The event was a culmination of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/FavelaClimateMemory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memory circles held by five community museums<\/a> earlier this year: the Mar\u00e9 Museum, Sankofa Museum in Rocinha, Historic Orientation and Research Nucleus of Santa Cruz (NOPH) in Antares, Favela Museum (MUF) in Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho\/Cantagalo, and the Vidigal Memories Nucleus. The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/FavelaClimateMemory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voluminous climate memory narratives<\/a>, as told by residents themselves, resulted in the exhibition.<\/h4>\n<h3>An Exhibition in an Open Air Museum<\/h3>\n<p>The Vila Aut\u00f3dromo favela used to occupy a much larger area on the edge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3pLmhrv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacarepagu\u00e1 Lagoon<\/a> and Rio&#8217;s former racetrack. With a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rtuaxu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history marked by housing rights battles and resistance<\/a>, Vila Aut\u00f3dromo is now home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2s2A3Vr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evictions Museum<\/a>\u2014a community museum founded in 2016 following the forced eviction of hundreds of families in the period leading up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2NmQHdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014 World Cup<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2K0Ehr3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 Olympics<\/a>. Today, only a few houses and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/32NNIRf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 Oper\u00e1rio church<\/a> remain. The Evictions Museum was <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/244DsMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founded there in 2016<\/a> with the mission of keeping alive the memory of communities threatened with eviction.<\/p>\n<p>It is thus <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/VidigalClimateMemory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not by chance<\/a> that the Evictions Museum was selected as the location to launch the Favela Climate Memory exhibition. The launch event featured a variety of activities encouraging reflection, discussion, and celebration of favela resistance experiences. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ev\u00e2nio de Paula, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2SxloO8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vidigal<\/a> resident and president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3JrL1LL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon Sporting and Cultural Association<\/a>, felt a real connection in this space. He was looking at a panel on the timeline with a photo of an eviction in Vidigal, supposedly because of problems related to stabilizing the hill slopes; he said he was seven years old when this occurred <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/Vidigal45Years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 1977<\/a>. In his talk, he remembered the eviction resistance strategies he experienced in childhood.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAt that time, I was seven years old\u2026 and to avoid eviction, Dona Heneida Brasil, a community leader\u2026 took everyone from Rua Almirante Tamandar\u00e9 to Avenida Niemeyer. Children stayed in front of [the Military Police\u2019s] shock battalion to prevent police coming to take away families. A group of students stayed at the entrance to Vidigal. Photo: Alexandre Cerqueira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The residents association and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2l5fO9k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favelas Pastoral Committee<\/a> arranged for <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44Rb6fo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pope John Paul II to visit Vidigal<\/a> in 1980. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the middle of the amphitheater\u2014a legacy of Vila Aut\u00f3dromo residents\u2019 fight\u2014and with the timeline surrounding it, the exhibition included an art installation titled \u201cWell of Memories\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44wq7U4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ev\u00e2nia de Paula<\/a>, a visual artist from Vidigal. He brought a historical angle that runs through the entire exhibition and spoke of how his community is linked with all the other favelas where evictions took place.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAntares has a strong connection with all the communities where the circles were held. Over in Antares, we have families evicted from Mar\u00e9, mainly, and also from Vidigal, Rocinha, and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho\u2026 There are many families that couldn&#8217;t afford to stay in City of God and came to Antares because life was cheaper there. This movement of going to the circles and learning, even to a community 80 kilometers from downtown Rio de Janeiro, this act of coming to our origin is very difficult. And, although each area has its own history, we have so much in common, because many favelas were removed or had attempts at removal, and the justification used was the climate, rains, and landslides. Our histories are similar, so nothing could be more fitting than us getting together to discuss strategies. She spoke on the right to housing, her story of resistance, and how she fought not to be evicted from her community.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI understood what housing rights were, these much discussed rights, so pretty on paper, but that don\u2019t work for us poor people if we do not demand them\u2026 We are from favelas and need to be conscious of that\u2026 society is always telling us that we can\u2019t live here, that we have to be ashamed [of where we live]. It is exactly the opposite: each day that goes by, I am happier to be able to be here in the garage of my house, in my location\u2026 it isn\u2019t easy to go through evictions, it\u2019s painful, it\u2019s cruel. Performed by actors Nathalia Macena and Fernanda dos Santos from the Por um Triz collective, the hard-hitting play enacted times of anguish and hope for Maria da Penha\u2014Nathalia\u2019s mother\u2014in the fight against evictions in Vila Aut\u00f3dromo. It also marks the beginning of a new cycle of history being told by people in the favelas.
