Some <a href=\"https:\/\/sumauma.com\/liveblog\/ao-vivo-cop30-segunda-semana-decisiva-acordos-pressao-indigena\/\">important<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4ppGKuv\">isolated advances<\/a> in discussions on the climate crisis were reported, maintaining direction from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4pmZ0Va\">Paris Agreement<\/a>\u2014yet these are not enough to prevent the escalation of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4b5DiiO\">climate change<\/a> and, consequently, the climate emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, what may have been COP30\u2019s most significant impact was scarcely reported by national and international media: the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4qbhOIv\">largest participation<\/a> of civil society in the history of COPs and the significance of its cascading effects, clearly perceived by those across the event and its offshoots. For two intense weeks, Bel\u00e9m pulsed under the influence of a vibrant, colorful diversity of organizations from every corner, people and region of Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Movements from the peripheries of power\u2014including a plurality of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4spsXXp\">Indigenous peoples\u2014with 5,000 Indigenous participants, 400 of whom had access to the Blue Zone, the highest number in history<\/a>\u2014<em>quilombola<\/em> communities, traditional fishing communities and informal urban settlements were engaged in constant, intense dialogue. They shared stories rooted in their origins and lived experiences, organizing strategies, citizen-generated data, letters and manifestos, contacts and inspiration\u2014all crucial for sustaining and urgently advancing an agenda that will determine the quality of life of all beings on Earth, now and in the future.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe UN climate conference in Bel\u00e9m went down in history as the edition with the largest Indigenous participation ever recorded\u2026 Indigenous peoples are guardians of the territory, the environment and life\u2026 Recognizing this leadership is essential to advancing global measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation.\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/g1.globo.com\/pa\/para\/noticia\/2025\/11\/18\/ministra-sonia-guajajara-diz-que-recorde-de-presenca-indigena-na-cop-30-coloca-povos-originarios-no-centro-das-decisoes-climaticas-em-belem.ghtml\">S\u00f4nia Guajajara<\/a>, Minister of Indigenous Peoples<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Spaces Across Bel\u00e9m Were Filled With Movements and Collectives Seeking Climate Justice<\/h3>\n<p>Civil society was primarily concentrated at the <a href=\"http:\/\/cupuladospovoscop30.org\/\">People\u2019s Summit<\/a>, launched on November 12, as well as in several houses occupied by thematically aligned groups to host their own discussions and events, spread across the capital of Par\u00e1 (including the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3YhdE5f\">COP Indigenous Village<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4js8PzR\">Chico Mendes House<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4pgASVb\">City House<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3YaW4Qp\">Black Amazon House<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4rAl5lz\">Amazon Media Ninja House<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4oExVwz\">House of Socio-environmental Journalism<\/a>). Many groups also had the opportunity to hold events and actions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4pvKjjT\">Green Zone<\/a>, made available by Brazil&#8217;s federal government as part of the official COP30 space, starting on November 10, which <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Yq3waB\">received over 500,000 visits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/ComCatCOP30GreenZoneBarqueata\">View the Album<\/a>: Green Zone, People\u2019s Summit Boat Parade Launch and Indigenous Village:<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Zona Verde, Barqueata da C\u00fapula dos Povos e Aldeia Ind\u00edgena na COP30, 11 e 12 de novembro de 2025\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/catcomm\/albums\/72177720330313655\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54923821400_a2847b3e91_h.jpg\" alt=\"Zona Verde, Barqueata da C\u00fapula dos Povos e Aldeia Ind\u00edgena na COP30, 11 e 12 de novembro de 2025\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/498nnkT\">People\u2019s Summit<\/a> is an autonomous civil society movement that has taken place in parallel with the climate conferences since the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2WBGknM\">1992 Rio Earth Summit<\/a>, serving as a counterpoint to official negotiations by giving voice to traditional communities and social movements, while demanding climate justice and grassroots-driven solutions\u2014countering the primarily market-based proposals put forth by public officials at the COPs. As stated in its <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4oDk3CC\">Principles Charter, signed by 1,100 organizations<\/a>, planning for the COP30 People\u2019s Summit began in 2023 with the aim of guaranteeing a space for grassroots struggles and coordination in pursuit of sustainable and just alternatives to the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4qI66F9\">Boat Parade for Climate Justice<\/a> marked the opening of the COP30 People\u2019s Summit, bringing together over 200 vessels in Bel\u00e9m&#8217;s Guajar\u00e1 Bay. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On that same day, in the late afternoon, the opening of the People\u2019s Summit took place at the Federal University of Par\u00e1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/48gERtu\">UFPA<\/a>), where several days of thematic deliberations followed to collectively draft the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3NftWcF\">People\u2019s Summit Declaration<\/a>, which was presented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DRLCFlYgLLX\/\">to national authorities on the final day of the Summit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QBdJ8eAmT54?si=t7FB-WgjdtWTqSOQ\">Children\u2019s Letter<\/a>, produced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/48fmDIW\">Children\u2019s Summit<\/a> over the course of the People\u2019s Summit, brought together around <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4jjWrSz\">600 youth for its drafting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over its four days, representatives from <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4pgcIKp\">65 countries attended the Summit, including 25,000 credentialed participants<\/a> and around 20,000 people circulating daily on the UFPA campus, taking part in activities, performances, discussions and plenaries. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the People&#8217;s Summit, a historic solidarity kitchen was set up which, in the largest public procurement of Brazil&#8217;s Food Acquisition Program (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3N4GQKF\">PAA<\/a>) in over 20 years, served between 9,000 and 12,000 meals per day. It also took the initiative to distribute <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4jrkaQY\">thousands of meals to Bel\u00e9m\u2019s favelas<\/a> during the People\u2019s Summit\u2014around 7,000, according to the state of Par\u00e1&#8217;s Landless Workers\u2019 Movement (MST) leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The peak of the mobilizations was the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49tKbKJ\">Global Climate March<\/a>, organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3K3OovZ\">People\u2019s Summit<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4pINKDa\">Baixadas COP<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;baixadas&#8221; are the local term for favelas in Bel\u00e9m). Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Advocacy Letters from Peripheral Movements Proliferate at COP30<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4oDk3CC\">Policy Charter<\/a> that guided the People\u2019s Summit and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4qaSQZO\">Summit Declaration<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4jjWrSz\">Children\u2019s Letter<\/a> built over days of deliberation in Bel\u00e9m, numerous other movements from the peripheries of power and their allies launched their own letters with demands for climate justice. We live in an area that has long suffered from frequent flooding. Photo: B\u00e1rbara Dias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the same event, held in the space provided by the S\u00e3o Paulo Council of Architecture and Urbanism in the Green Zone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/yHgRb-VqOM8?si=DaIQ0t0TLtB_wkF9&amp;t=28339\">TETO Brasil presented<\/a> its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/conteudo.teto.org.br\/panoramaclimatico-pt\">Climate Overview of Favelas and Invisibilized Communities<\/a>,\u201d and Catalytic Communities shared a brief history of the qualitative study \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.favelasustentavel.org\/climate-memory\">Favela Climate Memory<\/a>,\u201d conducted by the Sustainable Favela Network*.<\/p>\n<h3>Hundreds of Thousands Return, Empowered, to Their Communities<\/h3>\n<p>On November 20, Brazilian Black Awareness Day, after the conclusion of the People\u2019s Summit and as the official COP30 was coming to an end\u2014with media attention diverted almost exclusively to what turned out to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4psxhCH\">small fire reportedly caused by an illegal microwave oven<\/a>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DRS67tGDXL_\/\">peripheral movements continued<\/a> the fight. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DR24borDPbv\/\">On that day<\/a>, organizing took the form of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ComCatCOP30MarchaPeriferia\">March of the Periphery<\/a>, which brought together 400 people in the streets of Bel\u00e9m\u2019s largest <em>baixada<\/em>, Terra Firme.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82554\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82554\" style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/March-of-the-Periphery-COP30.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82554 size-full\" title=\"On November 20, Brazilian Black Awareness Day, the March of the Periphery took place in Bel\u00e9m\u2019s largest baixada, Terra Firme. They were renewed with the conviction that solutions will come through a reconnection with nature and with one another\u2014which is nothing more than a return to ancestral and popular
