Photo: AF Rodrigues<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Ekjedi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/em><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>During the celebration of Brazil&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/45Yy707\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Folklore Day<\/a> 2023, we learned more about how the residents of Parada de Lucas, in Rio de Janeiro\u2019s North Zone, continue to breathe life into \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49oQdf0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bumba meu boi<\/a>,\u2019 a northeastern Brazilian, Black and indigenous folkloric expression, strongly tied to the saints associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3upEAEw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazil&#8217;s June Festivals<\/a>.<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8216;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46VXAc9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">matraca<\/a><\/em>&#8216; and the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49oWozI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pandeiro<\/a>&#8216; make the ground tremble&#8230; This heritage was left by our grandparents. Today, it is cultivated by us.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verses of this \u2018<em>toada<\/em>\u2019\u2014 song and harmony\u2014trace back to the ancestral traditions of \u2018bumba meu boi,\u2019 a typical cultural tradition of Maranh\u00e3o, a state in the Northeast of Brazil. However, even far away from Maranh\u00e3o, the \u2018<em>toadas de boi<\/em>\u2019 also resonate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s peripheries, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revived and sung by generations of northeastern migrants. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2T3XHym\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parada de Lucas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a>, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sontBQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumba-meu-boi Brilho de Lucas Folklore Association<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revives the memories of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40qijlQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a municipality in the interior of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44u1833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maranh\u00e3o<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Founded in the 1980s by the Silva Costa family and today supported by the Rosa Castro family and friends, they work together to keep this manifestation of Black, indigenous and northeastern folklore alive in the \u2018marvelous city.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76580\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Main-character-of-the-bumba-meu-boi-ceremony-Photo-AF-Rodrigues.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76580 size-full\" title=\"Main character of the \u2018bumba meu boi\u2019 ceremony. Photo: AF Rodrigues<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manifestation of the \u2018boi\u2019 (ox) is woven into a narrative that traces back to the history of the Brazilian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/1Lzfam3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slave-holding period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3QqtINJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most widespread legend<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Maranh\u00e3o, Mother Catirina, while pregnant, longed to eat the tongue of the most beautiful ox on the farm. In a bid to fulfill his wife&#8217;s craving, Father Francisco takes the ox into the woods, extracts its tongue and presents it to her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But soon after, Father Francisco is discovered by the foreman of the farm. He is then brought to the presence of the master, who threatens him with death unless the enslaved man can bring the ox back to life. To escape punishment, Father Francisco seeks the aid of <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40rfBfM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cazumb\u00e1s<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, indigenous friends and sorcerers, who perform a ritual around the animal, resurrecting it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some traditions, the forest dwellers breathe life back into the ox. In others, the son of Mother Catirina and Father Francisco is born with the ox&#8217;s tongue and implores his parents to approach the animal. He then blows on it, reviving the ox. The celebration is held to honor its resurrection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Bumba meu boi&#8217; celebrations in Maranh\u00e3o unfold almost any time of year. They begin on Easter Saturday, when groups embark on initial rehearsals, extending until mid-June for round rehearsals. On June 23, the eve of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FOOQZ6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saint John&#8217;s Day<\/a>, the oxen undergo baptism, seeking permission from the protector saint of the &#8216;<em>bumbas<\/em>&#8216; for the festivities. This Catholic ritual heralds the commencement of performances in the &#8216;<em>arrai\u00e1is<\/em>,&#8217; which are the peak of June festivities for Maranh\u00e3o&#8217;s folklore groups. Finally, from July to December, the oxen&#8217;s death rituals unfold, marking the conclusion of the &#8216;bumba meu boi&#8217; festive cycle.<\/p>\n<h3>A Rio de Janeiro <em>Toada<\/em>: The Bumba-Meu-Boi Brilho de Lucas Folklore Association<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u2018<em>toadas de boi<\/em>\u2019 found their way to the June Festivals of Parada de Lucas in Rio de Janeiro carried by a wave of Maranh\u00e3o migrants. The tale of Brilho de Lucas began in 1982 when the Silva Costa family and friends from their homeland gathered in a backyard to nostalgically revel in their cultural heritage. Without aspirations to form a large group, they crafted a modest 30cm-tall, handmade ox. A bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46ZnyLS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drumming<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a few <em>toadas<\/em> sung, and thus began the journey of the Bumba-Meu-Boi Brilho de Lucas Folklore Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It was more about getting friends and relatives together on weekends, with a tiny little ox, drumming on cans, buckets, and bottles; drinking beer and eating typical food. That was the initial reason. Then, in 1987, we decided to make an adult ox and take it to the streets, where the festival is still held today.&#8221; \u00a0\u2014 Orlando Silva, president of Brilho de Lucas<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group, consisting of members from the Silva Costa and Rosa Castro families and friends, starts the preparations in April to assemble the pieces for the St. John&#8217;s Day festivities. Without a centralized headquarters for storing materials, the association maintains them spread across the homes of its members and performers.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;During this period, we check to see how the costumes are holding up and try to salvage some pieces. Many are very old, some are donated, some are bought, and others are handmade by my aunt Helena and my cousin L\u00edvia.&#8221; \u00a0\u2014 Filipe Costa, artist and member of Brilho de Lucas<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival honoring St. John takes place annually on Rua Joaquim Rodrigues, in Parada de Lucas, featuring a comprehensive program to promote the appreciation of Brazilian popular culture. Since 2012, the event organized by Brilho de Lucas has become part of the official calendar of Rio de Janeiro festivities. Photo: AF Rodrigues<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, the festival featured performances by the following groups: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3P71to6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boi Daqui<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3siHZ7o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recife<\/a>; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3QUB1PJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imp\u00e9rio Carioca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3YQxuEd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aturi\u00e1 Carimb\u00f3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WaxQUH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bel\u00e9m<\/a> in the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Xd6ZrA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Par\u00e1<\/a>; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3YMJPsO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encanto Carioca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; Boi Orquestra; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3OLLXMP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coletivo As Tr\u00eas Marias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which plays <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/47l5eN1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tambor de Crioula<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another cultural expression of Maranh\u00e3o origin. Photo: AF Rodrigues<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Filipe Costa, the bumba meu boi festival is not just about spreading northeastern folklore in the southeast of the country; above all, it is a heartfelt effort to bring Maranh\u00e3o closer to the &#8216;Maranhenses&#8217; living in Rio, easing their homesickness.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like you unlock a memory&#8230; leaving a place where you were born and raised, venturing into a completely different one, trying to make a living like my family did when they came from Maranh\u00e3o [it&#8217;s heavy]&#8230; so [with the bumba meu boi] you feel at home, you feel a bit less homesick.&#8221; \u2014 Filipe Costa<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>The Musicality, Accent and Dance of the Brilho de Lucas Group<\/h3>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3PhmOv5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matracas<\/span><\/a><\/em> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(an instrument made of wood and a piece of iron), drums, <em>surdos<\/em> <em>marcadores<\/em> (large bass drums that hold the rhythm), <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3szHAx2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tarol<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a type of snare drum similar to the drums of samba schools, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3SvnleT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frevo<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Uj29rV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maracatu<\/a><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> orchestras) and whistles are some of the instruments that make up the musicality of the Brilho de Lucas folklore group. Hailing from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viana<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a municipality in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3SsB5a6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baixada Maranhense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brilho de Lucas&#8217;s &#8216;<em>sotaque de boi<\/em>&#8216; or its <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44vRZav\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accent<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44r9BnK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sotaque da Baixada<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as &#8216;<em>pandeir\u00e3o<\/em>.&#8217; This arrangement sets the rhythm so that the members can play and dance to the sound of the <em>toadas<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orlando Silva points out that, in addition to the Baixada accent, there are four other types of accents in the state of Maranh\u00e3o: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/45RZYzu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">orquestra accent<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/45Unv2Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">zabumba accent<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/45O3OJT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boi da ilha or matraca accent<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3OPCyE8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">costa de m\u00e3o accent<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to him, &#8220;each accent has its own sung <em>toadas<\/em>, which are played in a characteristic way.&#8221; In this manner, the combination of accent, attire and instruments of the performers makes each group unique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to dance and corporality, the Brilho de Lucas folklore group performs its choreography in a counter-clockwise direction. This configuration relates to indigenous ancestry, which played a crucial role in shaping the bumba meu boi.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Circularity is a way of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">honoring<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what is sacred to us. In the past, the indigenous people danced in circles to give thanks for the harvest. It&#8217;s a way of returning to the past.
