The goal was to present the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/33HYfiK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guide to Museums and Memories<\/a>, to take a tour of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3rnuKNb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">museums that are part of the Guide<\/a>, and to debate memory in the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LIVE-Favelas-memorias-e-pandemia-um-guia-das-nossas-vivencias-5.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-67495 size-medium\" title=\"Live event &quot;Favelas, memories and pandemic: a guide to our experiences&quot; Louren\u00e7o Cezar da Silva, teacher and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2xO9SHz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mar\u00e9 Museum<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YomcuI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEASM<\/a>; Emerson de Souza, musician, social activist and representative of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2teMkIh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horto Museum<\/a>; and Adilson Almeida, president and director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2NVlbAf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camorim Quilombo Cultural Association<\/a> (ACUQCA).<\/p>\n<p>Moderated by Beatriz Carvalho (from <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3AzYAlU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mulheres de Frente<\/a>), with the participation of Luiza de Andrade (Evictions Museum) and Igor Valamiel (facilitator of the SFN&#8217;s Memory and Culture Working Group), the four presenters spoke to 250 people, between a Zoom and Facebook Live audience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Much has already been lost of the memories and the history of communities, favelas, ghettos, and peripheries,&#8221; It starts with a preface, followed by the presentation of the projects, with a total of 26, listed from oldest to newest. Then we have a map showing the location of each museum. And, finally, we have texts on the themes covered by each.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The intention was to put together a clear guide. &#8220;We wanted it to be easy to read and helpful for users to get in contact,&#8221; Luiza explained. &#8220;This could also be an interesting tool in the classroom, especially in public schools, for students to learn more about these museums, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3anygh3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to know that they exist within their communities<\/a>, that they are not far from their own realities. Through the memory of residents, these museums expand their knowledge, transforming it into a tool for change. They generate sustainable practices, which allow the community to remain in its territory, enable the preservation of their customs and habits, and reaffirm the existence of residents as protagonists of their own histories.&#8221; She then went a step further saying that, &#8220;These [are] <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/FavelaMuseums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spaces of resistance and re-existence<\/a>, they are the legacy of their creators and have also become a heritage of the neighborhood, the city, and the country, to be respected and preserved by the entire population. Remembering that memory is not to be extinguished, it is not to be removed!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Touring the Community Museums\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Virtual tours followed, with the viewing of four projects included in the Guide. First to be showcased was the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ItSKYk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evictions Museum<\/a> in Vila Aut\u00f3dromo, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/38frSJP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Zone<\/a> of Rio, represented by Maria da Penha. We tell our stories. We strive to preserve our memories. We also built this city, this country. We work, we pay our taxes. It&#8217;s not fair that we have to leave our homes, which we worked hard to build.\u201d She also mentioned that, at the beginning, the residents had no understanding of what the museum would be. \u201cI never imagined that I would be part of a museum because, in my ignorance, I thought that only those who had some legacy in politics or history deserved a museum. Poor people like us had no right to tell our own story. To my astonishment, I found that fighting for my home, I was fighting for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2yonvZb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my history and my memories<\/a>.\u201d On May 18, 2021, the Evictions Museum turned five.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Perfil-do-Museu-do-Horto-no-Guia-de-Museus-e-Memorias-da-Rede-Favela-Sustentavel-RFS.-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-67501\" title=\"Profile of the Horto Museum in the Sustainable Favela's Guide of Museums and Memories\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Perfil-do-Museu-do-Horto-no-Guia-de-Museus-e-Memorias-da-Rede-Favela-Sustentavel-RFS.-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Perfil-do-Museu-do-Horto-no-Guia-de-Museus-e-Memorias-da-Rede-Favela-Sustentavel-RFS.-1.png 994w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Perfil-do-Museu-do-Horto-no-Guia-de-Museus-e-Memorias-da-Rede-Favela-Sustentavel-RFS.-1-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Perfil-do-Museu-do-Horto-no-Guia-de-Museus-e-Memorias-da-Rede-Favela-Sustentavel-RFS.-1-768x414.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next came the Horto Museum, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/315oUmx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horto<\/a> community in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JE5NQz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Botanical Gardens neighborhood<\/a>, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/318kJ9H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Zone<\/a>. Emerson de Souza showed slides and presented the museum, also mentioning the impact of the pandemic on the project. &#8220;We made a re-evolution of the museum with the pandemic. There is plenty of love, but unfortunately the [current] situation is not ideal for museums to function,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Horto has also been experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jpTh2e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">problems with forced evictions promoted by federal agencies<\/a>, which threaten <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aYAtqt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">621 families<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Horto-protest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-67502 size-content\" title=\"Protest &quot;No to the forced evition of Horto&quot;\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Horto-protest-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Horto-protest-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Horto-protest-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Due to the limitations and potentialities of the territory, the Horto Museum declares itself a &#8220;museum of paths: there is material and immaterial heritage in these paths. Each one has its particularities and specific dimensions. The <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29bDIsr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horto community is historical<\/a> and constitutive of the city of Rio and of Brazil.&#8221; Open in 2011, the museum has records from many generations, besides holding <em>mutir\u00f5es<\/em> (collective actions) and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ez2vHc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ecological actions<\/a>, because, according to de Souza, residents are greatly concerned with caring for nature in the same way <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xqu3c3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their ancestors always did<\/a>. &#8220;Today we see everything that Brazil is going through. We see the world suffering with global warming, deforestation, pollution. Planet Earth is crying out for help. It is important that we pass this on to future generations. Almeida said that the Association emerged from the <em>quilombo<\/em>\u2014as ancestral lands occupied by descendants of enslaved people in Brazil are called\u2014established in 1574 at the site of the old <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3bT8nJD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camorim Mill<\/a>, in the Pedra Branca Massif, West Zone of Rio. &#8220;One of the first runaway slaves from that time is from my family, and I am very proud of that. Their first act of resistance was to arrive at the place, work and flee,&#8221; said Almeida. &#8220;Besides <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2NVlbAf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being an open-air museum<\/a>, the <em>quilombo<\/em> is a training school. We have to make this connection between past, present and future. We have to resist to exist every day,&#8221; adds Almeida. This energized us, because it&#8217;s hard enough to keep the museum open with the pandemic,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Mar\u00e9 Museum started out with a group of young people who were tasked by the Catholic Church to film views from the church. This was back in the 1980s. They got excited, turned the camera a bit towards the street, got lost in them with the camera and started to film <em>macumba<\/em> chants, carnival parades and June festivities.
