With <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3VCYqVJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60,345,999 votes<\/a>, he defeated President <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/354OHC6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jair Messias Bolsonaro<\/a>, 67, from the Liberal Party (PL), who received 58,206,354 votes. With over 60 million votes, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3U6xxrC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lula received more votes in this election than anyone in Brazilian history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lula&#8217;s win in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3TTDqsf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 elections<\/a> runoff was the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FwAaip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">narrowest margin since the country&#8217;s re-democratization following<\/a> military rule. The difference between candidates was just <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3VCYqVJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2,139,645 votes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after his victory was confirmed, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3DljDv3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lula gave his first speech<\/a> as president-elect in S\u00e3o Paulo. It&#8217;s something palpable: something we feel in our flesh and build every day. It was this democracy, in the broad sense of the word, that the Brazilian people chose today at the ballot box. This is the democracy\u2014real, concrete\u2014that we were committed to throughout our campaign.\u201d \u2014 President-Elect Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He also promised to resume with people&#8217;s conferences so that the population can tell government leaders what they wish for and want as public policies for social welfare.<\/p>\n<p>In the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Workers&#8217; Party candidate\u2014who was elected by a coalition of 15 parties known as the Broad Front for Democracy\u2014was defeated by Bolsonaro, <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/3SRKEfv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who won in 72 municipalities<\/a>. In the state capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro, the final count went to Bolsonaro with 52.66% of the vote while Lula received 47.34%.<\/p>\n<p>However, in electoral zones 21, 161 and 162, which encompass the group of favelas that make up <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ImAzVp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2CYrDGT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo da Penha<\/a>, and the neighborhoods of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/38BRUa3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olaria<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Ro0rmP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramos<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fVGHnF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bonsucesso<\/a> and surrounding areas which include the favelas of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rNMXO3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mar\u00e9<\/a>, Lula won with 118,650 votes according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3DKuy30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Superior Electoral Court (TSE) data published in the newspaper <em>Estad\u00e3o<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, newspaper <em>Voz das Comunidades<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Dr4g4a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published images of residents celebrating Lula&#8217;s victory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">Com bandeiras, bon\u00e9s e camisas, moradores do CPX Alem\u00e3o celebram o resultado final da corrida eleitoral. The Workers&#8217; Party candidate had the largest number of votes in the favela.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Adding up the results in all three electoral zones, Lula gained 11,715 more votes than Bolsonaro, who received 106,935 votes. Lula won the election in the 21st electoral zone with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fq0MHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">53.11%<\/a>, and in the 161st electoral zone with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fq0MHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">57.53%<\/a>, but lost to Bolsonaro in electoral zone 162, where the incumbent received <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fq0MHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51.54%<\/a> of votes.<\/p>\n<p>But the real surprise came with the red dot that opened up in Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s West Zone. Founder of internationally recognized community newspaper <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Iv4H5h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voz das Comunidades<\/a><\/em><em>,<\/em> one of the country&#8217;s most important community news outlets, Rene Silva went to S\u00e3o Paulo after voting in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p>Lula promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gmNtHX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">return to Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>, now as president. \u201cI will go back to Complexo do Alem\u00e3o as president of Brazil to thank you all. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3SIwxZO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favelas aren&#8217;t full of criminals<\/a>, they&#8217;re full of hardworking people,\u201d he told Rene, who <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sLTGzU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published the video on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">O presidente eleitou mandou um recado para o povo do Complexo do Alem\u00e3o e das favelas do Rio de Janeiro!!! Before the march down Estrada do Itarar\u00e9, Lula met with the <em>Voz das Comunidades<\/em> project and was given a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3SIwxZO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cap with the letters CPX written on it<\/a>, which is the acronym for Complexo do Alem\u00e3o and denotes pride in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Images of the president wearing the accessory went viral on social media and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3SIwxZO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were used by Bolsonaro supporters to spread misinformation<\/a> linking the initials to the word \u2018<em>cupincha<\/em>,\u2019 which means partner and that, according to those spreading the false information, is used by members of criminal factions.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout election day on October 30, artists, politicians but, above all, residents of favelas and of the city of Rio showed their support and vote for Lula on social media wearing the CPX cap to vote.<\/p>\n<p>The CPX effect seems to have made Lula&#8217;s defeat in the state capital a less bitter pill to swallow among his supporters. This coalition also gained the support of other parties for the runoff forming a broad democratic front.<\/p>\n<p>Lula was president of Brazil between 2003 and 2010 and returns to the post now, 12 years later. He is married to Ros\u00e2ngela Silva, known by her nickname Janja. Photo: Miguel Schincariol\/AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3zWhjKn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazilian elections<\/a> were front page news in many international news outlets, underlining the expectation created around the election the world over.<\/p>\n<p>Among the highlights are British newspaper <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3NlKY4Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>, <\/em>and US newspapers <em><a href=\"https:\/\/on.wsj.com\/3NnkhNk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/3TKlzEt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times,<\/a><\/em> with the latter reporting that Lula&#8217;s win \u201ccompletes a stunning political revival\u201d and \u201cends Mr. Bolsonaro&#8217;s turbulent time as the region&#8217;s most powerful leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For over 24 hours after Lula&#8217;s win, President Jair Messias Bolsonaro, who will govern the country until December 31, had not made any statements through official channels or social media accounts, making only a <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.it\/3t1Q6Sx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short proclamation the following day<\/a>, which was accompanied by a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3UsGz2i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">truck blockade by his supporters on roads across the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to newspaper <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gWyLaW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Folha de S. Paulo<\/a><\/em>, the president&#8217;s advisors told the ministers who went to see him on the evening of Sunday, October 30, that he had gone to sleep following the results.
