The video shares the perspectives of four interviewees: Edmilson Alves da Silva, Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o&#8217;s son; Luiz Carlos de Lima Junior, affectionately known in the favela as Bombeirinho; singer Xande de Pilares; and Vitor Bernardo, from the Macacos Vive media collective. Among them, there is a consensus that Jos\u00e9 Mendes da Silva &#8220;planted a seed of a tree that would only provide shade many years later, but he was sure that, in the future, someone would enjoy it.&#8221;<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA new (popular!) leader is being born<br \/>\nin the Pau da Bandeira favela.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leci Brand\u00e3o<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So proclaimed singer-songwriter <a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2W3n0j3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leci Brand\u00e3o<\/a>. The passage is from a samba released in 1985 about grassroots communicator Jos\u00e9 Mendes da Silva, forever known as <a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LCBoLq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o<\/a>, after whom the samba is named. The video report aims to recover memories not only from those who knew the Pernambuco native and Rio de Janeiro migrant in life but also from those familiar with his legacy. Letters would come in, he&#8217;d announce the names of people over the community radio and they&#8217;d come to pick them up at his little bar. He analyzes the potential of Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o&#8217;s legacy. Lima Junior emphasizes that da Silva was highly popular and respected in Vila Isabel, as well as being one of the pioneers of favela media, even during the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2NLDuds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">military dictatorship<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHe possessed amazing collective initiative. He lived at a time when things were censored but he spoke up anyway, breaking away from all that censorship stuff&#8230; There used to be this soap opera moment [when everyone stopped to watch the soap on TV]. And that&#8217;s when Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o would shine [on the loudspeaker]: raising awareness about prices at the supermarket, at the street market.\u201d \u2014 Luiz Carlos de Lima Junior, Bombeirinho<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This engaged profile of da Silva, as narrated by Bombeirinho, is also imprinted in the Brazilian social imaginary through Leci Brand\u00e3o&#8217;s hit samba:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o works,<br \/>\nAnd Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o struggles,<br \/>\nAnd hollers about food prices.<br \/>\nAnd when Brazilian TV<br \/>\nNumbs everyone with its soap opera<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s when Z\u00e9 blows the whistle<br \/>\nDelivering a heartfelt speech<br \/>\nAll for the good of the favela!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leci Brand\u00e3o<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gentleman with a cap and red polo shirt shares an analogy about planting a tree when remembering Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o: <\/span>\u201cHe planted the seed of a tree that would only provide shade many years later but he was sure that, in the future, someone would enjoy it.&#8221; For Bombeirinho, it is evident that da Silva&#8217;s work remains alive, especially through community initiatives, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46uJZI1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macacos Vive<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an independent media collective.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76721\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76721\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Vitor-Bernardo-founder-of-the-Macacos-Vive-collective.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76721\" title=\"Vitor Bernardo, founder of the Macacos Vive collective.\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Vitor-Bernardo-founder-of-the-Macacos-Vive-collective.png\" alt=\"Vitor Bernardo, founder of the Macacos Vive collective.\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vitor Bernardo, founder of the Macacos Vive collective.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitor Bernardo, 30, founder of the Macacos Vive media collective, never had any contact with Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o. But decades later, the collective also emerges as independent grassroots media in the same area, sharing the same goal as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">da Silva: to inform the favela. As a lawyer and native of Morro dos Macacos, Bernardo believes that community-led media help disseminate information on the rights of residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c[Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o] was a natural leader&#8230; He could accomplish things that were uncommon in many favelas. A pioneer of community radio&#8230; We&#8217;re talking decades ago, when cell phones weren&#8217;t around. And, in his way, he managed to disseminate information within the favela that the community didn&#8217;t have access to. He didn&#8217;t have Instagram, he didn&#8217;t have Facebook: he had a loudspeaker on top of the favela, shouting to everyone what the community needed to hear&#8230; Z\u00e9 do Caro\u00e7o was ahead of his time.\u201d \u2014 Vitor Bernardo<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also featured in the the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/ZeDoCarocoROW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video report<\/a>\u00a0is <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LFO8Rl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xande de Pilares<\/a>, 53, a former member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LFQwrv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grupo Revela\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a> samba group. The singer, born and raised in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3tgWNUa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morro da Chacrinha<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/33Fp2Jx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Turano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2TRbJCw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tijuca<\/a>, shares the story of the night he met da Silva.
