FLUP held its 13th edition throughout 2023, in various phases of cultural occupation that took over Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ZGrQDm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little Africa<\/a>. The opening was held on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40ADJN0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 13<\/a>, Day of the Black Elders and the Abolition of Slavery, celebrating ancestral orality under the theme <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWorld of the word, word of the world.\u201d The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most recent events occupied the city&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3yg2rDk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Port Region<\/a> from October 12-15 and 18-22. Photo: FLUP\u2019s social media<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this edition, FLUP pays tribute to the ancestral knowledge of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pretas and pretos velhos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Afro-Brazilian elders). Above all, to native of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40CDj92\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Livramento Hill<\/a>, founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/47Pm9Yn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazilian Academy of Letters<\/a> and Brazilian literature great <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/47JrP6f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Machado de Assis<\/a> under the motto \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49t0fvF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Machado is <em>Cria<\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u201d\u2014a term used today with pride by favela residents to indicate they were born and raised in the favela. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3HcWXOj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lima Barreto<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Msegzt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00e3e Beata de Iemanj\u00e1<\/a> were also celebrated, the latter being an important author, religious and community leader whose actions were guided by environmental conservation, advocacy for human rights, and fighting sexism and racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 13, during the first phase of FLUP 2023, with around 3000 attendees, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4736IM1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incarnated <em>pretas and pretos velhos<\/em><\/a> set the stage for what was to come<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among them: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3swZpgv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gilberto Gil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FXPNOZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haroldo Costa<\/a>, M\u00e3e Gl\u00f3ria de Iemanj\u00e1, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2B8pneQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Evaristo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/47u0xjS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N\u00eago Bispo<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3swZG31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dona Z\u00e9lia do Prato<\/a>. High-level discussions were facilitated by important Brazilian Black women intellectuals, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3QW69hw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fl\u00e1via Oliveira<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3QZ7CDR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eliana Alves Cruz<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The slogan \u201cJoin the circle, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u201d aimed to unify Afro-Indigenous ancestry, the literature and diversity of favelas and urban peripheries of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the world. Machado, a revolutionary who witnessed the end of slavery, used his writing to challenge oppression with ironic realism.<\/p>\n<p>In 1897, he co-founded the Brazilian Academy of Letters, the same institution that only saw another Black member in the 21st century. On May 13, FLUP 2023 honors the greatest Black writer ever, our very own Machado, with 13 hours of music, literature, Ax\u00e9, and feijoada. We&#8217;ll name the reading room at Arena Samol the Machado de Assis Room, spreading his words to the children of Livramento Hill. This article will focus on three specific events: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Mo9CCy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children\u2019s FLUP<\/a>, the lecture series \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3SsbNJ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Peripheries: From the Margin to the Center of the World<\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49nhhLk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Brazil of Quotas and UERJ&#8217;s Pioneering with 20 years of Affirmative Action Policies<\/a>.\u201d These discussions addressed themes celebrating achievements of the Black Movement, including 20 years of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/39N5t73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UERJ<\/a>\u2019s affirmative action policies and how these have also benefitted indigenous people, economically vulnerable individuals, and public schools students. October is promising! &#x1f4a5;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Global Peripheries<\/h3>\n<p>On October 16, within the Global Peripheries lecture series, a roundtable titled \u201cFavela Hill: The Provid\u00eancia of Canudos\u201d brought together key figures including photographer and Provid\u00eancia <em>cria<\/em>, Maur\u00edcio Hora; Jo\u00e3o Batista S. Lima, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3TcCrX0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canudos<\/a> <em>cria<\/em>, historian, and descendant of <em>conselheristas<\/em> (followers of Ant\u00f4nio Conselheiro, leader of the Canudos revolt); Luiz Torres, teacher, quilombola, and Provid\u00eancia <em>cria<\/em>; and S\u00edlvia Capanema, teacher and researcher. During the presentations, their discussions delved into the direct relationship between Canudos and Morro da Provid\u00eancia.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Consider this\u2014100 years after the Canudos War (1898), a contact from <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49sp6iT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNEB<\/a> (State University of Bahia) reached out, urging me to visit Canudos saying ruins were emerging. They built a dam to conceal the remnants of the war. By 1968, the dam was completed&#8230; and engineers anticipated it would fill in three to four years. To everyone&#8217;s surprise, it filled up in three days, overflowing on the fourth. So, a century later, as the dam dried up, the entire city resurfaced. It&#8217;s almost divine! It will be remembered once again in a song of love, justice and peace, and all united in one same direction will proclaim, never again war. The sert\u00e3o is a sea of dreams, hope and redemption. The caatinga fills life with enchantment.&#8221; <\/span>\u2014 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jo\u00e3o Batista<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still as part of the Global Peripheries lecture series, the October 19 panel, titled \u201cSpoken Languages, Spoken Worlds\u201d featured the participation of rapper, poet and composer <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3R2waMc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carol Dall Farra<\/a>; <em>cordelista<\/em> (a practitioner of a Brazilian folk literary form called &#8216;cordel&#8217;), poet and actor Edmilson Santini; writer and poet Mauricio Acu\u00f1a; and writer Natalia Ospina. The discussion delved into various forms of language, art and culture across global peripheries. Edmilson Santini told his story using <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3GtMAqy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cordel techniques<\/a> at various moments, reflecting on the significance of his origins in shaping who he is today.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was raised in a circle of &#8216;cordel&#8217; storytelling. My grandfather was called the &#8216;paj\u00e9 do sert\u00e3o&#8217;; he lived on a farm on the border of Alagoas with Pernambuco, in a place called Canapi. The panel featured indigenous leaders Cacique <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46hhk90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcos Xukuru<\/a>, Tayn\u00e1 \u00c1lvares (a UERJ student), and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46hhk90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wallace Amaral<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUERJ was a pioneer in the affirmative action system.
