Whether through <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3y0qmG9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life\u2019s daily demands<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2AWg0wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political activism<\/a>, from the fight against slavery in <em>quilombos<\/em> to our current so-called democracies, black women do politics in the streets and in political arenas all over Brazil, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2BElr6i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latin America<\/a> and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>These lenses are the starting point for the Portuguese-language podcast \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/spoti.fi\/2XvBzlE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From Building Quilombos to Democracy: Voices of Afro-Latin and Caribbean Women<\/a>\u201d in building a mosaic of voices made up of different generations of black women born between 1950 and 1990, aiming to explain not only the origins of the the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uJDtLK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day of Black Latin American and Caribbean Women<\/a>, July 25, but how black women create strategies to struggle and resist the invisibility and silencing of their voices by patriarchal and racist systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/editora-Panda-Books.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-67600 size-medium\" title=\"Tereza de Benguela. July 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37U4K3u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has its origin<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uIGsUU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Meeting of Afro-Latin American and Afro-Caribbean Women<\/a>, which took place in the Dominican Republic in 1992 bringing together 350 black women from 72 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The practical efforts of black women in Brazil\u2014in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3p1lrSs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">large community-integrated actions<\/a> in support of their families in peripheries and favelas, in survival strategies, or in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PYbBmR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political and feminist activism<\/a>\u2014build Brazilian democracy every day. Their bodies build Brazilian society, even if they are dehumanized in their day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n<p>Black women are those who suffer the most violence, those with the <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/3CXlOE2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest death rates<\/a> Still, they have hope and produce knowledge. Most of all, they demand access to full rights as citizens and to democracy.<\/p>\n<h3>Who Are the Voices Featured in the Podcast?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2W4t2jv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queen Tereza, as Tereza de Benguela<\/a> is known, led the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/31d8GHr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quariter\u00ea Quilombo<\/a>, a community of those who fled enslavement in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. She represents so many black women made invisible by official history. An ancestral voice that marks memory and this specific day, Tereza de Benguela&#8217;s path has been gaining notoriety. A symbol of resistance, she lived in the 18th century in the region of Vale do Guapor\u00e9. Hailing from an African dynasty, Tereza de Benguela was enslaved and brought to Brazil where she was able to run away with her partner, Jos\u00e9 Piolho. After his death, she became the leader of the Quariter\u00ea <em>Quilombo<\/em>, which housed over 100 people, 73 Afro-Brazilian and 30 indigenous. The <em>quilombo<\/em> resisted from the decade of 1730 until the end of the century. Tereza de Benguela is still a reference for the women of the municipality of Vila Bela\u2014where there is currently an intergenerational women&#8217;s group called <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3A8KNlZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heiresses of the Quariter\u00ea Collective<\/a>\u2014but also for Afro-Brazilian women nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Journalist and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2O0QaBe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Movement<\/a> activist <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VSY7fb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniela Gomes<\/a> was born in 1982. Born and raised in the periphery of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVmAZH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a>, she is assistant professor of African Studies at <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3EAndBl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Diego State University<\/a>. With a doctorate in African and African Diaspora Studies from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3k0mqQU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Texas<\/a><span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">, she researches the transformative power of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\">hip-hop as a tool for the empowerment of black youth in S\u00e3o Paulo. In <\/span><span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\">2016, Gomes delivered <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3j2K4eV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Power of Hip-Hop<\/a><\/em> at TEDx S\u00e3o Paulo, where she was able to speak about her activism and relationship with the hip-hop movement. In 2019, she gave a talk entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3AMAm7B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Impact of Bolsonaro in Brazil<\/a> <\/em>for PBS&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/to.pbs.org\/3mdYP1J\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blackademics<\/a><\/em> program, on North American public television.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p9ef15viEwU\" width=\"670\" height=\"377\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Born in 1959, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hhFcn1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lucia Xavier<\/a> is one of Brazil&#8217;s most influential human rights and Black Movement activists. The daughter of a domestic worker and a radio host who died prematurely, Lucia opted for the college entrance exam to study Social Work, though she&#8217;d been fully prepared <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3yTVfgM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to study Law<\/a>. In 1992, she founded <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1aMOw88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Criola<\/a>, an NGO dedicated to fighting racism, sexism, and homophobia. She was a parliamentary advisor in the State of Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s Legislative Assembly (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZgF5j2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALERJ<\/a>) between 1991 a 1997. In 1999, she helped establish the Homosexual Defense Hotline (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3E8UWSd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DDH<\/a>), a pioneering public service for LGBTQIA+ people. At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/WCAR\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">III World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance<\/a>, organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/34de274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations<\/a> in Durban, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hMVVf5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Africa<\/a> in 2001, she served as proofreader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ojGTnx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Durban Declaration and Program of Action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Lucia-Xavier-Bianca-Santana-e-Daniela-Gomes.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-67766 size-large\" title=\"Lucia Xavier, Bianca Santana and Daniela Gomes\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Lucia-Xavier-Bianca-Santana-e-Daniela-Gomes-1024x458.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Lucia-Xavier-Bianca-Santana-e-Daniela-Gomes-1024x458.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Lucia-Xavier-Bianca-Santana-e-Daniela-Gomes-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Lucia-Xavier-Bianca-Santana-e-Daniela-Gomes-768x344.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Lucia-Xavier-Bianca-Santana-e-Daniela-Gomes-1536x687.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Lucia-Xavier-Bianca-Santana-e-Daniela-Gomes.jpg 1924w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3xVDLPE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bianca Santana<\/a>, 37, is a journalist and writer with a master&#8217;s in Education and a doctorate in Information Science from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KERYuJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USP<\/a>). Her <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VXy4Ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thesis is about memory and the writings of black women<\/a>. Santana is the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3CVBCqS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>When I Discovered Myself Black<\/em><\/a>, and organizer of collections <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3iV42cy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Ancestral Innovation of Black Women<\/a>: Everyday Tactics and Policies<\/em>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mjtTNL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insurgent Voices of Black Women<\/a>: From the 18th Century to the First Decade of the 21st Century<\/em>, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3k5QNFr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Educational Resources<\/a>: Collaborative Practices and Public Policies<\/em>. She is executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XCCIb2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casa Sueli Carneiro<\/a> and an active member of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3nDdSiT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNEafro Brasil<\/a>, a movement that helps comprise the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3sijTVl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Coalition for Rights<\/a>. A columnist for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mcOjrB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECOA-UOL<\/a><\/em> and for <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2W7kduT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Gama<\/em><\/a> magazine, she also penned the biography <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37WCi0Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>I&#8217;m Still Black: The life of Sueli Carneiro<\/em><\/a>, that discusses four decades of activism by one of the most important figures in the history of Brazil&#8217;s Black Movement: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/30haJga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sueli Carneiro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With a master\u2019s in Journalism and English from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3or39vQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of North Carolina<\/a>, and a bachelor&#8217;s in Modern Languages from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2UtZWcp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UERJ<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WHHXWK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anielle Franco<\/a>, 37, currently works as a professor, writer, and lecturer as well as director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3chFB4T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marielle Franco Institute<\/a>. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XZZwQE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marielle<\/a>&#8216;s sister and proud of it,\u201d Franco is also the mother of two black daughters and is currently studying for a master\u2019s in Ethno-Racial Relations at the Federal Center for Technological Education of Rio de Janeiro (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2D8GNpA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEFET-RJ<\/a>). In July, she released <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3xVxCTL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Radical Political Imagination of Black Brazilian Women<\/em><\/a> (Oralituras 2021), a book of essays and speeches organized alongside Ana Carolina Louren\u00e7o. Currently <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/31iVC3k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Justice<\/a>&#8216;s Coordinator of Communication, Marinho is a human rights activist who participates in social movements against racism and for housing rights. She served with the Front for Popular Struggle (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mcPyH6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FLP<\/a>) supporting autonomous homeless occupations organized in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XE1xxx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Port Region<\/a> in the 2000s. Marinho lived in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3j8BIAI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chiquinha Gonzaga Occupation<\/a> and then in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JpV3OV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morro da Provid\u00eancia<\/a>, where she <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1OOnc0B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fought against the forced evictions imposed on the favela<\/a> leading up the Rio de Janeiro World Cup and Olympics. With the FLP as a starting point, she became a supporter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Ef6VII\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Network of Communities and Movements Against Violence<\/a>, a movement of mothers and relatives of victims of State violence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xPvBdV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sabrina Martina<\/a>, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2T3zXNM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MC Martina<\/a>, is a rapper, poet, and producer. At 23, MC Martina has been leaving her mark on the country\u2019s cultural scene. She is the creator of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Lkm6cF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slam Laje<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ImAzVp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>\u2019s first spoken word poetry battle, and one of the groundbreaking slams to take place inside a favela in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
