During the early hours of June 7, 2025, the community was celebrating its traditional, annual <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3upEAEw\"><em>festa junina<\/em><\/a> (June celebration), when what should have been a joyful moment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viory.video\/en\/videos\/a3441_08062025\/if-we-don-t-unite-we-ll-keep-dying-protesters-demand-justice-after-young-man-killed-during-police-ops-in-rio\">turned into pain and outrage<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dRrimP\">police violence<\/a> took the life of 24-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4ldmLhe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herus Guimar\u00e3es Mendes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4nDEnok\">traumatized dozens of children and other residents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the face of deep social inequality and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3I7xf3n\">devaluation of favela lives<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4nCPeio\">fight for justice<\/a> and equity remains <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44vQrit\">a constant in the favela<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_81179\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81179\" style=\"width: 1248px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Quadrilha-junina-performance-in-honor-of-Herus-Guimaraes-Mendes-Photo-Archive-Junina-Joao-Danado.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81179 size-full\" title=\"On June 18, the Santo Amaro quadrilha junina performed in honor of Herus, a resident who was assassinated by BOPE [Special Operations Battalion] on June 7 during the community\u2019s traditional festa junina. These were the words of Simone Rocha, current president of Santo Amaro\u2019s <em>quadrilha junina<\/em>, during the group\u2019s performance on June 18.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn light of everything that happened, we chose to go ahead with this performance\u2014also at the request of M\u00f4nica, Herus\u2019s mother. We thought about giving up, dismantling the group, cancelling our commitments. But that would not be fair to the community, to the group members. It would not be fair to a culture that fights to survive without any support from the State. When the State does show up, it shows up to do what it did. At first, the <em>quadrilha junina<\/em> did not have an official name, but after a vote, it became Jo\u00e3o Danado (\u201cWicked Johnny\u201d would be a playful translation). Since the 1980s, Jo\u00e3o Danado has been a symbol of cultural resistance, passed down through generations in Santo Amaro. Created by residents, the stylized <em>quadrilha<\/em> stands out for its elaborate costumes and themes that celebrate the arts and cultures of Brazil and the world. Photo: Junina Jo\u00e3o Danado Archive<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Between 1989 and 1994, couples and male dancers represented Jo\u00e3o Danado with rehearsed choreographies and well-defined steps. These early years laid the foundation for the group\u2019s legacy, which, starting in 1994, expanded with the creation of Jo\u00e3o Danado Mirim\u2014a version aimed at children from the community. This new branch contributed to the cultural preservation of the festivities and ensured the tradition would be passed down from generation to generation. Photo: Junina Jo\u00e3o Danado Archive<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1998, the <em>quadrilha<\/em> had the chance to fulfill its dream of performing at the traditional and well-known Arrai\u00e1 do Rio, which at the time was held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37rfbMg\">Marqu\u00eas de Sapuca\u00ed Sambadrome<\/a>. It symbolizes affection, respect, care, unity, and collective resistance within popular culture.
