Favelas Rebuilding the Country<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was held by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RFI3sp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marielle Franco Favelas Dictionary<\/a> in partnership with the Institute of Scientific and Technological Communication and Information in Health (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZEAIw6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICICT<\/a>) of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2mf6Pze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fiocruz<\/a>) at its <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3TeUpGt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manguinhos Library<\/a>. Among those who attended were activists, favela residents, and people committed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2DtAVVU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memory of the councilwoman<\/a> who was a victim of political femicide five years ago. Photo: Priscila Silva<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outras Mar\u00e9s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also introduced participantes to photography by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FqUyRm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Periphery and Memory Photography Collective<\/a>, taken by grassroots photographers including <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3YQa0gN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thiago Ripper<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3yHesUq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AF Rodrigues<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Jg90gd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rat\u00e3o Diniz<\/a>. Photo: Priscila Silva<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonia Fleury began by reflecting on the importance of the Favelas Dictionary and highlighting the reasons for its creation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It was conceived as a space of knowledge about favelas, be it knowledge produced in universities or cultural spaces, or be it grassroots knowledge, the stories and struggles of favela leaders, so that this information can circulate and reach young people forming collectives, so that they can access the story that History didn&#8217;t want to tell, but that we are committed to telling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Marielle, who was a supporter and collaborator of the Dictionary, was brutally silenced by her assassination, we committed ourselves to take up all of her causes and share them in the fight for democracy, against the oppression and assassinations that are constantly perpetuated in the favelas [and we renamed the dictionary after her].\u201d \u2014 Sonia Fleury\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodrigo Murtinho pointed out that this was the first public event ICICT had held to resume in-person activities since the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RD5IJR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pandemic<\/a>. Furthermore, he made a point of highlighting the power of this meeting and the presence of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2QJKTed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renata Souza<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2W5MYTc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00f4nica Francisco<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3yWylah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monica Cunha<\/a>, considered to be <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3kB4wST\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marielle\u2019s seeds<\/a>. For him, the assassination of Marielle and driver Anderson Gomes meant the opposite of what the people behind the crime wanted.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe live in a moment of rebuilding this country and this return is all about Marielle.\u201d \u2014 Rodrigo Murtinho\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cl\u00e1udia Rose spoke about the importance of personal and collective engagement. According to her, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2PYbBmR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we must follow in the footsteps of this Black woman from Mar\u00e9<\/a>. She hopes that the favela will increasingly take a stand, as it has done in the past, contesting spaces of power.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is our country!&#8230; Giving up is not our purpose in life. Photo: Priscila Silva<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then came the second panel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the Favela to Parliament<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebuilding Brazil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Representing <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Epo0VC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marielle&#8217;s legacy<\/a> in the political arena were State Deputy Renata Souza, Councilwoman Monica Cunha, and former State Deputy M\u00f4nica Francisco. The panel also consisted of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3lbHnNp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saulo Benicio<\/a>, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LIjoAj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL) in Nil\u00f3polis<\/a>, a city in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XQQdyV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baixada Fluminense<\/a>, representing State Deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3w9nA3r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dani Monteiro<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renata Souza, who, like Marielle, grew up in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgZ9Y4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0in the city&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a>, began her talk by highlighting the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/FavelaLanguage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linguistic racism<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Wvrv0E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favela residents suffer<\/a> when they use the everyday language of their communities. Regarded as less cultured, they are accused of not knowing how to speak. In this scenario, she highlighted the importance of the Favelas Dictionary, which <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3Zc1uZB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brings the language of Black people<\/a> and of the periphery to dictionaries. According to her, this helps break the paradigms of linguistic prejudice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting on &#8220;language, narrative, and creation of discourse,&#8221; the state deputy reaffirmed that the term she coined, political femicide, remains the best to characterize the brutal murder of her longtime friend Marielle Franco. Souza highlighted the power of naming things.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We need to speak out about what happened to Marielle, and in the eyes of the law, whatever isn&#8217;t named, whatever isn&#8217;t characterized, or categorized, doesn&#8217;t exist! We need to state that political femicide exists!&#8221; \u2014 Renata Souza<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She illustrated her argument by citing cases of emblematic women whose assassinations were directly linked to their ideological convictions and political actions, bringing to light the names of women who challenged the established powers with their struggle for social transformation and justice. One example was <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3nlYo8k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dorothy Stang<\/a>, a missionary and environmental activist who was shot dead in Par\u00e1, another was Judge <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3z0Yp3U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patr\u00edcia Accioli<\/a>, who &#8220;operated against militias and was killed by the State&#8217;s bullet, by agents of the State,&#8221; said Souza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming to the end of her exposition, Renata Souza commented on the importance of building narratives and on how essential it is that the favela and its grassroots communicators fill the spaces of media production. She reflected on how not having control over one&#8217;s own narratives and discourses costs communities dearly, and how in recent years the prevalence of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37bYG7x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake news<\/a> has served as a tool for online engagement, political gender violence, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2alCmJC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criminalization of poverty<\/a>, and racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInformation frees [us], but misinformation imprisons [us]. And it\u2019s this that\u2019s been happening over the last five years in this country. We need to have our instruments. I come from grassroots communication, I worked for the newspaper <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1qrgqzy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O Cidad\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Mar\u00e9. In order to talk about such a sensitive topic such as communication, it goes without saying that if we are contesting narratives and discourses, we need the instruments to do so.\u201d \u2014 Renata Souza<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With many tributes and important presentations throughout the event, near the end, M\u00f4nica Francisco reflected on Marielle&#8217;s representation and on the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3qxYAzU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black women from the favela in rebuilding Brazil<\/a>. She asked everyone to research the accomplishments of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Lb0l3k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black women in elected office<\/a>. As she concluded her talk, she was moved to tears remembering her friend, which touched everyone in the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMarielle challenged the powerful when she became the representation and voice of the invisible. Every day they produce our non-existence. We have brought the experience of the favela into government, our ability to cope with the best and the worst. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Hsbnta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black women are an institution in this country<\/a>.\u201d \u2014 M\u00f4nica Francisco<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monica Cunha also moved those present when she spoke, saying that if she had <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2fJnh5P\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angela Davis<\/a> as a reference\u2014a Black American woman, philosopher and activist\u2014that in the future, in the books and memory of her grandchildren\u2019s generation, she herself, Monica Cunha, would occupy a place of reference. She would be printed on the pages of the books as an activist, a Black elected official, a daughter of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3z0w8ul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Riachuelo<\/a>, a suburb in the North Zone of Rio, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1QHoVDK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mother of a victim of State violence<\/a>. And she concluded:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur purpose is to not allow our memory and our history to be forgotten. She made a comparison between Marielle and her son, Rafael da Silva Cunha, who was murdered by the State. The councilwoman further highlighted the importance of this event taking place at Fiocruz, in an area which lies between the favelas of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YoSrKr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manguinhos<\/a> and Complexo da Mar\u00e9, Marielle\u2019s home, and in an institution of international renown such as the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot letting the memory of Marielle die is turning the mourning into action, as we Black women and family members of victims of State violence are used to doing. To remember Marielle is to remember my son Rafael da Silva Cunha, is to say at every moment that these people have existed\u2026 and to have an institution with this reach legitimizing the narrative that says that the favelas matter, that these <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/40CvQps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggles that Marielle bore matter<\/a>, is very important to give even more credibility to the discourse that we have always echoed [about human rights].&#8221; \u2014 Monica Cunha<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1FwEZYwTHVtEzVdgBNGlBpCF6ti4VgANk\/preview\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event came to a close at around 2pm with reflections from Gastaldoni and Rat\u00e3o Diniz about the importance of photography and grassroots communication to share the reality, culture, and power of favela territories. Directly afterwards, the event was brought to an end with cultural performances by poet <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZbV4uv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deley de Acari<\/a> and self-identified \u201csinger and artivist,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3loDOmO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rachel Barros<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1e4B-cpSJdHL5AFWdsrJJuZKJSKYe1L8u\/preview\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FIYmL6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yesterday, today, and always<\/a>, the cry <em>Marielle Lives On!<\/em> echoes through the streets of Brazil, in a struggle that seeks to perpetuate the legislative legacy of the sociologist from the Complexo da Mar\u00e9. This cry represents movement and renewed hope, despite in 2023 there being <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Jf5KSk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#5YearsWithNoAnswer<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Jk4GMM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#JusticeForMarielleAndAnderson<\/a>. Through this direct attack on democracy, the murderers and the perpetrators of the crime believed that they would silence Marielle. However, they did not imagine that the councilwoman would become an <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3srpDv0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international symbol<\/a>, that her legacy would live on and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3NmY1Do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would sprout from her seeds<\/a>, which have taken root in the legislative branch and are blooming in the form of public policies.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1UuqNkhSTf0jQ2sbQpuIYIV6PUl9vvLHt\/preview\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Watch the recording of <em>Marielle Lives On!
