Photo: Luiza de Andrade<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/463sFvc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/em><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>The Favela Climate Memory Exhibition, organized by museums and memory projects associated with the Sustainable Favela Network (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3nsyde6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SFN<\/a>)*, was on display from May 6-June 4 at the Favela Museum (<a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=museu-de-favela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MUF<\/a>) in <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=Pav%C3%A3o-Pav%C3%A3ozinho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=Cantagalo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cantagalo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=south-zone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Zone<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition was part of the program honoring Brazil&#8217;s 22nd Annual National Museum Week. MUF\u2019s primary events for National Museum Week began on May 13 with both museum staff and visitors present for the Climate Memory Exhibition. They also had the opportunity to watch the play \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6tvGNwO_D4\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rocking Chair<\/a>,\u201d presented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/coletivoreverbere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reverbere Collective<\/a> and directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dudu_gehlen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dudu Gehlen<\/a>. This touching play delves into the memories of a deceased family member.<\/h4>\n<p>The Favela Climate Memory exhibition arose as the final product of five <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=series-favela-climate-memory\">favela climate memory circles<\/a> held in 2023 by the following community museums: <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=75090\">Mar\u00e9 Museum<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=complexo-da-mare\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=75276\">Sankofa Museum<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=rocinha\">Rocinha<\/a>, Historic Orientation and Research Nucleus of Santa Cruz (<a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=75311\">NOPH<\/a>) in <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=antares\">Antares<\/a>, the Favela Museum (<a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=75462\">MUF<\/a>) in Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho and Cantagalo, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=75117\">Vidigal Memories Nucleus<\/a>. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.favelasustentavel.org\/memoria-climatica\">exhibition consists<\/a> of accounts and memories about climate, narrated from the perspective of residents of five Rio favelas and displayed in video form, through banners, a timeline, and using an interactive map, making it possible to witness memories that make up the history of the participating favelas. The exhibition also includes a map of museums and memory projects from the Sustainable Favela Network. There is also the art installation \u201cWell of Memories\u201d designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?tag=Vidigal\">Vidigal<\/a> artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/belasartesevania\/?originalSubdomain=br\">Ev\u00e2nia de Paula<\/a>. The \u201cWell of Memories\u201d contains approximately 100 photographs in an interactive installation for visitors. At the opening remarks, M\u00e1rcia Souza, one of the founders of MUF\u2014which celebrated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museudefavela.org\/2023\/11\/27\/muf-comemora-seus-15-anos-e-lanca-no-territorio-o-plano-integrado-de-saude-nas-favelas-do-rio-de-janeiro\/\">15-year anniversary<\/a>\u2014spoke about the exhibition and then invited all visitors to watch the \u201cRocking Chair\u201d theater play.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy name is M\u00e1rcia, and I am one of the founders of the Favela Museum. We are welcoming this project [here,] the play \u2018Rocking Chair,\u2019 which is a very special moment for me\u2026 The museum is open to everyone and the Favela Climate Memory exhibition is taking place now. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The play \u201cRocking Chair,\u201d performed by actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dudu_gehlen\/\">Dudu Gehlen<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/coletivoreverbere\/\">Reverbere Collective<\/a>, explores the relationship between time and death as an attempt to materialize affection and reconstruct someone who has already passed away. We spoke with Gehlen, an actor from the state of Maranh\u00e3o, about the significance of presenting the play at the opening of an exhibition about climate memories, considering its focus on emotional and tender events.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe piece we put on at the Favela Museum is called Rocking Chair. It was very important to bring it to a museum space, especially during Museum Week, because this piece is all about preserving memories. We are constantly working to document the existence of the women in my family, especially Dona Ca\u00e7ula, who is my great-grandmother. Souza elaborated on the process of participating in the circles that generated the exhibition and emphasized the significance of its returning to the favela, allowing residents and visitors to learn about the outcomes of this collaborative effort.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI participated in the whole process of forming ideas for the [climate memory] discussion circles. Seeing the first stage completed and receiving the resulting exhibition here is really significant. The residents sharing their thoughts, looking at each other, and also being able to see that this is not just happening here, that there are other places facing very similar problems: they find this identification with one another. Because we often think that these things only happen here, that only we have been abandoned, that only we go through this&#8230; And then, [having] exchanges and solutions, to be able to say &#8216;look over there, they solved it in this way, here [we solved it] another way&#8217;. This exchange is very important. And, in a sense, it was to house this creation, that [I] participated, that I was able to contribute to this creation.\u201d \u2014 M\u00e1rcia Souza, co-founder of the Favela Museum<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The exhibition was held in the Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho and Cantagalo favelas during <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1hhY5WZ5O2BQmeIRu4bVfr9VGPZMLpxHU\/view\">Brazil&#8217;s 22nd National Museum Week<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/museus\/pt-br\/assuntos\/noticias\/ibram-divulga-o-tema-da-22a-semana-nacional-de-museus\">SNM<\/a>), which had a theme of \u201cMuseums, Education and Research,\u201d with over 1,087 institutions participating across the country in celebration of International Museum Day (May 18). Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MUF&#8217;s participation in Museum Week with the Favela Climate Memory exhibition and its various accompanying activities such as workshops, plays, guided tours, <em>soirees<\/em>, and the study circle \u201cThe MUF Way of Making a Museum\u201d aims to contribute to the preservation of the memory of Rio&#8217;s favelas.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition was held at MUF until June 4, when it was transferred to the Center for Studies and Solidarity Actions of Mar\u00e9 (CEASM), in the North Zone favelas of Mar\u00e9, where it will be showcased throughout the month of June as part of the curriculum for the community&#8217;s youth.
