Photo: Alexandre Cerqueira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/CursoSolarRFSNoROW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/em><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>On June 3, Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s Sustainable Favela Network (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jqEnGE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SFN<\/a>) launched a Mini-Course for Favela Solar Energy Ambassadors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37P09jP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Babil\u00f4nia<\/a> favela, in the city&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/318kJ9H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Zone<\/a>. The gathering brought together community organizers from the network to discuss and introduce the course&#8217;s theme: \u201cthe role of solar energy in realizing energy and climate justice,\u201d under the leadership of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ayaPr0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revolusolar<\/a>, a member of the SFN active in the field for eight years. Over subsequent weeks, the course united grassroots leaders from diverse communities online on Wednesdays, concluding with a final meeting on August 12 at the headquarters of the Association of Women with Attitude and Social Commitment (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HU5KZh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMAC<\/a>) in the Dique da Vila Alzira favela, in the neighboring municipality of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Zrt2vo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duque de Caxias<\/a>, in Greater Rio&#8217;s Baixada Fluminense. On this day, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/VideoReleaseAMAConROW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMAC had its own photovoltaic system installed<\/a>.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The online course consisted of ten lessons led by Revolusolar, that began its work in the Babil\u00f4nia favela in 2015. In the first in-person class, participants took an <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/RFSTourSolar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">educational tour of Babil\u00f4nia&#8217;s \u201cSolar Corridor<\/a>,\u201d guided by Dinei Medina. Afterwards, they explored the trail of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/481pfcl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paisagem Carioca Natural Municipal Park<\/a>, where they discussed the importance of solar energy for favelas, as well as its connection to sustainability in a broader context.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/RFSTourSolar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch the video<\/a> of Medina&#8217;s tour through Babil\u00f4nia&#8217;s Solar Corridor and the Paisagem Carioca Natural Municipal Park:<\/h4>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dGWlLToT61Y?si=Vir59ZqU_QejVgCs\" width=\"1030\" height=\"580\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After lunch, hosted by local partner Leme Baptist Church, course priorities were discussed during an active exchange among participants, all organizers from other favelas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The idea is for the classes to be conversational. Photo: Alexandre Cerqueira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting the following week, the remote lessons covered eight themes, engaging over 120 people, primarily community organizers from Rio, but also allies and leaders from other communities, including from different regions of the country. This allowed for a national perspective on community projects involving solar energy, with exchanges across various Brazilian regions that informed students so as to create their own solar proposals to be shared in the final class.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Solar energy has all the potential to succeed in our country. It depends on the good will of both government and utilities, because it&#8217;s not in their interest for the people to become energy independent. Let&#8217;s hope everything works out, so we can have solar energy in our communities, in the favelas, and in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46jShTd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>.&#8221; \u2014 Edize Maria Santos, Association of <\/span>Women with Attitude and Social Commitment <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(AMAC)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The introductory topics were covered (what is energy, its sources, and segments of the electricity sector), followed by a focus on the energy transition and the presentation of community organizers who are references in solar energy, both within the Sustainable Favela Network (Rio de Janeiro state and also from MAB (Minas Gerais state) the Good Living Cooperative (Para\u00edba state), Conjunto Paulo Freire (S\u00e3o Paulo), and Favela da Paz Institute (S\u00e3o Paulo). Finally, the theme of how to develop a solar energy project by favela community-based organizations was centered, with guidance on how participants can write their own solar energy proposal and seek sponsorship.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve had the opportunity to visit some places abroad. That&#8217;s when I really started thinking about these technologies, and my question was always: how come they have this cutting-edge technology there, but there&#8217;s no solar energy or <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3P5Sp1n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodigestion<\/a> in the low-income areas of S\u00e3o Paulo?&#8221; \u2014 F\u00e1bio Miranda, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3L8DMJG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela da Paz Institute<\/a>, South Zone of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2KVmAZH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Miranda suggested that everyone can study technologies around them and talked about his experience with the first distributed energy project within the state of S\u00e3o Paulo, in his community of Favela da Paz.<\/p>\n<p>The course included people of different age groups, which provided an intergenerational discussion on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/EEonROW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy inefficiency<\/a> in vulnerable territories. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth from the 2022 SFN course &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Ozmk1Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monitoring Water and Energy Justice in the Favelas<\/a>&#8221; participated, as well as veteran leaders from the four corners of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the course&#8217;s rich discussions were those exchanged by the students themselves. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3PoD5hD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One fact reported<\/a> by a local leader who was present in the virtual class is that approximately one million people in the Amazon are without electricity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;They install these hydroelectric plants in our city, in our communities, they destroy the rivers, they destroy the cultures, and they take away our sustainability, and even the people who are affected don&#8217;t have the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3zzgjtz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">right to electricity<\/a>. Here in our city, our riverside families don&#8217;t have electricity.&#8221; \u2014 Maria Francineide, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Z0QdwT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xingu Women&#8217;s Collective<\/a> (Altamira, Par\u00e1)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The tenth and final class was once again held in person, this time at the headquarters of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44DCXPX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMAC<\/a>, a community organization in Dique de Vila Alzira in Duque de Caxias, which works to support women victims of violence and families in the region. There, students presented their proposals for solar energy projects at the headquarters of their community-based organizations. Photo: Alexandre Cerqueira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the presentation of the projects in the final class, Lidiane Santos and Gabrielle Silva from favela NGO <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zukRUW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alfazendo<\/a>, a reference in socio-environmental education in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wwjhWi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of God<\/a>, described the importance of having solar energy on the premises of the actions they do in a local public school, naming the initiative &#8220;Eco Brilharte.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We thought of Eco Brilharte as a possibility\u2026 of implementing solar energy&#8230;&#8221; \u2014 Gabrielle Silva<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both pointed to the different initiatives of Alfazendo, and thus, the importance of solar energy for actions in City of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Sustainable development is a reality in favelas\u2014despite all the mechanisms employed by <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/32aHwqF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental racism<\/a> to cause deaths, illnesses and subhuman living conditions\u2014because community-based institutions weave networks to overcome these challenges. Carlos Gabriel Santos, from AMAC, emphasized that it is necessary &#8220;to show that this is not the future. This is reality!
