At <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3WfHAvI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela Mundo\u2019s<\/a> Christmas party, the greatest gift is nourishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uCrFx0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imaginations of black children<\/a> from the favela with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FkhwGW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive black references<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Black Santas, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FSuMpN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rodrigo Fran\u00e7a<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FrcRVI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Felipe Canela<\/a>, were the main attraction at the Afro-Brazilian-centered Christmas offered by the NGO Favela Mundo, whose projects reach 900 children and teens. The community events with black Santas took place on December 6 and 12, 2022 in the Rio de Janeiro favelas of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1j6imGD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caju<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wwjhWi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of God<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SAjeFJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acari<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Papai-Noel-do-Favela-Mundo-scaled.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73359\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Papai-Noel-do-Favela-Mundo-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1030\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Papai-Noel-do-Favela-Mundo-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Papai-Noel-do-Favela-Mundo-620x334.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Papai-Noel-do-Favela-Mundo-1168x629.jpg 1168w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Papai-Noel-do-Favela-Mundo-768x414.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fran\u00e7a performed on December 6 in City of God, in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVA7k7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Zone<\/a>, and Canela on December 8 and 12 in Acari and Caju, both in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a>. In doing so, they brought to local youth a world of possibilities and references that will help build their subjectivities as Afro-Brazilians and favela residents. The black Santas distributed children\u2019s books as gifts, reinforcing the importance of education and reading, particularly among children and youth. These Christmas celebrations in the favelas also featured student presentations, music, and games.<\/p>\n<p>This is the third year that Fran\u00e7a has played Santa Claus and the second for Canela. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FzR4LF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcello Andriotti<\/a>, founder of Favela Mundo, part of the NGO\u2019s mission is to introduce black references in positive and empowering roles. They offer music classes focused on Brazilian folklore, dance classes and parties and commemorative events at special times of year.
