Photo: Vin\u00edcius Ribeiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3KEzJU9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/em><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4><b>On March 18, 2023, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2NzN011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Espa\u00e7o Casa Viva<\/a> in the favela of Manguinhos hosted the 27th meeting of the Favela University Forum, with the theme \u201cHealth Promotion and Knowledge Production\u2014Young Researchers in Action.\u201d The meeting discussed access and retention of Black youth from favelas in universities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3JUb11V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela University Forum<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3K4VpK0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FFU<\/a>) emerged in 2018 through an initiative by favela activists, mostly from <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3EEmP7A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2YoSrKr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manguinhos<\/a>, inspired by the theme \u201cscience to reduce social inequalities\u201d during the 2018 National Science and Technology Week (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3TMBe6S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SNCT<\/a>) organized by Brazil&#8217;s national health foundation, Fiocruz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Forum promotes conversations on paths to bring favelas and universities closer together, aimed especially at residents in higher education or taking university entrance exam prep courses, or who have already graduated from college. So far, there have been seven editions of the FFU, which took place alternately at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2xO9SHz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mar\u00e9 Museum<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3JIqimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museum of Life<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WRi6JK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fiocruz<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/43fqNgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Arts<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XiG2Ha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UFRJ<\/a>), and Espa\u00e7o Casa Viva.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74671\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FFU-Vinicius-Ribeiro-9-scaled-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74671 size-full\" title=\"Espa\u00e7o Casa Viva in Manguinhos hosted the 27th Meeting of the Favela University Forum. Photo: Vin\u00edcius Ribeiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the 27th Forum, work by three youth researchers who are residents of favelas was discussed: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3zdCHtM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anderson Alves<\/a>, who presented \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does Mona tell me? Stories of experiences of the sexual relations of \u2018bichas pretas\u2019 [slang term for Black LGBTQIA+ youth] during the Covid-19 pandemic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019; Dione Rodrigues and her research \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young Black Women, Health, and UERJ Student Support Policies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019; and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3G26Y2j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let\u00edcia Pinheiro<\/a><\/span>, with \u2018<i>Health, Psychoactive Substances, and Favela Youth in Acari.<\/i>\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event also featured a cultural performance by members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40lQv0Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pac\u2019St\u00e3o Collective<\/a>, which performs a rap circle of the same name in Manguinhos, and poetry reading by Eduardo Costa, also known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3zgAs8I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doisd<\/a>\u201d and founder of the collective, and Guilherme Ribeiro, also known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40lK5z6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GUIW<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3nggl80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andr\u00e9 Luiz Lima<\/a>, PhD in History of Science and Health at Casa de Oswaldo Cruz (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3JJakbA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PPGHCS\/COC<\/a>) and one of the founders of the Forum, the aim is to \u201cbring favela residents who have or want to have the university experience to understand the challenges of university life for residents of the urban periphery. These undoubtedly include a racial dimension, the issue of patriarchy, the issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1PB75xL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LGBTQIAP+ phobia<\/a>, economic issues, the issue of armed violence by the State, which prevents us from fully moving around the favela\u2026 I am one of those people. I graduated from the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2VA2tCY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IFCS<\/a>) at UFRJ and did my master\u2019s and PhD while living in Manguinhos. So, I know the difficulties we face.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Knowledge Production: Youth Favela Researchers in Action<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anderson Alves is a teacher who graduated from the Baixada Fluminense Faculty of Education (FEBF) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XiGIwl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UERJ<\/a>) and is working on a master\u2019s degree in Education, Contemporary Contexts, and Popular Demands at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3wcn0yT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UFRRJ<\/a>). He is part of the second edition of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/40Otmon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Young Investigators in Health and Youth Program<\/a> of the Fiocruz Youth Agenda (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/40GUW6l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AJF<\/a>). Born and raised in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XBcBhF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Realengo<\/a>\u00a0in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/38frSJP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Zone<\/a>, he currently lives in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JpV3OV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morro da Provid\u00eancia<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WO9a3S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Rio<\/a>. It was in the Provid\u00eancia favela where Anderson carried out his research \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does Mona tell me? Experience reports on the sexual relations of \u2018bichas pretas\u2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 focusing on Black LGBTQIAP+ youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy feeling was of belonging and being able to share what we experience with my own [people], but which is also being formalized in the format of a research project. It is fundamental for us to understand the importance, the relevance that we have with our training, with our production of knowledge. Photo: Vin\u00edcius Ribeiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dione Rodrigues is a Black woman who was born and raised in the West Zone of Rio and currently lives in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2CbTwHO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mangueira<\/a> favela in the city&#8217;s North Zone. She is a social worker who graduated from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and has a master\u2019s degree in Social Work from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She is also part of the second edition of Fiocruz Youth Agenda\u2019s Young Investigators in Health and Youth Program. Her research &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young Black Women, Health, and UERJ Student Support Policies&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studied the issues faced by young Black women studying Psychology at UERJ as beneficiaries of affirmative action. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[It&#8217;s essential to] have spaces like this, the Favela University Forum meeting, to discuss my research which talks about the reality of young Black women, which is also my reality, about meanings and possibilities of talking about ourselves, by us for us, talking about the space we occupy and about our perceptions of that space, about our demands and about our wishes. When we talk about research, we mainly talk about qualitative research. We are talking about subjectivity. That is what we, Black women, are talking about. Photo: Vin\u00edcius Ribeiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u00edcia Pinheiro was born and raised in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2XW8L4i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acari<\/a> favela and is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37l5Epz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fala Akari<\/a> collective. She is a social worker at the Fluminense Federal University of Rio das Ostras (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2J7BN7l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UFF<\/a>-CURO), a master\u2019s student in Social Work at UERJ, is part of the second edition of the Fiocruz Youth Agenda\u2019s Young Investigators Program, and is a researcher at the Jorge Careli Latin American Center for the Study of Violence and Health (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2C7xIOH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLAVES<\/a>). At the event, she presented her research on<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8216;Health, Psychoactive Substances, and Favela Youth in Acari&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reflected on the importance of academic research carried out by favela residents to counter the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3g91ghM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historical statistical erasure<\/a> of these majority Black territories.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThose of us who research and are in the favela also want to talk to our [people] about this, about our issues. We want to consider outcomes for the favela, we want to consider impacts, and we want to consider responses to the demands of our favela. A space like this, for dialogue and articulation, is very important\u2026 In the favela, there is a huge gap in data, in the production of statistics, because the State appears mainly through police operations. When we think about solutions for the demands of the favelas, there&#8217;s not enough data. Research has a very important task in society: to provide feedback for existing demands. The place of research becomes crucial for us to organize in the favelas.\u201d \u2014 Let\u00edcia Pinheiro<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Partners<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institutional support has been important in the creation and development of the Favela University Forum, including support from the UFRJ Extension Pro-Rectory (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/42LAEuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PR5<\/a>), Center for Studies and Solidarity Actions of Mar\u00e9 (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3JGl1f2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEASM<\/a>), represented by the Mar\u00e9 Museum, and Network of Social Enterprises for Socially Just, Democratic, and Sustainable Development (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40bDRSh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REDECCAP<\/a>), represented by Espa\u00e7o Casa Viva.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alessandro Machado from Fiocruz\u2019s Museum of Life commented on the importance of the partnership with the FFU. He highlighted the role of supporting and promoting the structuring of the Forum by these institutions. \u201cFiocruz has a responsibility as a Brazilian state institution in Manguinhos, [an institution] of excellence which develops research and technology within an area marked by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2WOboAg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favela stigma<\/a>. It has the responsibility of collaborating with these territories to strengthen public health, education, culture, and leisure initiatives which promote well-being for these territories, to strengthen the citizenship of these territories, and collaborate so that civil rights, human rights, and social rights are guaranteed in these locations. I think this is the institution\u2019s role, it can promote health in these territories.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Elizabeth Campos, coordinator of Casa Viva and resident of the Manguinhos favela, Espa\u00e7o Casa Viva is very similar to the Forum, precisely because it is a space working with <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1MjZbLO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1a40Qzc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1saUJ52\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culture<\/a> that encourages debates within the favela: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHosting an event like this at Casa Viva confirms the importance of social groups, social movements, social organizations, and social collectives in discussions, qualifying and bringing our issues closer to academia, always in a dialogic relationship, of exchanging knowledge, respecting knowledge, valuing place, and always seeking public policies that can improve student life during this period of university.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Pac\u2019St\u00e3o Collective&#8217;s Cultural Performance<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event ended with a cultural performance by the Pac\u2019St\u00e3o Collective of rappers from Manguinhos. The group has held cultural circles in Manguinhos for the last ten years.
