For more information and updates, follow their Instagram page.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uN2eYh\">Brazil\u2019s oldest favela<\/a>, founded in 1897, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2JpV3OV\">Morro da Provid\u00eancia<\/a>, a remarkable initiative has been transforming lives and landscapes: Agroecological Provid\u00eancia, founded in 2013 by duo Alessandra Roque and Lorena Portela. A project rooted in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4fyxi4u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agroecology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2TK9CRw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental education<\/a>, and community health and well-being, it is coordinated by local women and addresses the pressing issues of food security, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion in an urban area often neglected by public services. Photo: Social Media<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Agroecological Provid\u00eancia&#8217;s Birth and Growth<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alessandra Roque, Lorena Portela, and Elisangela Almeida founded Agroecological Provid\u00eancia to strengthen the community&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4dLnNNF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sense of belonging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in 2013, addressing urban planning challenges linked to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3RTlvBG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rio 2016 Olympics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The government and real estate developers failed to fulfill their social and environmental commitments to the area, prompting residents to take action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For example, during the Rio Olympics, the Olympic Committee donated <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4c9yUyy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12,000 seeds<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3WP8iyy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reforestation<\/a>. Meanwhile, in Provid\u00eancia, two local women took it upon themselves to plant an impressive 14,000 seeds to restore a deforested area of the community, according to Roque.<\/p>\n<p>Her vision of self-management rooted in ecology is a response to the absence of basic services, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Tq9YNn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46vDNkc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electricity<\/a>. Initially, the area where Roque lives was being used as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46PbZpI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste dump<\/a>. Gradually, she began to clean up and transform the area into a space for community use, drawing on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/46uFNZW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ancestral technologies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3rpCQWx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life strategies<\/a> from the favela. Since then, alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HE9cbG\">Intelligent Garden<\/a>, which was initially led by other women in the community, these projects evolved into what they are today: one organization centered on education and focused on community health, environmental recovery and revitalization through practices that adapt ecological knowledge from indigenous cultures and the African diaspora to the realities of the favelas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LN6LCP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lorena Portela<\/a>, who was already involved with Intelligent Garden, has been co-leading Agroecological Provid\u00eancia alongside Roque since the two initiatives merged.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe&#8217;re an agroecology project focused on education and health. Photo: Social Media<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the context of the many <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XB2ywt\">vulnerabilities faced in a favela<\/a>, where <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4dubaWK\">access to land<\/a>, leisure, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3KQMZGc\">nature<\/a> is often restricted, promoting a connection with the environment and its essential resources for care and nourishment is crucial.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe try to address the structural challenges and pitfalls of public education&#8230; and [also] a widespread disconnect in society [regarding] land and nature, particularly in the urban environment.\u201d \u2014 Lorena Portela<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, the group seeks to address these issues through agroecology, with the goal of expanding educational opportunities. As a result, Agroecological Provid\u00eancia has developed a range of activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness, health, and cultural enrichment. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Agroecological Education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Teaching children and teens about agroecological issues, growing vegetable gardens and the plant life cycle.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecological Infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Constructing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Composting_toilet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compost toilets<\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3LSwAkW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green roofs<\/a>, and evapotranspiration basins. We do not have a fixed source of funding, so we are constantly striving to keep things running.\u201d <\/span>\u2014 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lorena Portela<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Understanding that Morro da Provid\u00eancia is densely occupied although it lacks basic resources, such as water, sewage treatment, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3WveOsI\">efficient solid waste management<\/a> and leisure spaces, highlights the importance of this initiative in Brazil&#8217;s first favela.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the pandemic, Agroecological Provid\u00eancia <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2LlvnDb\">installed 83 public sinks<\/a> to address the unequal impact of coronavirus on Rio&#8217;s most vulnerable populations. While the world was advised to wash hands, Provid\u00eancia residents had limited access to water. In this context, the initiative was not just impactful; it was life-saving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agroecological Provid\u00eancia aims to expand its reach to more children, women, and youth in Morro da Provid\u00eancia.
