For Brazilian Black Awareness Month<\/a>, this article covered Rio de Janeiro\u2019s Urban Peripheries Literary Festival (FLUP<\/a>) on pioneering Afro-Brazilian authors\u2014the Black elders of Brazilian literature: Machado de Assis, Lima Barreto, and M\u00e3e Beata de Iemanj\u00e1. FLUP held its 13th edition throughout 2023, in various phases of cultural occupation that took over Rio de Janeiro’s Little Africa<\/a>. The opening was held on May 13<\/a>, Day of the Black Elders and the Abolition of Slavery, celebrating ancestral orality under the theme <\/span>\u201cWorld of the word, word of the world.\u201d The <\/span>most recent events occupied the city’s\u00a0Port Region<\/a> from October 12-15 and 18-22. This year, FLUP unfolded across various spaces in Little Africa, such as Cais do Valongo<\/a>, the largest port-of-entry to enslaved peoples in world history, Samol Arena, on Livramento Hill (a stone’s throw from Machado de Assis’s birthplace), the Gamboa Olympic Village, the \u201cA\u00e7\u00e3o da Cidadania\u201d warehouse, and the \u201cVia\u00e7\u00e3o Reginas\u201d parking lot at the foot of Morro da Provid\u00eancia, the first community to be called “favela”.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

In this edition, FLUP pays tribute to the ancestral knowledge of the <\/span>pretas and pretos velhos <\/span><\/i>(Afro-Brazilian elders). Above all, to native of <\/span>Livramento Hill<\/a>, founder of the Brazilian Academy of Letters<\/a> and Brazilian literature great Machado de Assis<\/a> under the motto \u201cMachado is Cria<\/em><\/a><\/span>!\u201d\u2014a term used today with pride by favela residents to indicate they were born and raised in the favela. Lima Barreto<\/a> and M\u00e3e Beata de Iemanj\u00e1<\/a> were also celebrated, the latter being an important author, religious and community leader whose actions were guided by environmental conservation, advocacy for human rights, and fighting sexism and racism.<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 13, during the first phase of FLUP 2023, with around 3000 attendees, incarnated pretas and pretos velhos<\/em><\/a> set the stage for what was to come<\/span>, among them: Gilberto Gil<\/a>, Haroldo Costa<\/a>, M\u00e3e Gl\u00f3ria de Iemanj\u00e1, Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Evaristo<\/a>, N\u00eago Bispo<\/a>, and Dona Z\u00e9lia do Prato<\/a>. High-level discussions were facilitated by important Brazilian Black women intellectuals, such as Fl\u00e1via Oliveira<\/a> and Eliana Alves Cruz<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The slogan \u201cJoin the circle, <\/span>cria<\/span><\/i>!\u201d aimed to unify Afro-Indigenous ancestry, the literature and diversity of favelas and urban peripheries of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the world. The motto serves as an invitation, in good<\/span> pretugu\u00eas<\/span><\/i><\/a> (“Black Portuguese”),<\/span><\/i> to those who want to celebrate our ancestors and elders in the literary terreiro<\/em><\/a> <\/span>(Afro-Brazilian religious grounds)<\/span> of Little Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n
