The inaugural edition of the Sustainable Favela Festival: Favela Solutions at the Center will be a major solutions festival, bringing together over 1,300 residents from 90 favelas across Greater Rio, as well as the general public, at an iconic downtown cultural occupation. The festival will occupy this iconic space of cultural production in the heart of downtown Rio de Janeiro with knowledge, technologies, and products generated in the favelas of Greater Rio by <strong>100 socio-environmental community-based organizations<\/strong> and allies of the Sustainable Favela Network. The public, of all ages, is invited to join in learning and exchanging ideas, breaking down historical barriers, and recognizing the power and potential of Rio&#8217;s favelas.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Introduction to the Festival<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Logo-in-FFS-release.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-79871\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Logo-in-FFS-release-620x438.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Logo-in-FFS-release-620x438.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Logo-in-FFS-release.jpeg 629w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.favelasustentavel.org\/about\">Sustainable Favela Network<\/a> has been growing since 2017, and is now made up of 700 members, including community organizers from over 300 favelas and technical allies, working together to fight for climate justice by realizing the potential of favelas as models of sustainable communities.<\/p>\n<p>These community groups and allies will host their 1st Sustainable Favela Festival this Saturday at Fundi\u00e7\u00e3o Progresso, located in Lapa, downtown Rio de Janeiro. The festival will showcase socio-environmental and cultural solutions, with activities and discussions from the Sustainable Favela Network aimed at the general public. The network fosters <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3zYgVOC\">knowledge exchanges<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4dMLlRJ\">reclaiming of memory and a sense of belonging<\/a>, the construction of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/VideoReleaseValeEN\">infrastructure<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4f6IeoQ\">environmental technologies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/47uUFHG\">research<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4eLPlTG\">political advocacy<\/a>. All these actions have always taken place within favelas, <em>by us, for us<\/em>, and have been communicated through the media. Together, we work in the fight for climate justice, aiming to realize the potential of favelas as sustainable communities through 11 key areas: Climate Justice, Socio-Environmental Education, Participatory Policymaking, Local Culture and Memory, Food Sovereignty, Collective Health, Solidarity Economy, Right to Sanitation, Energy Justice, Just Transport, and Sustainable Housing. We strive to foster and enhance the qualities that already exist in favelas to boost and amplify their potential.
