With the aim of ensuring that the perspectives and needs of favelas become an integral part of the public debate on the Right to the City, RioOnWatch‘s Democracy series underscores the urgency of participatory public policies emerging from the strength of favela territories. By bolstering the ecosystem of popular and community communication in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region, the series seeks to contribute to the consolidation and recognition of grassroots communication as a fundamental principle for democracy in Rio de Janeiro.

The Democracy series is part of the project “Realizing the Right to the Favela Through Grassroots Media.” In our view, democracy is one of four critical elements in realizing the right to the favela. The others are: climate justice, human rights, and housing rights.
