During the final week of August, the favela-based<\/span> Straight Talk Institute<\/span><\/a> hosted ‘Straight Talk for Climate’ week in<\/span> Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/span><\/a>, one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest groups of favelas, in the city’s<\/span> North Zone<\/span><\/a>. The aim was to discuss issues that will be addressed at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (<\/span>COP30<\/span><\/a>) and to reflect on the role of Brazilian favelas in the post-conference context. Moderated by<\/span> Raull Santiago<\/span><\/a>, co-founder and executive director of the institute, the event brought together<\/span> David Amen<\/span><\/a>, co-founder of the<\/span> Roots in Movement Institute<\/span><\/a>; <\/span>Josefa Maria<\/span><\/a>, environmental educator and<\/span> agroecological farmer<\/span><\/a> from<\/span> Pedra do Sapo<\/span><\/a>, one of Alem\u00e3o’s favelas; Urutau Guajajara, chief of the<\/span> Marak\u00e1\u2019n\u00e1 Village Multiethnic Indigenous University<\/span><\/a>;<\/span> Jurema Werneck<\/span><\/a>, COP30 special envoy for racial equality and peripheral communities;<\/span> Marcelle Decoth\u00e9<\/span><\/a>, strategic director of the<\/span> Pipa Initiative<\/span><\/a>;<\/span> COP30 executive director <\/span>Ana Toni<\/span><\/a>, and other participants from civil society and favelas.<\/span><\/p>\n
