Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ZtnOPf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/em><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3Ir0DiJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria Conga<\/a> was a <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3JXmCgN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quilombola<\/a> <\/em>leader who led the fight against slavery in the city of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2L1AXLY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mag\u00e9<\/a> in Greater Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XQQdyV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baixada Fluminense<\/a> region in the early 19th century. She is an example, a heroine of resistance against slavery who must be remembered and whose story must be preserved and defended. For this reason a bust was inaugurated in her honor <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/40QdfqR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in November 2021<\/a> on the Piedade Pier\u2014a tourist spot in Mag\u00e9. However, just over a year later, on February 5, 2023, the monument was defaced with a Nazi swastika. The perpetrator is yet to be identified.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nazi and racist crime inflicted on the bust of Maria Conga led to an organized protest in front of her monument, defending the memory of the Congolese-Brazilian leader, where around 50 people gathered together in a symbolic \u201cMaria Conga Coronation.\u201d This ceremony fulfilled, around 200 years later, something for which Maria Conga was born and had been prepared for by her parents, but which, thanks to being kidnapped and trafficked to Brazil, never happened: being crowned. An <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3lSk4Ib\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African Princess<\/a>, the daughter of a Congolese King in the 18th century, Maria Conga was finally crowned and is no longer a princess: she is a queen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the coronation, the rally was also aimed at demanding government ensure the restoration and protection of the monument, investigate those responsible for the crime, prevent future damage, and stop neglecting and disregarding the <em>quilombola<\/em> communities of Mag\u00e9. The city has <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3IoeWV2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three quilombos<\/a> [traditional ancestral communities established by descendants of enslaved Africans] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formally recognized by the Palmares Foundation. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremony was attended by the Maria Conga Quilombo, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/40Qf1Z3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feital Quilombo<\/a>, Rio de Janeiro Quilombola Communities Association (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3YxT5A6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACQUILERJ<\/a>), Warrior Saint George Spiritist Center, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/418D31B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guarani Collective<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3xlxbnE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mag\u00e9 Climate Forum<\/a>, Unified Black Movement (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3Ev6AsD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MNU<\/a>), Right to Memory and Racial Justice Initiative (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3Z8rjdF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDMRJ<\/a>), Mag\u00e9 Popular Struggle Committee, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3E7TNvW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio de Janeiro State Front for Decarceration<\/a>, Racial Equality and Human Rights Commissions of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/40PkuPL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazilian Bar Association (OAB &#8211; Mag\u00e9-Guapimirim Chapter)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/42oaRaN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Network of Communities and Movements Against Violence<\/a>, as well as representatives of the Mag\u00e9 City Hall, the <em>m\u00e3edata<\/em> (as they call the mandate) of Rio de Janeiro Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3RVWS85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thais Ferreira<\/a>, and Federal Deputy <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3lDWA9y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henrique Vieira<\/a>. The protest was also attended by local residents and supporters of the historic and religious figure of Maria Conga.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Life Story of the Congolese-Mag\u00e9 <em>Quilombola<\/em> Leader<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Conga\u2019s life was marked by the struggle that culminated in the liberation of enslaved Africans and Afro-Brazilians in Brazil. Through coordinated group escapes, facilitated by a tunnel she built connecting slave regions to the area where her quilombo was located, she helped the enslaved people of Mag\u00e9 conquer freedom. At 18, she was sold to a slaveowner from Mag\u00e9. After years of struggle, she was granted her freedom at age 35, at which point she founded the quilombo. The figure of Maria Conga is fundamental to the city of Mag\u00e9\u2019s history. One of the organizers of the ceremony, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3Kc4JMK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcos Cesar Junior<\/a>, teacher and resident of the Maria Conga Quilombo, spoke about the historical importance of the Congolese-Brazilian heroine:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe was the founder of the Maria Conga Quilombo, located in the first district in the area surrounding Morro Maria Conga. She is attributed with organizing the escapes of enslaved people that were illegally landed following the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3lF0Rdb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feij\u00f3 Law<\/a> [the first law to prevent the importation of enslaved people] at <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/411me8r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piedade Beach<\/a> [in Mag\u00e9], where the Auction Square used to be. The Feital Quilombo is also in the neighborhood of Piedade, another reference point in the fight against slavery. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/411mUuO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giselle Florentino<\/a> from the Right to Memory and Racial Justice Initiative (IDMRJ) spoke at the event about the need to form a new perspective in the debate so that it is not just about the forming of quilombos, but about how they were critical to the forming the Baixada Fluminense region itself:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been argued that the Baixada Fluminense emerged from the region&#8217;s agricultural development and we want to retell another story from the point of view of Black people, indigenous people, and immigrants. [The story] that the Baixada Fluminense was founded from a complex of quilombos run <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uJW7mW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by Black women<\/a> called &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3XuOj51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hidra de Igua\u00e7u<\/a>.&#8217; The Maria Conga Quilombo resisted attempts by the Portuguese Royal Guard for 100 years and was considered one of the most resistant and militant in the days of the Crown. She fought for those who became her children from when they arrived at the quilombo until the end of her life. All attendees showed outrage over the violence toward memory represented by the attack on Maria Conga&#8217;s bust and reinforced the need for the crime to be investigated and for those responsible to be punished. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3jTqZAt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anderson Ribeiro<\/a>, lawyer and human rights defender in the Baixada, president of the Human Rights Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association, Mag\u00e9 and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2X2Ibog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guapimirim<\/a> Chapter, and member of the Guarani Collective, listed the crimes and respective penalties that could be imposed on the criminals: &#8220;The crimes are incitement to racism, condoning Nazism, and damaging public property. The penalty for the crime of damage to public property is six months to three years detention, and the crimes of incitement to racism and condoning Nazism are two to five years, and the offender may be banned from visiting the place where the vandalism was committed for three years.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcos Cesar explained how \u201cthe fascist and racist violence existed from the moment they did what they did&#8230; They branded swastikas all over her, on her forehead, on her cheek, on her lip, on both breasts. On the day, we saw it, and it was like this. She invited event participants, from representatives of social movements and collectives to public officials, to mobilize in support of the Maria Conga <em>quilombola<\/em> community:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor me, it\u2019s very important for us to have events like this, historical events, acts of love. It\u2019s very memorable, I think it is very important for us to have a museum, to build our history. This is why the bust is here&#8230; It is very important that we build and go forward. It [the coronation] is very beautiful, but I need us to move away from the monuments that we defend so much! With due respect [to those present], let&#8217;s focus on a human being that is still breathing! Because if we can\u2019t save humans, we cannot save anything else.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alfradique stressed that the act was one of repudiation, but also focused on drawing the attention of all present to the <em>quilombola<\/em> cause that is currently <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3SAivLl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being delegitimized<\/a>, violated, missing broad political and social support.
