy<\/a>&#8216;s office, was also launched on June 12.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Focaviradouro%2Fposts%2F298040102042018&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"541\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>ABOUT THE &#8220;WHAT TO DO WHEN POLICE APPROACH&#8221; PRIMER<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The primer, to be launched during the Cultural Action organized by OCA, is an initiative of the office of Councilor Walk\u00edria Nictheroy @walkirianictheroy (PCdoB\/ Niter\u00f3i).
