[OPINION]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sl6Se3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/em><\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sl6Se3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YhInCS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black July<\/a>, an international movement against racism, militarization and apartheid, organized by Rio de Janeiro favela movements and the mothers and relatives of victims of the State, held its <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3A1aeFM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sixth edition<\/a> in July 2021. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/6oJulhoNegro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The movement<\/a>, which began with an exchange with North American activists from Black Lives Matter in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, continues annually promoting an exchange between multiple countries. In 2021, Black July took place online between July 26 and 31, due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RD5IJR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coronavirus<\/a> pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>At 7pm, on the first day of the event, the <em>\u201cWar for Whom?\u201d<\/em> roundtable was held along with the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3tdqfrM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Amen<\/a>&#8216;s mini documentary \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3yfWarx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black July: Against Racism, Militarization and Apartheid<\/a><\/em>,\u201d produced for <em>RioOnWatch<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/AntiracistFavelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-racist series<\/a>. The main objective of the 6th Black July <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3eRX9GN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">program<\/a> was to connect struggles against militarization across the Global South.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0ItOD5agDT0\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>During the <em>\u201cWar for Whom?\u201d<\/em> roundtable, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3y3VKUW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connection between Brazil&#8217;s repressive apparatus<\/a> and the Israeli occupation in the militarization of Palestine was discussed.<\/p>\n<p>The event took place amid the aggressive <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3w6V2YU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colonial expansion in Palestine<\/a> and a few days after more recorded rights violations in the favelas of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/12oFBua\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parque Uni\u00e3o<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2SoOMWL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Holanda<\/a>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgZ9Y4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a>, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a>, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37hNRja\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detention of over 40 residents<\/a> during a more than 24-hour-long police operation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">Se liga morador! Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Vgm5RC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 1,300 settlers<\/a> once again invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, supported by Israeli forces, violently beating and arresting Palestinians in their place of prayer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fjuventudesanaud%2Fvideos%2F1382438235474079%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=267\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The slogans most heard among the far-right Israelis taking to the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/3l0b2X1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">death to Arabs<\/a>!\u201d, \u201cMohammed is dead!\u201d, \u201cthe second <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/359y34p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nakba<\/a> is coming!\u201d, \u201cyou&#8217;re all going to refugee camps!\u201d, \u201cPalestine does not exist!\u201d and the closest one to Rio&#8217;s reality, \u201ca good Arab is a dead Arab,\u201d so often heard in the Rio motto \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ezhkIz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a good criminal is a dead criminal<\/a>.\u201d These are absurd situations, territorialized expressions of militarist colonialism based on racism, apartheid and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2MDm1V9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">necropolitics<\/a>. In the narrow strip, where around 250 people were killed in that period as a result of Israeli bombings, including over 60 children, the almost 1,500 families whose homes were destroyed, and another 13,000 whose housing structures were seriously damaged will take a long time to rebuild.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0EzMNc-wow0\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 14-year blockade imposed by Israel prevents even the arrival of construction material, as well as hospital items, medicine, heating gas, electricity, food, water, etc. In addition to the trauma, many residents roam the streets, as abject poverty increases. The humanitarian crisis is dramatic. And Palestinians live in this situation without knowing when the next drone will drop bombs over their heads again.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XBhEZ7gQCpQ\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It is also not known when Rio will have its next police operation or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3tuR07R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">massacre, like the one that took place in May 2021<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Mv09Nq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacarezinho<\/a>, when 29 people were murdered and countless others were injured in one the deadliest police operations in the city&#8217;s history. In addition to having lasted over 24 hours, it was the result of the same <em>modus operandi<\/em> of the July 16 and 17 operation in Mar\u00e9: houses invaded, including numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37fjLN5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assaults against residents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Casa-invadida-pela-policia-sem-mandado-judicial-na-favela-do-Jacarezinho-vira-local-de-execucao-sumaria-feitas-por-policiais.-Neste-dia-28-moradores-perderam-suas-vidas.-Foto-por-Silvia-Izquierdo_AP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-69933 size-mh-magazine-slider\" title=\"House invaded by police without a court order in the Jacarezinho favela became the site of a summary execution perpetrated by police. Photo: Silvia Izquierdo\/AP\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Casa-invadida-pela-policia-sem-mandado-judicial-na-favela-do-Jacarezinho-vira-local-de-execucao-sumaria-feitas-por-policiais.-Neste-dia-28-moradores-perderam-suas-vidas.-Foto-por-Silvia-Izquierdo_AP-940x438.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All this happens, as denounced by the Black July international movement, \u201cas an affront and total failure to comply with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35oblSI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">precautionary measure that suspends police operations in the context of Covid-19<\/a>, issued by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3g8Bslu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazilian Supreme Court<\/a>.&#8221; As with the legal measure here, the affront to international law is well known to Palestinians. The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jNdIWx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by us for us<\/a>,\u201d which echoes in the communities of Rio de Janeiro, is the reality still perceived by those who resist the occupation.<\/p>\n<h3>Same Weapons<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Charge-Palestinos-e-negros-oprimidos-pelas-policiais.-Charge-por-Latuff-2020..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-69939 size-mh-magazine-slider\" title=\"Cartoon Palestinians and blacks oppressed by the police and showing solidarity. To join the movement organized by the Palestinians is also to fight against racism and militarization in Brazil. In an article entitled &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37dEX68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What do the favelas of Jacarezinho, Mar\u00e9 and Palestine have in common?<\/a>&#8220;,<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YnSENW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gizele Martins<\/a>, a grassroots communicator from Mar\u00e9 and a member of the favela movement in Rio, points out that there are many similarities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEarly in the morning, on May 15, I came across a post shared on Facebook by a Palestinian: it was the image of a Palestinian child killed as a result of the Israeli bombings in Gaza. The child held a coin in his hand. I immediately remembered a case that took place in 2008, in the favelas of Mar\u00e9, in Rio de Janeiro, when the boy <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2WQhFRV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matheus Rodrigues<\/a>, who was only eight years old, left home to buy bread, was shot by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WQxnqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Military Police<\/a> and died in front of his house, also holding a one-real coin in one of his hands.<\/p>\n<p>On that day, in Mar\u00e9, I remember that, in order to hold back the population protesting against the murder, the same police that killed Matheus returned to the scene with an armored car to ward off protesters. These are childhoods lost within two territories that survive the daily massacre caused by racism, militarization and apartheid. Let&#8217;s fight against military and death policies, let&#8217;s fight together, from Palestine to the favelas of Rio, for the right to life!
