Through discussion circles, the podcast shares the life journeys and everyday struggles of inspiring favela residents, showing that yes, they can achieve their dreams, live in abundance and build wealth. This article is part of our <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rp9pfS\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series of community media profiles<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Story and Inspirations Behind the Podcast<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Os Favelados Pod<\/em> was created on April 22, 2022, by Saulo Paulino, a resident of Rio\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2SxloO8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vidigal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> favela, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationaltraveller.com\/south-america\/brazil\/rio-de-janeiro-favela-vidigal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely visited by tourists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and located in the city\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/318kJ9H\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Zone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Up until then, Paulino had been working as an accountant at a company, but he realized that that life didn\u2019t reflect who he truly was, thus inspiring his career transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI chose that degree because I was looking for financial stability, but five years later, I came to the conclusion that it wasn\u2019t for me. I wanted to be an artist and express myself somehow, because I knew I had a gift for it since I was a kid.\u201d \u2014 Saulo Paulino<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspirations for the podcast come from a life path deeply rooted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hw94uV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and communication, with origins that trace back to Paulino\u2019s childhood. One of his earliest influences was a brief connection with his great-grandfather, Francisco Ribeiro, who was a radio broadcaster in the southern city of Curitiba and worked at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/45WVZ8n\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R\u00e1dio Educadora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until his death in the early 1990s.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe radio station he worked at was in the Venceslau Br\u00e1s neighborhood, in Curitiba, back when we still lived there. I was a kid. He was a broadcaster. I found out as an adult that he\u2019d also gone to college and graduated with a degree in journalism. It was a surprise, because I didn\u2019t know there was anyone in the family with a college education. We\u2019ve always lived in a favela\u2014my dad was a construction worker, and my mom only finished elementary school\u2014so finding out that someone in our past had studied communication at university was a big surprise\u2014and a motivation for me to try doing something too.\u201d \u2014 Saulo Paulino<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another key moment came when Paulino was eight and still living in the Vila Verde favela, in Curitiba&#8217;s Cidade Industrial neighborhood, where he discovered his artistic side through clowning.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI took part in a social project called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3UA2HtI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circo Cidade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And that\u2019s when I realized that this is what I love doing.\u201d \u2014 Saulo Paulino<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From that point on, Paulino got involved in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2c5B0Uw\">circus activities<\/a>, including volunteering with a project that brought clowning to hospitals\u2014where he performed for eight years. In 2015, at the age of 26, after moving to Rio, he began working in professional theater, graduated from prestigious drama school Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras (CAL), and performed in several plays. Later, he created the official Portuguese-language <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3T9F1fk\"><em>How to Beat<\/em><\/a> YouTube channel, dedicated to horror storytelling, which went on to surpass 220,000 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paulino balanced all of these experiences with formal jobs until 2022, when he decided to fully invest in his own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/1nCyg4U\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/44g4WXL\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Os Favelados Pod<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Paulino, the project\u2019s name was intentional: when spoken aloud in Portuguese, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Os Favelados Pod<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Favela Residents\u2019 Pod<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cast<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) sounds like \u201cFavela Residents Can\u201d\u2014a reference to the power and potential of favela communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGiven the cultural and artistic nature of Vidigal, I saw the potential to create a platform that could tap into those strengths and showcase the favela\u2019s talents. That way, people could share their struggles, their life journeys, and how they\u2019ve managed to achieve their goals in entrepreneurship, culture and the arts.\u201d \u2014 Saulo Paulino<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The studio is located at Avenida Presidente Jo\u00e3o Goulart 825, inside the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4o6ppaA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brota Vidigal Space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a favela-based co-working space. Paulino built and funded the space himself in 2022 and continued upgrading it until, in 2023, he applied for and won his first public call for proposals: the FOCA grant from Rio de Janeiro\u2019s Municipal Department of Culture, which funded the podcast\u2019s first season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"ISIS MARIA (BatucaVidi) - Os Favelados Pod #001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bp5Ikd41W8Q\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Achievements and Challenges: <em>Os Favelados Pod<\/em>\u00a0Can Do It All<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being relatively new, the show has already welcomed big names like actors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/45cezHA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babu Santana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40Ar0eI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan Azevedo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2023, it reached another milestone: being recognized as one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4mtrn3x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top ten favela-based businesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Rio de Janeiro, winning the entrepreneurship fair at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4181wFD\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expo Favela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"BABU SANTANA - EP#11 - A Jornada de um Gigante no Cinema\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fSXH3zvoOa8\" width=\"1030\" height=\"563\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSince then, many other wonderful things have happened to us. That\u2019s when we truly understood the project\u2019s potential and it became our fuel to keep going! We have a special kind of love for every guest who sits at our table\u2014they are in the favela, they are from the favela, and their stories inspire many, many people.\u201d \u2014 Saulo Paulino<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far, the show has garnered over 10,000 views on YouTube and more than 5,000 followers on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these achievements, there are still challenges\u2014particularly when it comes to infrastructure. The equipment used for recording is currently borrowed from a friend who lives in Rio\u2019s North Zone, which makes transportation costly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEvery week, I [have to] go all the way to the North Zone [a trip that can take up to four hours round trip] to pick up the camera every time we have a production&#8230; Then, I take it back to him so he can also earn his living and do his own production. That trip costs me over R$80 (~US$15) a week. Everything is really expensive, and that\u2019s still a challenge for us. Photo: Saulo Paulino<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Paulino, speaking about and to the favelas is key to reframing the negative image that has long surrounded these areas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we discuss the importance of journalism in the favela, I point out that the dominant media narrative today\u2014and I do believe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/BestWorstReportingFavelas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that\u2019s been changing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though there\u2019s still a long way to go\u2014is that everything wrong with society stems from the favela. And we, at Os Favelados Pod, go in the opposite direction. We believe there\u2019s power, talent and protagonism here! The foundations of society come from favela residents. The favela has a voice and a place here [on our show]. It\u2019s for these people that we open the mic. Expanding discussions about the issues that run through the favelas\u2014through the lens of favela residents\u2014is the perfect opportunity to shift [mainstream] thinking. And it\u2019s by changing how we think that we can change how we act and build a better future.
