It all started through a comic strip, but is growing into a social policy that offers books by black authors and reading circles to the little ones.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBlackiteracy\u201d, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3yvOxzl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">afrobetiza\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Portuguese, involves pairing literacy and anti-racist education in early childhood. The term, which has been gaining ground in the last decade, is based on the principle that <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3EZzIcn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no one is born racist<\/a>. For this reason, it understands the importance of empowering children to reduce the harms caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3AUSPjZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">structural racism<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FEscritoraJanineRodrigues%2Fvideos%2F2081784745439655%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><b>Representation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father of six-year-old twins, both black with Autism Spectrum Disorder (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3VVgB9w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASD<\/a>), Estev\u00e3o Ribeiro decided to act against the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3VLZc2G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lack of representation of black children<\/a> in children\u2019s books and comics. Fatherhood led Ribeiro, 43, to create <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3rMn1cY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renata Tinta<\/a><\/span>\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R\u00ea Tinta to fans, and also a play on words in Portuguese denoting dark skin and black pride<\/span>\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2018. The anti-racist comics empower children and adults and teach blackiteracy through social critiques that reflect on structural racism. Currently a resident of the outskirts of Niter\u00f3i, Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s sister city across Guanabara Bay, he\u2019s lived in the neighborhoods of Beltr\u00e3o, in Fonseca, and currently lives in Santa Rosa. Aside from race-related themes, Ribeiro weaves in others such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/213Si68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">religion<\/a>, fatherhood and motherhood, politics, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3rpCQWx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ancestry<\/a> into his work, from a black perspective. R\u00ea Tinta has already reached nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3RUiAHU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15,000 followers on Instagram<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEducation is also part of our job. We have to share our knowledge, as many of our elders did with us. We can learn so much through stories. And so, just like someone in the community tells their stories, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3VLWcCN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">griots<\/a> share their stories from the past. By age 21, he published his first comic strip in Esp\u00edrito Santo\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jornal Not\u00edcia Agora<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After moving to Rio de Janeiro almost 15 years ago, his comic strips were published in the newspapers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O Dia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meia Hora<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The first pile of money a black person gets their hands on goes to buying their mom a house!\u201d \u2013 \u201cYes, and just for the mom!\u201d \/ \u201cTheir dad isn\u2019t even on their minds!\u201d \u2013 \u201cHow so?\u201d \/ \u201cTheir dad is present in his abandonment! That never leaves anyone\u2019s mind!\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a black man and father of two black autistic girls led Ribeiro to create an empowered character, who\u2019s educating other children like his own daughters.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a father of twin girls and they\u2019re on the autism spectrum. One of them has slightly more trouble with speaking, so it\u2019s yet another challenge. My biggest challenge at the moment is their independence. It\u2019s like I\u2019m working so that they can enjoy better conditions to increasingly develop and become independent adults. This is what I\u2019m fighting for now. By the time you make it back to the Academy, it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll still be the last black person to have won Best Actor.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The books telling the adventures of R\u00ea Tinta are already in the hands of over 20,000 children from the Rio de Janeiro state public school network, teaching blackiteracy to kids of all backgrounds. And the story that empowers so many children almost never came to be, said Ribeiro. Because he almost gave up on drawing.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started drawing early on, but stopped because I kept running into people with much more talent than me, and I thought my talent was limited to writing. So I dedicated myself to writing until I was 20 years old. When I had to write my bio, I realized I had no biographic entries. So then I started drawing myself&#8230; I started working, but independently, because when you write comics, you always depend on a cartoonist. And not everyone is up for investing in stories as much as you, their creator, isn\u2019t that right? From then on, this type of need ended up instilling a desire to draw, and I thought: I\u2019m going to go back to drawing.\u201d \u2014 Estev\u00e3o Ribeiro<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days, Ribeiro feels that believing in his gift was the right response for his journey and for the journeys of thousands of other children and adults, black and white, around the world. \u201cThe R\u00ea Tinta comic strips are featured in school tests. Some made it to university exams and others to educational textbooks.
