People of all ages and from all parts of the city are invited to learn and share ideas, breaking down historical barriers and recognizing the power and potential of Rio\u2019s favelas.<\/p>\n<h3>Favelas Set Agenda for COP30<\/h3>\n<p>Three weeks prior to the COP30 climate conference in Bel\u00e9m, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, the 2nd Sustainable Favela Festival focuses on <strong>climate solutions<\/strong>\u2014particularly <strong>community-based <\/strong>solutions\u2014and the urgent need to put <strong>informal settlements and vulnerable neighborhoods at the center of global climate decisions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the first semester of 2025, 100 members and allies of the Sustainable Favela Network drafted the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/COP30LetterPDF\"><strong>COP30 Letter from the World\u2019s Informal Settlements<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d officially titled \u2018Open Letter from Informal Urban Settlements, Traditional and Disenfranchised Communities Worldwide to Global Authorities at COP30,\u2019 with its declaration of intent: \u201c<strong>Center Informal Settlements, Traditional and Disenfranchised Communities in Global Climate Decisions<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Informal settlements \u201care home to those most vulnerable to\u2026 environmental risks in much of the world,\u201d while they are also \u201cbuilding solutions, the first to react in solidarity, as in rescues during extreme climate events,\u201d the letter introduces. \u201c<strong>Climate solutions and climate justice will only be possible with their active participation, recognition, and leadership<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/COP30-Informal-Settlements-Letter.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-81851\" src=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/COP30-Informal-Settlements-Letter-490x620.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/COP30-Informal-Settlements-Letter-490x620.png 490w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/COP30-Informal-Settlements-Letter-497x629.png 497w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/COP30-Informal-Settlements-Letter-768x972.png 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/COP30-Informal-Settlements-Letter.png 1198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The COP30 Letter from the World\u2019s Informal Settlements, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/SignedCOPLetter\">so far with<strong> 513 signatories<\/strong><\/a>\u2014among them 355 individuals and 158 organizations from <strong>19 Brazilian states<\/strong> across all regions of the country, and <strong>23 nations<\/strong> (Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, Switzerland and Venezuela)\u2014will be officially launched at a <strong>press conference at 11:30am<\/strong> during the 2nd Sustainable Favela Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>six demands<\/strong> expressed in the letter, written to reflect shared concerns of informal settlements and vulnerable communities worldwide, are: <strong>(1) <\/strong>Place the most vulnerable settlements in your countries at the heart of climate decisions.<strong> (2)<\/strong> Invest at the local level in ways that promote and value the local population, their ancestral and grassroots knowledge, and sense of belonging. <strong>(3)<\/strong> Climate funds must prioritize Nature-based Solutions and foster renewable energies in informal settlements. <strong>(4) <\/strong>Ensure that consolidated settlements and communities that wish to remain are able to do so safely and with quality services. <strong>(5) <\/strong>Guarantee, in settlements where resettlement is desired, safe and adequate housing. <strong>(6) <\/strong>Invest in rural, Indigenous, <em>quilombola<\/em> (in Brazil), fishing, and other traditional communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Sustainable Favela Network will continue to collect signatures until COP30 in Bel\u00e9m, sending the letter\u2014endorsed by hundreds\u2014to global authorities attending the conference, where network members will be present to read the letter at various spaces and events. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/SignCOP30Letter\">Click here to lend your voice in support of the COP30 Letter from the World\u2019s Informal Settlements.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Favelas Create Solutions<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The Sustainable Favela Network&#8217;s activities have always taken place within and across favelas, \u2018by us for us\u2019 sharing knowledge and developing actions together, then actively communicated to outsiders. The Sustainable Favela Festival, however, provides an opportunity for the general public to engage in person with the many solutions generated by favelas across Greater Rio, in a large festival focused on the exchange of experiences and knowledge. Since our launch in 2017, Rio de Janeiro\u2019s Sustainable Favela Network has grown monthly, carrying out collective actions within and between participating favelas. Exhibitions include: Favela Climate Memory (10 favelas), Evictions Museum (Vila Aut\u00f3dromo), Fragments of Memory (Cerro Cor\u00e1 Residents in Motion), Women Warriors (Favela Museum\/Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho\/Cantagalo), The Bay Detectives \u2013 Citizen Science in Action (Sepetiba Ecomuseum), Memories of Mar\u00e9 (Mar\u00e9 Museum), Rocinha: A Historical Journey Through Images (Sankofa Museum\/Rocinha), and Women of Stone: 25 Years of Collective Sewing (Women of Stone Collective\/Pedra de Guaratiba).<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Hands-on workshops for all ages<\/strong>, including: Urban art, PANCs (unconventional edible plants), <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3J59FVt\"><em>cordel<\/em> literature<\/a>, composting, mapping emotional landscapes, how to build a homemade biodigester, reclaiming stories and grassroots communication, bio-jewelry, the seasons and climate change, crafts, and more!<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Film club and workshop<\/strong>, featuring screenings such as \u2018Nature and Dreams,\u2019 \u2018Horto&#8217;s Roots,\u2019 \u2018Trash? We strive to foster and enhance the qualities that already exist in favelas to amplify their potential. The SFN operates from the perspective of favelas as solution factories, including for human sustainability, based on the concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catcomm.org\/abcd\">Asset-Based Community Development<\/a> (ABCD), which focuses on developing residents and territories through their existing strengths.
