Photo: National Archives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org.br\/?p=73390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><i><strong>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/strong><\/i><\/em><em><i><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23766 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/i><\/em><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>Rio de Janeiro\u2019s Urban Peripheries Literary Festival (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flup.net.br\/\">FLUP<\/a>) kicked off its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flup.net.br\/abertura\">14th edition<\/a> on Saturday, May 11 with an event held at <a href=\"https:\/\/circocrescereviver.org.br\/conheca\/\">Circo Crescer e Viver<\/a>, in the area now known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cidade_Nova,_Rio_de_Janeiro\">Cidade Nova<\/a>. Formerly recognized as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pra%C3%A7a_Onze\">Pra\u00e7a XI<\/a>, the region stands as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/diariodorio.com\/historia-da-praca-onze\">cradles of Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s samba culture<\/a>, home and <em>terreiro <\/em>[sacred space of Afro-Brazilian worship] of critical women like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afroriowalkingtour.com\/exhibits\/show\/afro-brazilian-women\/tia-ciata\">Tia Ciata<\/a>, in the heart of <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=centro\">downtown<\/a>. The festival&#8217;s 2024 program promises to be rich and diverse, offering courses and workshops from June to August. This edition&#8217;s honoree is the intellectual from Sergipe: historian, pioneer of the Brazilian Black movement, poet, and filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6M0oI5J1Cq\/\">Beatriz Nascimento<\/a>.<\/h4>\n<h3>Visibility to Black and Peripheral Narratives: Beatriz Nascimento and the Quilombos<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Umbanda#:~:text=The%20gira%20is,it.%5B212%5D\"><em>gira<\/em><\/a> [a sacred space in Afro-Brazilian religions\u2014a circle of mediums, drums, and practitioners which invokes spiritual entities], the circle and circularity are ancestral movements that express the essence of African and Afro-Brazilian civilizational values. These deeply meaningful expressions were chanted during the 14th edition of the event, and present insurgent voices to the reality of the Brazilian publishing market. Brazilian writers are <a href=\"https:\/\/iberical.sorbonne-universite.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/002-02.pdf\">93.9% white<\/a>, occupying the privileged positions and professions in the production of discourse: the fields of journalism and academia.<\/p>\n<p>FLUP aims to challenge this hegemony within the Brazilian literary scene, promoting access to books and literary writings, debates, and the visibility of Black, favela, and peripheral intellectuals who have <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=62894\">been historically silenced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Beatriz Nascimento - &quot;a hist\u00f3ria do Brasil \u00e9 uma hist\u00f3ria escrita por m\u00e3os brancas&quot;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-LhM1MaPE9c\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At FLUP, writer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concei%C3%A7%C3%A3o_Evaristo\">Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Evaristo<\/a> highlighted the festival&#8217;s great potential in democratizing access to literature and <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=69101\">spreading the legacy of Black intellectuals<\/a>, such as Beatriz Nascimento. Evaristo also emphasized the thinker&#8217;s importance for historiographical studies from a Black perspective.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBeatriz Nascimento was a historian from beginning to end.\u201d \u2014 Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Evaristo<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The historian revolutionized studies on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.revistas.uneb.br\/index.php\/asipc\/article\/view\/7643\">contemporary quilombos<\/a>, investigating them as units of Black protest and resistance. This thesis, previously presented by the Black intellectual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/cebape\/a\/z8qmLPbdwBFKgxN9nT6gQ7N\/?format=pdf&amp;lang=en#:~:text=Cl%C3%B3vis%20Steiger%20de%20Assis%20Moura,in%20understanding%20the%20country's%20formation.\">Cl\u00f3vis Steiger de Assis Moura<\/a> in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com.br\/Quilombos-Resist%C3%AAncia-Escravismo-Cl%C3%B3vis-Moura\/dp\/6558910012\/ref=asc_df_6558910012\/?tag=googleshopp00-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=379787783723&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=2235290022150643146&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=1001655&amp;hvtargid=pla-1184582314260&amp;psc=1&amp;mcid=2ccf3e8343b5363ea1adee6185247fa0\"><em>Quilombos: Resistance to Slavery<\/em><\/a>, was updated by Nascimento, who drew parallels with the quintessential spaces of contemporary Black Brazilian culture: <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=66215\">favelas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaihs.org\/rios-carnival-quilombo\/\">carnival communities<\/a>, and centers of <a href=\"https:\/\/rpl.hds.harvard.edu\/faq\/african-derived-religions-brazil#:~:text=African%2Dderived%20religions%20in%20Brazil%20include%2C%20most%20prominently%2C%20Candombl%C3%A9,identities%2C%20both%20historically%20and%20today.\">Afro-Brazilian religious worship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78262\" style=\"width: 1170px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Beatriz-Nascimento-historian-and-pioneer-of-the-Black-movement-in-Brazil-Photo-Educacao-e-Territorio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-78262 size-full\" title=\"Beatriz Nascimento, historian and pioneer of the Black movement in Brazil. Photo:<em> Educa\u00e7\u00e3o e Territ\u00f3rio<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1977, early in her career, during the <a href=\"https:\/\/conexao.ufrj.br\/2021\/03\/a-atualidade-da-intelectual-transatlantica\/\">Black Fortnight<\/a> at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (<a href=\"https:\/\/www5.usp.br\/\">USP<\/a>), Nascimento laid out a few foundations of her hypothesis of the quilombo being ancestral strategy of resistance:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThus, from this moment on, the use of the term &#8216;quilombo&#8217; will take on a basically ideological and essentially doctrinal connotation in the sense of gathering, in the sense of community, in the sense of struggle\u2014recognizing men, recognizing people who should truly fight for better living conditions. They are part of this society and should fight for their rightful place.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The founding director of FLUP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/julioludemir\/?hl=en\">Julio Ludemir<\/a>, emphasized the importance of the writer&#8217;s thought for historiography from a Black perspective:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe word &#8216;quilombo&#8217; did not exist as a symbol of strategy and survival intelligence. We want her work to be increasingly known, read, published; to reach even further.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 1989, the author also produced the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=677188599155700&amp;_rdc=1&amp;_rdr\"><em>\u00d4r\u00ed<\/em><\/a>, which, from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radicalphilosophy.com\/commentary\/amefricanity#:~:text=The%20Amefricanity%20category,conceptualisations%20of%20blackness.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amefrican perspective<\/a>, can mean &#8216;head,&#8217; both physical and internal. This head guides, references, directs, gathers intellect, memory, and thought, bringing together present, past, and future, and can take on the political meaning of Black consciousness. \u00d4r\u00ed is not merely the concrete head above the neck but the spiritual head, representing the deeper &#8216;self.&#8217; <em>\u00d4r\u00ed<\/em> was directed by Raquel Berger, with research, screenplay, and narration by Beatriz Nascimento.<\/p>\n<p>In this work, Nascimento places the quilombo at the center of Black existence. She recounts the history of Black movements between 1977 and 1988 to outline a social, political, and cultural panorama of the country, seeking an identity and highlighting the importance of quilombos in shaping a national identity.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1uRJjQpJzd_EgFdYROd3dxPqxDdp74R8c\/preview\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Following an <a href=\"https:\/\/thirdworldpressfoundation.org\/products\/african-centered-education\">Afro-Brazilian-centered perspective<\/a>, adopted by the thinker, FLUP organized panels and activities on literature and racial issues. Family members and friends of the intellectual attended the event, moved by the tribute.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cShe planted this seed in me when I was just a child. Photo: Press Release<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This program brought together <em>Yalorix\u00e1<\/em> (Candombl\u00e9 Priestess) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/maemarciamarcal\">M\u00e1rcia Mar\u00e7al<\/a>, writer and matriarch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1142152725932844\">Il\u00ea As\u00e9 D\u2019Oluaiy\u00e8 Ny Oy\u00e1<\/a>, Mother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/maeflaviapinto\">Fl\u00e1via da Silva Pinto<\/a>, sociologist, writer, and matriarch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/casadoperdao\/\">Casa do Perd\u00e3o<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nataraney\">Natara Ney<\/a>, a filmmaker from Pernambuco state who also serves as a curator of FLUP. The panel&#8217;s goal was to address <a href=\"https:\/\/unglobalcompact.org\/take-action\/action\/womens-principles\">women&#8217;s empowerment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=64058\">religious racism<\/a>, and education and literature in <em>terreiros\u2014<\/em>the sacred spaces of Afro-Brazilian worship.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI will pay tribute to the two Beatrizes that FLUP chose to honor. Last year, Beatriz Moreira Costa (Mother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flup.net.br\/homenagens-2023\">Beata de Iemanj\u00e1<\/a>), now an ancestor, and this year, Beatriz Nascimento. Both were committed to fighting religious intolerance and promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/theblackcurriculum.com\/blog\/blog-post-title-three-dxgps\">racial literacy<\/a>. Beatriz Nascimento, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/abpnrevista.org.br\/site\/article\/download\/1087\/1019\">L\u00e9lia Gonzalez<\/a>, turned to Africa to understand history, because part of religious racism stems from an untold memory.\u201d \u2014 Fl\u00e1via Pinto<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the same vein, M\u00e1rcia Mar\u00e7al continued the discussion on religious racism in Brazil.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cReligious intolerance happens because it is a Black religion. Everything that comes from Black people is spoken ill of and looked down upon. Others always think it&#8217;s for doing evil. Mar\u00e7al commented on the importance of children from <em>terreiros<\/em> having access to books.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen I created the literary space in the <em>terreiro<\/em>, things just kind of unfolded from there. With the life I had, I left school very early, but I always wanted to learn. And the <em>orix\u00e1s<\/em> started giving me children who were educated, so I learned. On payday, I collected Beatriz&#8217;s honorarium and arranged to meet her at the Amarelinho [bar]. Eventually, it closed [for the day]. We headed towards Botafogo, since she [Beatriz] lived in Urca, and we spent her entire payment along the way. By the time we reached Botafogo, we didn&#8217;t have any money left to get back. So, we sat on the sidewalk in front of Canec\u00e3o [entertainment venue], and Beatriz suggested, &#8216;Let&#8217;s wait for the day to break,&#8217; and we spent the night there. The 50 selected participants will write stories based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ocandomble.com\/2011\/11\/28\/o-principio-e-o-fim\/\"><em>itans<\/em><\/a>, mythical narratives involving these important protagonists of Afro-Brazilian cosmology.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur culture&#8217;s resistance is found in the terreiros: [in] mothers who nourish, tell stories, and take care of their children. [It&#8217;s our] &#8216;or\u00ed&#8217;-entation. This formative process contains the beauty of encounters, storytelling, and oral traditions. I believe that each visit will provide us with unique teachings, not only for our writing but for our lives.\u201d \u2014 Natara Ney<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>FLUP will initiate another training program in June, the Quilombo Slam, echoing the work of Beatriz Nascimento and dedicated to the memory of the quilombola intellectual <a href=\"https:\/\/agitatejournal.org\/remembering-antonio-bispo-dos-santos\/\">N\u00eago Bispo<\/a>, who passed away in 2023. Ten quilombos from ten different Brazilian states will participate, hosting slammers\u2014performance poets who engage in spoken word poetry slams (battles). These slammers will lead workshops in poetry and performance in the quilombos. Each quilombo will host a local slam, and the winners from each state will travel to Rio de Janeiro for the grand final in November.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, in August, the eighth edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/prosas.com.br\/editais\/13613-lanani-2023\">Black and Indigenous Narratives Laboratory for Audiovisual \u2014 Lanani<\/a> will be launched. The partnership with Globo TV has trained over 200 screenwriters over the past seven years. There will be three months of training with two weekly meetings, one for classes on narrative formats and audiovisual script structures and another for mentoring sessions to discuss participants&#8217; individual projects. The goal is to produce a pitch for audiovisual content\u2014films, series, or soap operas.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, as proposed by Beatriz Nascimento, <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=69423\"><em>aquilombar<\/em> is necessary<\/a> to preserve Black and indigenous memory and ancestry. In this sense, through workshops and events, FLUP becomes a powerful channel for the circulation of this knowledge and wisdom in Brazilian society.
