The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/FavelaClimateMemoryInTheGuardian\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groundbreaking project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which explores the connections between climate, nature, affection and territory, recently wrapped up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/MCAcariExpo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two moving weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XW8L4i\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acari<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a favela that suffers from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wikifavelas.com.br\/index.php\/Acari\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extreme vulnerabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=77204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> climate risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Rio de Janeiro\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2IgR5qe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Zone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So we had the opening at our headquarters, the Mothers of Acari Cultural Center, which has long been a place where we reclaim memory\u2014whether through the memory of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/40ZIHVj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mothers of Acari<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of massacres that happened decades ago, or of the violence that continues today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how could we not open an exhibition called \u2018Favela Climate Memory\u2019 in our cultural space? At the same time, considering that we have a network of public schools, we reached out to the team at the Queen Nzinga of Angola high school and asked if they would like to host the exhibition. The idea was received with great enthusiasm\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, the last place [that hosted] the exhibition was the residents\u2019 association, [another] space of huge importance to our favela. Many issues of urban planning within the favela are discussed at the residents\u2019 association: sanitation, food security. They have a community kitchen. It\u2019s also where tools for maintaining sewerage and drainage systems are stored. And it\u2019s where we come together to organize actions in response to floods, like we did a few years back. He shared which parts of \u2018Favela Climate Memory\u2019 caught his attention the most.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019ve been following the exhibition since the beginning and, reading the posters, one of the things I found out was that [the favela called] Mar\u00e9 used to be [part of the] bay, and was infilled, right? Just like a large part of Acari was also infill\u2026 And I think it\u2019s very important that people know that. We\u2019re taking up space that wasn\u2019t meant to be occupied\u2014by buildings, houses, structures. I think the knowledge that the exhibition brings to the community allows people to access this kind of information. And that the exhibition is didactic enough that you don\u2019t need a lot of schooling to understand. That\u2019s one of the big dilemmas of exhibitions: [the difficulty of] truly includ[ing] peripheral areas. That there are good people in Acari. It\u2019s not just about shootouts, it\u2019s not just about bad things happening. I think the government needs to step up, in addition to construction projects, it needs to invest more in education, so that these [sad] events stop happening. What do a few millimeters of rain mean? The \u2018Favela Climate Memory\u2019 exhibition brings together 1,145 testimonials from 382 residents of ten favelas across Rio de Janeiro, collected and analyzed over three years, produced through a collective oral history project.
