The results were presented\u00a0during its last meeting of 2021, with 79 <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mlFQ5n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">network members<\/a> in attendance from favelas across <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IqnU52\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Rio de Janeiro<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SFN-new-structure-2021.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-69484\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SFN-new-structure-2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SFN-new-structure-2021.png 2270w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SFN-new-structure-2021-620x549.png 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SFN-new-structure-2021-710x629.png 710w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/SFN-new-structure-2021-768x680.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Tx1mVa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Favela Network<\/a> brings together favela collectives installing solar panels, building bio-systems to treat sewage, setting up green roofs and community gardens, strengthening community belonging through grassroots museums and initiatives that act to guarantee and protect their communities, collecting their own data on public health as an advocacy tool, and much more.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United in their belief that <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Whul8s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favelas are a source of solutions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Tx1mVa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainability<\/a>, Sustainable Favela Network members are those facing down, every day, the challenges brought about by Rio&#8217;s chronic <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SQPOTc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government neglect<\/a>. the network currently includes 195 leaders from 127 of Rio&#8217;s favelas, 70% of whom are black\/indigenous and 66% are women. The SFN also includes 232 technical allies and volunteers from numerous organizations and movements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/mapa.favelasustentavel.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new map<\/a> includes a total 120 initiatives, located in 183 favelas across Greater Rio, some projects working in multiple communities. In 2021, the SFN organized itself according to 11 propositive thematic objectives: climate justice, socio-environmental education, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participatory policy-making, local culture and memory, food sovereignty, collective health, solidarity economy, right to sanitation, energy justice, just transport and sustainable housing. All future actions will be connected by these cross-cutting themes. In 2022, the network will be carrying out a large-scale climate justice project that will include numerous collective actions, trainings, media campaigns and the setting up of decentralized solar and green infrastructure systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Importance of Mapping Community Solutions<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69436\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Alfazendo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69436\" title=\"City of God's Alfazendo Project has been applying Freirian socio-environmental education in the community's schools for over 20 years. \" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Alfazendo-620x341.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Alfazendo-620x341.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Alfazendo-768x422.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Alfazendo.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">City of God&#8217;s Alfazendo project has been applying Freirian socio-environmental education in the community&#8217;s schools for over 20 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XIDQsW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asset-Based Community Development <\/span><\/a>(ABCD), which <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3GZJTeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing worldwide<\/a> over the past thirty years, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a more effective strategy for urban and community development than historical alternatives, whether in the presence of or without government investment. ABCD is employed by the Sustainable Favela Network, and involves focusing development strategies on the talents available in each community and in the potential of people, projects and territories, seeking to identify opportunities and investments for community development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on ABCD principles, the SFN <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SFNReport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/RFSMapa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Map&#8217;s first edition<\/a> in 2017<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <a href=\"http:\/\/mapa.favelasustentavel.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new map<\/a> offers robust possibilities for research, including a calculator and filters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The user can, for example, conduct a precise search for SFN projects led by women, using a 100% volunteer team and focused on a specific Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) or on a specific SFN objective, or projects that were active during the pandemic:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h3dDBGvM6Yo\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Producing a map is one of the most efficient and practical ways of introducing the initiatives active in an area, in this case in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Technical Aspects of Mapping Favelas<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69441\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Providencia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69441\" title=\"Provide\u0302ncia Agroecolo\u0301gica \/ Horta Inteligente \/ Naturale\u0302 are partners in setting up green areas and in providing environmental education at Morro da Provid\u00eancia.\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Providencia-620x620.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Providencia-620x620.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Providencia-629x629.jpg 629w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Providencia-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Providencia.jpg 1224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Provide\u0302ncia Agroecolo\u0301gica \/ Horta Inteligente \/ Naturale\u0302 are partners in setting up green areas and in providing environmental education in Morro da Provid\u00eancia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sustainable Favela Network&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/RFSMapa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">original map<\/a> was developed on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Maps <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to its<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intuitive and accessible nature<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <a href=\"http:\/\/mapa.favelasustentavel.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new version<\/a>, however, is being hosted on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ArcGIS Online <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">platform<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which allows for greater interactivity and a more refined and complex search. We know that every tool has its limitations. For the Sustainable Favela Network map it was good to show a table with information on each group: what that group does, social media&#8230; It was [important to highlight] that there&#8217;s more to favelas than violence, like traditional maps [show when classifying them] as &#8216;risk zones.\u2019 Our map shows the importance of the people who are part of these territories. We tried to use mapping tools to reflect the reality of the communities&#8217; residents, of the network&#8217;s members&#8230; the map is there to bring people together.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the challenges identified by the team in preparing each map was how to deal with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3g91ghM\">lack of an address recognized<\/a> by official maps, or by zip code,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some locations. The solution found has been to send the projects&#8217; locations via <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WhatsApp <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in order to provide the precise coordinates of each initiative <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be used for the map<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among all the data that would be published on the map, these locations were subsequently sent to project leaders for confirmation. In operation for approximately four years, the school is located in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3nXX2vW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beira Pica-Pau<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3heGgVd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cordovil<\/a>, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a>. Da Silva recalled his participation in building the map<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It was extremely important to participate in the Sustainable Favela Network Map, since its dissemination will give us more visibility. According to the map, the four thematic objectives most served by the initiatives mapped are food security (47 projects), socio-environmental education (44 projects), culture and local memory (40 projects) and right to sanitation (38 projects).
