The event was organized by Candombl\u00e9 priestess <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1OVP108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heloisa Helena Costa Berto<\/a>, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iyalorix\u00e1<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Priestess] Luizinha de Nan\u00e3, as she is known in her faith, and her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [place of worship], situated in the same neighborhood. For this reason, in many of her speeches, the matriarch made sure to praise the power of collectivity that made the event possible. Helping amplify her voice, support came from many fronts including local heads of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XZ1G1E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Candombl\u00e9<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3oGQMbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umbanda<\/a> temples (traditional Afro-Brazilian religions)<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influential leaders from organizations in Rio\u2019s West Zone and from other parts of the city such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3wty6T0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Zone Solidarity Web<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3wtYT1L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afrikeran\u00e7a<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3TfNNHq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Criola<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3TdcT9N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women of Stone<\/a>; as well as teacher, writer and Candombl\u00e9 priest <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babalorix\u00e1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3AQllVj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00e1rcio de Jagun<\/a>. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias | <em>RioOnWatch<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>&#8220;The <\/b><em><b>Terreiro<\/b><\/em><b> Taught Me Everything!&#8221;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event\u2019s activities aimed to emphasize the importance of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2kc4KTH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro-Brazilian culture<\/a> for building a more tolerant and less racist society. The program included samba group Vozes da Rua, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3PRjnIv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jongo Eleda<\/a>, a dance performance in honor of Orisha Nan\u00e3 performed by ballerina Ana Beatriz Moreira, a space for children organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ALDqUC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alfazendo<\/a> (a socio-environmental organization from City of God), as well as a stand by the West Zone Solidarity Web. Throughout the day, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iyalorix\u00e1 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made sure to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underscore the meeting\u2019s purpose, not as a party, but as a political and educational act. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias | <em>RioOnWatch<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Having been <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1P2J6ZD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forcibly evicted<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IpNNB7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vila Aut\u00f3dromo<\/a> in the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics, Luizinha lost not only <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1TGtfVS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her house but her temple<\/a>. Some time after relocating to a plot of land facing the Jardim Pia\u00ed Channel, in Guaratiba, she felt compelled to redefine and reconstruct both her private space and common areas. And so, she did. In efforts to start the recovery process of the land and polluted waters of the Pia\u00ed Channel, Luizinha mobilized many people, institutions, public agencies, and leaders for the event on March 5. Once the land and water had been restored, Luizinha planned to create a garden of sacred herbs for common use in the surrounding area. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias | <em>RioOnWatch<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Luizinha analyzes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis event serves to assert the fight we initiated regarding religious and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/32aHwqF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental racism<\/a>, which runs very deep in the entire country although people have a very different image of us abroad. People are uninformed of the vastness of Afro-Brazilian culture and, for this reason, do not accept the Candombl\u00e9 religion. Our religion, and all others of Afro-Brazilian origin, are the most heavily discriminated against because they are black peoples\u2019 religions. For this reason, it is unable to perceive any movement made by the black population as anything but a threat. When such movements do happen, they are soon stopped through legal, economic, social, or educational means, or even physical force. The phrase \u201creligious intolerance\u201d can sometimes sound like a euphemism, as these acts should be called what they really are: religious racism. Data show that in Brazil religious intolerance has a preferred target: black religions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As stated in the following excerpt from the book <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religious Intolerance <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3TcW66G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teacher, PhD, and <em>Babalorix\u00e1<\/em> [<em>Candombl\u00e9<\/em> priest] Sidnei Nogueira<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe often hear that it is \u2018necessary to tolerate diversity.\u2019 This apparently progressive and well-intentioned expression evokes indignation in some of those being tolerated. No, we don\u2019t need to tolerate anyone. To \u2018tolerate\u2019 means something like to \u2018indulgently put up with something.\u2019 In other words, to bear with it, to be resigned, even without expressly consenting to such behavior. Those who tolerate do not respect, do not want to understand, do not want to grasp. It is something done with the eyes closed, as an obligation. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias | <em>RioOnWatch<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the National Human Rights Ombudsman (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3wMA0PC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ONDH<\/a>) from the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2LwzAEf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMFDH<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3wN95Dj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">111 complaints<\/a> of freedom of belief violations were filed this year between January 1 and March 16 alone. This means that the country officially records, on average, three reports of religious intolerance every two days. In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uzHt1T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">581 incidents<\/a> were reported, with the highest number (138) recorded in the state of Rio. Most of the victims are from communities and religions of African origin, which suggests a racial motivation behind the country\u2019s religious attacks. The violations against freedom of belief are therefore strongly related to race and religious racism.<\/p>\n<p>The black population in Brazil\u2014originally kidnapped from Africa to enrich European colonies\u2014has been resisting oppression for 500 years and keeps its traditions alive through the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3JvAqym\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">power of words<\/a>, collective memory, and the certainty that ancestry and power do not abandon their own. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias | <em>RioOnWatch<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is through actions such as Luizinha\u2019s, by a black woman from [the sacred force] <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ax\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3zMVmwp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black community in Brazil demands<\/a> reparations for the many layers of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3AUSPjZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">structural racism<\/a> in our society. For years, affirmative action policies have been demanded by important movements, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/30LSPQn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quilombos<\/a> to the Unified Black Movement (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3PHjAyD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MNU<\/a>), to others that paved the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The education of its youth by the community and through nature is a key principle of African philosophy and one of the pillars of religions of African origin. In planting a garden of sacred herbs on the banks of the Pia\u00ed Channel,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Iyalorix\u00e1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Luizinha de Nan\u00e3 simply wished to follow her ancestors and educate her community in caring for a natural good. Teacher, writer and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babalorix\u00e1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> M\u00e1rcio de Jagun reflected in a similar way at the event:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLuizinha brings to light very important reflections and actions for the understanding of our diversity. Every time we mention education with (the word) science in its singular form, we ignore other possibilities of the sciences, other possibilities of religions, of education. For example, religions of African origin find sacred inspiration from nature, with the true possibility of divine unfolding in earth, water, fire, and air. And that\u2019s exactly what Luizinha is providing. For other people, not just followers of these religions, to understand the possibility of finding God in leaves, wind, water, earth, and air.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71844\" style=\"width: 1030px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Babalorixa-Marcio-de-Jagun.-Foto-Barbara-DiasRioOnWatch-scaled-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71844\" title=\"Babalorix\u00e1 Marcio de Jagun. This is especially true considering the black population has been consistently denied access to educational spaces since the country was founded. Elders taught and spoke of their culture, feasts, ceremonies, and rituals in samba, capoeira and jongo circles and at moments of worship at the <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiros<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are still educational spaces today. This is what Luizinha strives to perpetuate in her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its surroundings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ommunity and ancestral education through nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a place of intense politics. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a community. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a quilombo<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with educational, behavioral, and social policies. I know this because I was educated by my family during the week and in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiros<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on weekends. So, I too was educated in a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As an only child, education in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was very important in my life because it taught me to share, to socialize and respect my elders. That\u2019s why the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a profoundly political space. It teaches respect for our elders, valuing what we have, caring for what belongs to us and to others. There is the superior role of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yalorix\u00e1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m\u00e3e de santo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [mother of saints who runs the terreiro]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as I am. Other roles then follow. And people must respect the elders as well as the young.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Luizinha de Nan\u00e3<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The event organizers made a point to set up diverse spaces in which the black community teaches and learns. For this reason, although it felt like a celebration, with samba and jongo circles and food, all these elements served as reminders that education happens in various ways. The regional coordinator of the Afrikeran\u00e7a project, <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iyalorix\u00e1 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcia \u00c1vila D\u2019Osun, added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe place importance in starting a pedagogy of sustainability, to work with the environment, because we are part of it. Not only for the human being inside the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ax\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [faith], but also for those in the surroundings (of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terreiros<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). We must remember that we are part of this sustainability, of nature, and that without it, our bodies do not exist, our food does not exist.
