In this project, the favela is not associated with misery or scarcity, but is a place of abundance: abundant imagination, invention, study and practice.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Creativity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Irm\u00e3 F\u00e1tima and the children of Tabajaras have learned to see disposable materials in different ways. Together they transform plastic bottles into toys. \u201cThis one looks like a fish,\u201d says one of her students. \u201cIt\u2019s magnificent the way children look at things,\u201d says F\u00e1tima.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4584\" title=\"Elio Beiriz's peanut grinder\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Triturador-de-amendoim.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It takes a combination of imagination and ingenuity to perceive a world beyond the obvious. This is why you can always find a bit of a child&#8217;s spirit in the creativity of an adult.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sustainability\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A trendy word, sustainability is more deeply present in Elio Beiriz\u2019s life than it was in the Rio+20 resolutions. Resident of the Morro dos Macacos community, Elio was looking for ways to make money using materials he already had. That\u2019s how he came up with the peanut grinder, among other creations, made from an exercise bicycle and a meat grinder.<\/p>\n<p>Elio says his story illustrates the expression, \u201cnecessity makes the frog jump.\u201d But the inventor also needed some knowledge to execute his projects. \u201cI didn\u2019t study much at school, but I read a lot. Science and technology books,\u201d he states. What wound up being important was the combination of necessity and knowledge, and getting his hands dirty. \u201cWorking teaches you to work,\u201d he declares.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Art<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4588\" title=\"Benedito the Clown\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Palhaco-Benedito.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Only art and love make our existence tolerable, said the English writer W. Somerset Maugham. When Edilson Benedito divorced his wife, he saw that his nine-year old son was suffering from the separation.\u00a0Edilson decided to cheer him up, along with the other children in the community, by dressing up as a clown. Today\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/naturanacomunidade.com.br\/edilsom-benedito-minha-acao-tem-por-objetivo-trazer-mais-alegria-educacao-equilibrio-arte-e-conscientizacao-ambiental-as-criancas-e-jovens-do-santa-marta-atraves-de-oficinas-de-reciclagem-de-eve\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>O Palha<\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/VO7gtv\" target=\"_blank\">\u00e7o Benedito<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Benedito the Clown) is well known in Santa Marta, and he\u2019s also a recycling artist.<\/p>\n<p>The clown\u2019s irreverence is easy to spot in his creations. His \u201cblessed\u201d art includes flowerpots made from unusual objects&#8211;a shoe, a stereo, a soccer ball.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4585\" title=\"rola rola\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/rola-rola.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Design<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite the air of sophistication of the word \u201cdesign,\u201d you don\u2019t have to go far to find it. According to the curator of the exhibit, \u201cDesign also has a broader and more informal origin. It has always existed in the most basic relationships between humans and their environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>None of the objects on display better represents this concept than the \u201c<em>rola<\/em>\u201d (roll) or \u201c<em>rola-rola<\/em>\u201d (roll-roll). This anonymous creation consists of a barrel with tires around it, used to transport water from one place to another. \u201cPeople used to carry buckets of water with a scale, or on their heads. The\u00a0<em>rola<\/em>\u00a0benefitted everyone,\u201d says Marilene, from the community of Mar\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Design is where you least expect it. That\u2019s the opinion of Tio Lino, creator of the project \u201c<em>O Mundo da Arte<\/em>\u201d (The World of Art) in the Rocinha community. \u201cIn the morning, take a look at the bread you\u2019re going to eat. That\u2019s design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFavela Design\u201d runs through December 20, Monday through Saturday 10am\u20137pm.
