The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LmxMv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">murder of the young Congolese refugee<\/a> at his workplace, the Tropic\u00e1lia Kiosk, in broad daylight on <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XMIfdq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barra da Tijuca<\/a> beach in Rio de Janeiro, caused immense outrage and consternation. Photo: Rede Brasil Atual<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On January 24, Mo\u00efse Mugenyi Kabagambe, 24, was immobilized and beaten to death at the kiosk where he worked, the Tropic\u00e1lia, at Barra da Tijuca&#8217;s beachfront Post 8. Photo: Gabriel de Paiva\/Ag\u00eancia O Globo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As reported by his family, Kabagambe was murdered after <a href=\"https:\/\/wapo.st\/3ozEF2p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">having gone to collect late unpaid wages<\/a>. The total was for two days worked at the Tropic\u00e1lia Kiosk: R$200 (US$38). Photo: Dani Monteiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This case is yet another that lays bare the violence through which Brazil was built and consolidated: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/AntiracistFavelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3scSIvP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">xenophobia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3onRKMi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploitation of workers<\/a>, and job insecurity. The punches and blows that killed Kabagambe were the intersection of all of this. Since <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sppbz9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colonization by Belgium (1885-1960)<\/a>, the diversity of metals such as gold, iron, uranium, and cobalt have <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/34k5xNf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attracted the interest of global powers<\/a>. Over the course of the country\u2019s history, these interests have generated a series of armed conflicts that marked the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country was the scene of the continent\u2019s largest conflicts, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/34KJLSn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Congo War (1996-1997)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LjSNXu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Congo War (1998-2003)<\/a>. The latter killed approximately 3.8 million people and was the largest war in the modern history of Africa, the armed conflict with the highest death toll since <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sqJ6xJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World War II<\/a>. For this reason, it is also called the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Jg2Pqy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African World War<\/a>. Although it officially ended in 2003, the Democratic Republic of the Congo <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ISpA3U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continues to have armed conflicts<\/a> in certain provinces to the east. In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3HEj9RR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the UN<\/a>, over 600 human rights violations occurred per month, with at least 200 executions. This forced millions of families to <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/35CwuvG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seek refuge in other nations<\/a> as a way to escape the horrors of war.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69313\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69313\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/dr_congo_map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69313\" title=\"The Democratic Republic of the Congo. Source: Nations Online Project<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3GDuboS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNHCR<\/a>), there are over 918,000 refugees and asylum seekers from the DRC in other African countries. Together, the UNHCR, the International Organization for Migrations (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3oysIKx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IOM<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2iiXcRn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pares C\u00e1ritas-RJ<\/a> (a Rio-based refugee assistance organization) released a statement of regret over Kabagambe&#8217;s murder. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3up0R3h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the statement<\/a>, the organizations state that they \u201creceived, wit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h great dismay, the news of the death of Congolese refugee Mo\u00efse <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabagambe, 24, brutally beaten in Barra da Tijuca, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVA7k7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Zone<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro.\u201d In another section of the text, the organizations declared that the Congolese \u201cwas loved by the whole Pares C\u00e1ritas RJ team, who watched him grow up and integrate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">As equipes do ACNUR, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/parescaritasrj?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@parescaritasrj<\/a> e da <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OIMBrasil?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@OIMBrasil<\/a> receberam, com consterna\u00e7\u00e3o, a not\u00edcia da morte do refugiado congol\u00eas Mo\u00efse Kabagambe, de 24 anos, brutalmente espancado na Barra da Tijuca, zona oeste do Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p>Mais informa\u00e7\u00f5es: &#x1f449; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WAyWd4Fsqy\">https:\/\/t.co\/WAyWd4Fsqy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i2NXT8ca7I\">pic.twitter.com\/i2NXT8ca7I<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ACNUR, Ag\u00eancia da ONU para Refugiados (@ACNURBrasil) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ACNURBrasil\/status\/1488253469492457472?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 31, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mo\u00efse Kabagambe, a Congolese citizen, tried to escape the hard reality of his country by taking refuge in Brazil. What he and his family did not expect was that reality would also be very difficult for them here. They did not imagine that he could become a victim of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ryLPpD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racist colonial violence on Brazilian soil<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">Voc\u00ea vem para um pa\u00eds em busca de ref\u00fagio da guerra, mas acaba encontrando mais viol\u00eancia.
